In his discussion of the dot-com boom and bust cycle, he lays out the challenges faced by critical Internet culture today. In a series of case studies, Loovink meticulously describes the ambivalent attitude that artists and activists take as they veer back and forth between euphoria and skepticism. As part of this process, Lovink examines the internal dynamics of virtual communities through an analysis of the use of moderation and "collaborative filtering" on mailing lists and weblogs. He also confronts the practical and theoretical problems that appear as artists join the growing number of new media educational programs. Delving into the unexplored gold mines of list archives and blogs, Lovink reveals a world that is largely unknown to both the general public and the Internet visionaries. IMPORTANT DATES ================ Submission: January 13th, 2012 - 2-4 page position paper. Notification: February 10th, 2012. Workshop: May 6th, 2012. More information can be found on the workshop website at http://di.ncl.ac.uk/foodixd/ The intersection between food and interaction design presents an interesting challenge to the HCI community in attending to the pervasive nature of food, the socio-cultural differences in food practices and a changing global foodscape. We propose a one-day workshop that aims to bring together researchers involved in studying in areas of food and human-computer interaction. The workshop will be organized with a poster session to foster discussion, followed by a working session that will include a visit to and collaboration with a local food co-op to capture local food related practices. At the end of the workshop we aim to discuss the role of food in HCI, to better understand daily food practices within existing environments and develop design proposals aiming to support production and consumption of food towards health, food experiences, ecological sustainability and alternative food cultures. We are also exploring options for a special issue of a journal to focus on the current state of research in this area. We are looking for contributions in the field of food, HCI and interaction design in the following areas: * Perspectives from multiple disciplines * Food and ecological sustainability, alternative food cultures, food experiences, healthy diets and wellbeing * Studies on daily practices, values and social norms * Behavior change (models) and community actions * Measurability of food consumption and waste * Design frameworks for human-food interaction Submissions from other areas will be considered depending on their relevance and unique contribution to the workshop and the field. Participants will be required to submit a 2-4 page position paper which addresses the issue of food and interaction design. In particular, papers addressing the everyday aspects of food and interaction design in themes of health and wellbeing, food experiences, ecological sustainability and alternative food cultures will be especially welcome. At least one author of each accepted submission must register for the workshop and for at least one day of the conference. Submissions are welcomed from researchers and practitioners working with Food in HCI and Interaction Design. Prof. Richard Taylor Institute for Information Policy The Pennsylvania State University Call for Paper Proposals The End of the Phone System A by-invitation Experts' Workshop to be held at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, PA, May 16-18, 2012 The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and the collection of technologies known as Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) are the foundations of communications policy throughout the world. As traffic and industry activity migrate to Internet protocol-based communication, wireless networks, video, and other systems, however, the obsolescence of these infrastructures is in sight. The transition from the phone system to converged IP-based networks raises major regulatory, technical and economic questions. Legacy rules do not address the role of regulation in the coming all-IP marketplace. The Internet was never designed to serve the many roles that the traditional phone network plays and there is no plan in place for a managed transition as with digital television and number portability. The time has come to tackle these questions. The Institute for Information Policy at Penn State University, The Mack Center for Technological Innovation at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and the Donald McGannon Communication Research Center at Fordham University are pleased to announce this call for paper proposals in which "The End of the Phone System" serves as the main theme. Authors of selected papers will be invited to present them during a two day (May 17th and 18th) by-invitation workshop designed to bring together up to a dozen American and international experts and to be held at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. The workshop will open with a reception on May 16th. This Workshop is one of a series of events on "Making Policy Research Accessible," organized by the IIP, with the support of the Ford Foundation. Dear colleagues, the Department of Information at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany) is hoping to promote the internationalisation of its study programmes. We are therefore looking for a guest lecturer from abroad in the field of Information Science. The interested person must have a PhD, s/he must be member of a university abroad and have teaching experiences at university level. We plan for the prospective colleague to stay for at least 1 year and desirably up to 2 years. S/he is expected to teach 2-3 modules in our International Programme “Digital Information Services” which is taught in English. Each module involves a class contact of 4 hours, i.e. the teaching load will be about 10 hours a week. Terms at our university roughly last from the middle of March until the middle of July and again from the end of September until the beginning of February. We would be happy to find a colleague who takes an interest in our research focus “Knowledge Access und Accessibility” and who is committed to the internationalisation of study programmes and student life. The salary of the guest lecturer would amount to about 53.000 € /year or more – depending on his or her status at the home university - plus required social security contribution. Happy New Year! ************************************** Introduction The 21st century has presented the professional researcher with a myriad of challenges and opportunities. In particular, there are a number of new and exciting digital technologies, which offer researchers considerable advantages in terms of speed, access connectivity and economy. Skype and other Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) applications allow practitioners to carry out face-to-face interviews with research subjects thousands of miles away and in different time zones. Short attitudinal surveys can be sent via text message. Online surveys are now no longer confined to public opinion research, but can be adapted for a myriad of research objectives. Researchers all over the world are using these new, innovative methods to design and develop research programmes, but until now, no tome has brought together their work in a single publication. This edited volume will form a comprehensive introduction to new media technologies and their applicability to the world of business and social research. The book will comprise both discussions of new technologies, as well as real-life examples of their use in various disciplines, from psychology to political science. Together, this approach aims to reduce scholar's anxiety about adapting these new technologies for use in their own work. Objective of the Book There are already in existence a number of manuals and textbooks that critique and provide guidance on traditional research methodologies such as pen-and-paper surveys and telephone interviews. There is also a growing body of journal articles and unpublished papers outlining the use of new technologies in research activities. But, there is no single, edited volume that examines the applicability and usefulness of new technologies to academic research, including experiments, surveys, field studies, secondary research, content analysis, ethnography and focus groups. These technologies offer a wealth of opportunities to the research practitioner, but without prior knowledge of how these technologies can, should, and should not be used, researchers may experience a degree of anxiety when considering their use. The overall mission of this valuable publication is therefore to aid researchers in recognizing the advantages of speed, economy, interactivity, and connectivity that these technologies offer, to alert them to the pitfalls of these methods, and to provide a foundation on which they can build reliable, sound and scientific research projects. Target Audience This volume is aimed at research practitioners at all academic levels, from Masters students to Professors. These readers will be able to use the case studies as a practical guide to designing and conducting their own research projects. This volume is not limited to scholars in any particular discipline. Social scientists of all backgrounds will find use from this book. Additionally, most pre-doctoral courses include electives or compulsory subjects in research methodology, so the market for this volume is potentially very large. A mix of contributors from the UK, US, Europe and other countries will be deliberately selected to increase the appeal of the book to a world market. Submissions Excellent case studies detailing the use of new technologies in empirical research are sought for this volume. Additionally, chapters dealing with theoretical issues in planning, designing and developing research studies using new technologies are also welcome. The book aims to provide relevant theoretical frameworks, empirical research findings, and practitioners' best practices in the use of new technologies. Moreover, the notion of migration has undergone significant shifts, coming to signify imaginaries on the move which are not necessarily linked to geographical displacement. The aim of this conference is to address the relationship between migration and digital technologies across national contexts and ethnic belonging. Migrancy embeds many of the local and global paradoxes that also pertain to digital media with their compression of space and time. However, the link between the two fields is still under-theorized and in need of more situated and comparative analysis. Drawing from approaches from the humanities and social sciences (media theory, communication studies, learning sciences, gender studies, cultural studies, postcolonial theory, migration and transnational studies, among others), the primary aim of this conference is to explore how the study of digitalization and migration challenges existing notions of diaspora, identity, nation, family, learning, literacy, social networks, youth, body, gender and ethnicity, asking for new approaches and a rethinking of traditional social and cultural categories. The conference will consider the following questions, among others: How has the development of new digital technologies changed the experience of migration? Conversely, how has the reality of migration impacted on the use, development and distribution of new media technologies? How does the use of media differ among different migrant generations? How does media literacy impact on issues of integration and socialization in a hosting country? What are the differences in media access, diffusion and use among different migrant communities across the world? How are race, gender, age, class, ethnicity and other markers of identity recodified online? How are transnational relationships and resources arrayed in networks? How do ideas and practices move across these networks? How is the notion of home or community, which is no longer locatable with a "here" and "there" reconceptualised through digital diasporas? How do these developments impact on the spaces for learning and education, which are no longer limited to place-based classrooms and curricula? How can learning processes and networks be conceptualised when these networks expand larger geographical distances, and multiple communities are crossed? What resources of identity do migrants draw on and how are these resources hybridized in practice, and related to their learning and socialization processes? In short, how are digital crossroads created, distributed and experienced in the context of migration, diaspora and transnationalism? The conference will explore three inter-related strands of the relationships between media and migration: Identity and diaspora (Strand 1) - identity and performativity - gender, race, ethnicity, religion and online communities - digital borders, digital diasporas - imagined communities, transnationalism and mobility - digital divides (generational, access, skills, user-generated content) - cultural industry, participatory culture and social media Migrant networks (Strand 2) - mediated spatialities - relations between online and offline worlds - affinity networks and intimacy - media literacy and migration - comparative perspectives on digital media practices Learning in a globalized world (Strand 3) - informal learning in the digital space - network approaches to learning - immigrant learning - globalization and learning - learning & identity - socialization in transnational families Please send 300-word abstracts for papers or 500-word panel proposals for 3 to 4 presentations by 10 January 2012.
