GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences offers a new research methods training opportunity: The 1st GESIS Summer School in Survey Methodology. This event is designed for doctoral students and junior researchers who wish to conduct their own survey or to improve their understanding of the generation and quality of existing survey data. It will take place from August 9 to 25, 2012 at the University of Cologne, Germany. The programme includes refresher courses, main courses around 10 themes, a stimulating evening as well as a social programme. These matters are, of course of central significance to Community Informatics since much of CI is, in one form or another, linked into this type of relationship. These papers, however interesting and valuable they are in giving us insight and direction into how these relationships can be undertaken in ways which are respectful, productive and mutually advantageous; perhaps raise as many questions as they resolve. And here I point to these questions not to be critical of the individual papers or the issue overall, but rather to indicate how complex and challenging this area can be for those concerned and how this complexity has broader significance for the overall nature of CI both in the academic world and as a practice in the field. The first question to ask is how have university community relations evolved in the context of the broad evolution of universities and particularly the current widely observed trend toward corporatization of universities, university research and even university teaching. The rise of "user pays" approaches to universities as in other spheres (in most of the OECD countries among others) has meant that the financing of universities increasingly relies on tuition, overhead from research funds, corporate (and other, including alumni) donations, and endowments where available, for funding. Nancy Baym, Kate Crawford, Mary L. Gray to Join Microsoft Research

Many of you have asked me whether or not Microsoft Research was truly intending to invest in social media / internet studies. With this in mind, I have fantastically awesome news to share: Nancy Baym, Kate Crawford, and Mary L. Gray are all joining Microsoft Research. MSR will continue to invest in postdocs, PhD internships, and visitors with the hope of supporting social scientists who are asking critical socio-technical questions about the rise of new technologies. I have known about and admired MSR since my undergraduate days when I was studying computer science. From the perspective of a researcher, it seemed like heaven-on-earth. As I slowly shifted disciplines, I was saddened to think that I had moved myself away from MSR so I was utterly delighted when, in 2008, I learned that Jennifer Chayes wanted to start a lab that brought computer scientists and social scientists together in new ways. I was even more ecstatic when she invited me to help with this endeavor. Over the last three years, I've invited numerous scholars to come to MSR as visitors, postdocs, and interns. In particular, I've focused on bringing in social scientists from fields that haven't commonly been in conversation with industrial researchers. This loose network of folks have come to be known as the "Social Media Collective." Much to my absolute pleasure, Nancy, Kate, and Mary are going to come to MSR to join the Collective. The Social Media Collective focuses on research related to socio-technical issues, primarily from a social scientific perspective. Most of us use qualitative research methods, but there are also quantitative, computational, and experimental folks among us. We primarily look at topics related to the rise of social media, but we do so from a variety of different disciplinary lenses. Our work tends to have implications for a wide array of audiences: scholarly, technical, policy, business, and public. Nancy, Kate, and Mary are three of the leading scholars in this arena and I'm ecstatic that they'll be coming to MSR to advance this line of inquiry. - Nancy Baym is a communication scholar, currently at University of Kansas. She helped define the field of internet studies with her work on personal connections, fandom, and online communities. - Kate Crawford is a media studies scholar, currently at the University of New South Wales. She weaves together a diverse set of interests to examine mobile media, intimacy, and listening, with an eye towards public policy implications. - Mary L. Gray is an anthropologist, currently at Indiana University. Her work on rural queer youth has helped complicate our understandings of marginalized populations' use of technology. Each of these phenomenal scholars has a long history of helping us understand the relationship between technology and society and I'm sooo soooo soooo excited that they're coming to MSR. As all of you who know me know, I love MSR. I also love Nancy, Kate, and Mary. So the combination makes me feel like a kid in a candy store. MSR is a truly special place: an interdisciplinary home base for folks who are interested in studying issues related to technology. I still remember the day that Nancy, Kate, and Mary came back from talking to a group of computer scientists and mathematicians about the very meaning of "communication." Needless to say, social scientists don't use that term in the same way as mathematicians. But instead of being horrified, these three were glowing because they ended up diving deep into the kind of intense conversations that only scholars relish. That's when I knew that MSR was the place for them. Microsoft Research is so lucky that Nancy, Kate, and Mary are coming to MSR. We are looking to engage a diverse group of students who are interested in studying -- and changing the world through -- the Internet and new communications technologies; who are driven, funny, and kind; and who would like to join our amazing community in Cambridge this summer for 10 weeks of shared research and exchange. Summer interns jump head first into the swirl of the Berkman universe, where they are deeply and substantively involved in the operation of our research projects and efforts. Becoming invaluable contributors to the Center's operation and success, interns conduct collaborative and independent research under the guidance of Berkman staff, fellows, and faculty. Specific roles, tasks, and experiences vary depending on Center needs and interns' skills; a select list of expected opportunities for Summer 2012 is below. Traditionally, the workload of each intern is primarily based under one project or suite of projects, with encouragement and flexibility to get involved in additional projects all across the Center. In addition to joining research teams, summer interns participate in special lectures with Berkman Center faculty and fellows, engage each other through community experiences like weekly interns discussion hours, and attend Center-wide events and gatherings with members of the wider Berkman community. As well, each year interns establish new channels for fun and learning, such as organizing topical debates, establishing reading groups and book clubs, producing podcasts and videos, and hosting potlucks, cook-offs, and BBQs (fortunately for us, people share). Building upon this foundation and under the guidance of Executive Director Urs Gasser, we will be developing specific research and analysis that leverages our international collaboration and existing resources, and ideally creates briefing materials that are useful to policymakers, industry participants, civil society members, and other actors. Interns will work directly with the team to develop associated research. /Cyberlaw Clinic /Interns with the Cyberlaw Clinic contribute to a wide range of real-world litigation, client counseling, licensing, advocacy and legislative projects covering a broad spectrum of legal issues involving the Internet, new technology, intellectual property law, youth online safety and child protection. The Clinic provides high-quality, pro-bono legal services to appropriate individuals, small start-ups, non-profit groups and government entities regarding cutting-edge issues of the Internet, new technology and intellectual property. Interns in the Cyberlaw Clinic can expect direct hands-on experience working with clients under the supervision of the Clinic's staff attorneys. This summer, we will be seeking to update this wiki by adding key resources that have been released since 2010. We also have a series of potential next steps, including, for example, an survey course and an analysis of the 'rhetoric' of cybsecurity, that we also plan to pick up and develop with summer interns. /Digital Libraries / Summer interns working on digital library issues will conduct research related to library users, content, governance, funding, publishing models, and related issues; stay abreast of developments in the digital library field (including news related to e-publishing, copyright, linked open data, and other areas); blog regularly on these issues; and contribute to the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) wiki <http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/dpla/Main_Page> and website <http://dp.la/>. Depending on summer needs, they may also have the opportunity to create multimedia for the DPLA website. Summer interns will also conduct research on the legal aspects and considerations related to these issues. Interns may also be asked to assist with the operation and expansion of the Online Media Legal Network <http://www.omln.org/>, an attorney referral service for digital publishers, and with other projects that the DMLP undertakes in conjunction with its partner organizations around the world. More information on summer internships with the DMLP can be found on the DMLP website at: http://www.citmedialaw.org/about/summer-internships. /Freedom of Expression / Summer interns for this suite of projects, which includes Herdict, Internet & Democracy, OpenNet Initiative, Global Network Initiative, and others, will blog regularly about issues concerning online freedom of expression; contribute to related data gathering efforts using online sources; conduct research on internet filtering, monitoring, and control efforts around the globe; update project Twitter and Facebook accounts; and assist international partners. In the past, freedom of expression interns have also contributed to literature reviews, hand coded online content, and supported research on foreign language blogospheres, Twitter and online communities in Russia, China, Iran and the Middle East. Following the successful pilot of Prof. Jonathan's Zittrain's Torts Class Casebook in the Fall of 2011, this summer we will create several additional casebooks with other Harvard Law School professors. Interoperability In June 2012, Urs Gasser and John Palfrey will release their book on /Interoperability: The Promise and Perils of Highly Interconnected Systems/. The book is inspired by their 2005 study and paper---"Breaking Down Digital Barriers: When and How Information and ICT Interoperability Drives Innovation" <http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/publications/2007/Breaking_Down_Digital_Barrie…> ---which examined the relationship between interoperability and innovation in the ICT environment. By researching young people's interactions with digital media such as the Internet, cell phones, and video games, we seek to address the issues their practices raise, learn how to harness the opportunities their digital fluency presents, and shape our regulatory and educational frameworks in a way that advances the public interest. A summer intern will work for one of the Lab's three main tracks: exploratory research, curriculum development, and tool development. The research track includes literature reviews, surveys, focus groups, and one-on-one interviews to better map youth's usage of technology. Building upon these findings, the curriculum track aims to develop and test educational modules in collaboration with youth, designed for both formal and informal learning settings. The modules address youth's awareness and understanding of their technology usage and bear important policy implications. Third, the Lab's team seeks to develop a set of media literacy tools ("navigation aids for cyberspace") including an application to assess news quality, a set of badges, etc. Spending a summer with the Lab means joining a diverse and creative team. There is the focus on socialness of social software or social web applications. Widespread examples of social software are blogs, wikis, social bookmarking services, instant messaging services, and social networking sites. Social computing often uses various types of crowdsourcing techniques for aggregation of input from numerous users (public at large). Tools such as prediction markets, social tagging, reputation and trust systems as well as recommender systems are based on collaborative filtering and thus a result of crowdsourcing. Another focus of social computing is on computational modeling of social behavior, among others through Multi-agent systems (MAS) and Social Networks (SN). MAS have an anchoring going beyond social sciences even when a sociological terminology is often used. There are several usages of MAS: to design distributed and/or hybrid systems; to develop philosophical theory; to understand concrete social facts, or to answer concrete social issues via modelling and simulation. MAS aim at modelling, among other things, cognitive or reactive agents who interact in dynamic environments where they possibly depend on each other to achieve their goals. The emphasis is nowadays on constructing complex computational systems composed by agents which are regulated by various types of norms, and behave like human social systems. Finally, Social networks (SN) are social structures made of nodes (which are, generally, individuals or organizations) that are tied by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as values, visions, idea, financial exchange, friends, kinship, dislike, conflict, trade, web links, disease transmission, among many others. Social networks analysis plays a critical role in determining the way specific problems are solved, organizations are run, and the degree to which individuals succeed in achieving their goals. Social networks analysis has addressed also the dynamics issue, called dynamic networks analysis. This is an emergent scientific field that brings together traditional social network analysis, link analysis and multi-agent systems. The symposium addresses, but is not limited to, the following topics: - Conceptual issues such as Socialness (notions of the social used and/or enforced in social computing and research on social cognition or social intelligence) and Computational Models and mechanisms of social computing (information processing) as well as models and social mechanisms of cognition and intelligence. - Agency & Action in social computing systems: How can agency be understood and/or modeled in systems consisting of human and non-human agents? - Social Coordination & Norms: Emergence of norms (e.g. in Wikipedia) and compliance including their computational modeling in socio-technical systems. - Interaction & Communication in socio-technical systems and their computational models - Knowledge: the epistemological and ethical consequences of distributed knowledge creation in social computing and its computational models - Relations between the individual and the social: Forming of individual existence in relation to social computing (e.g. digital identity), including its computational modeling. - Agreement technologies. - Electronic Institutions. - Empirical and/or theoretical studies on a specific social or legal relationship (power, solidarity, legitimity, dependency...). - Empirical and/or theoretical studies on social relations' regulations. - Formalization of Normed Systems. - Logical frameworks for representing, describing and analysing agent's social or legal relationships. - Relations between the individual and the social: Forming of individual existence in relation to social computing (e.g. digital identity), including its info-computational modeling. - Responsibility, Accountability & Liability. What is epistemically and ethically responsible behavior with respect to social software and how can it be supported? Seems like this is especially pertinent now after the Eysenbach paper showing highly-tweeted papers predict highly-cited ones (http://www.jmir.org/2011/4/e123/) altmetrics: Tracking scholarly impact on the social Web A PLoS One collection Call for papers --------------- The huge increase in scientific output is presenting scholars with a deluge of data. There is growing concern that scholarly output may be swamping traditional mechanisms for both pre-publication filtering (e.g. peer review) and post-publication impact filtering (e.g. the Journal Impact Factor). Increasing scholarly use of Web 2.0 tools like CiteULike, Mendeley, Twitter, and blogs presents an opportunity to create new filters. Metrics based on a diverse set of social sources could yield broader, richer, and timelier assessments of current and potential scholarly impact. Realizing this, many authors have begun to call for investigation of these metrics under the banner of “altmetrics.” Specifically, altmetrics is the creation and study of new metrics based on the Social Web for analyzing and informing scholarship. Despite the growing speculation and early exploratory investigation into the value of altmetrics, there remains little concrete, objective research into the properties of these metrics: their validity, their potential value and flaws, and their relationship to established measures. Nor has there been any large umbrella to bring these multiple approaches together. Following on from a first successful workshop on altmetrics, this collection aims to provide a forum for the dissemination of innovative research on these metrics. We seek high quality submissions that advance the understanding of the efficacy of altmetrics, addressing research areas including: * Validated new metrics based on social media. * Tracking science communication on the Web. * Relation between traditional metrics and altmetrics including validation and correlation. * The relationship between peer review and altmetrics. * Evaluated tools for gathering, analyzing, or disseminating altmetrics. Papers will be reviewed on a rolling basis in-line with PLoS ONE standard practices.
