The Project Manager for Digital Humanities Research and Engagement will be responsible for helping to coordinate the HASTAC Digital Media and Learning (DML) Competition as well as assisting in the development of programs and funding for a UC-wide digital humanities initiative. The Digital Humanities Project Manager will work closely with the UCHRI Director and Associate Director and staff to conceptualize and implement a UC-wide initiative on digital humanities, pedagogy and engagement. Candidates will draw on previous training and experience in digital humanities and new media to work and think strategically with UCHRI and the DML Competition and Research Hub staff, to develop UC and external networks and funding opportunities, and to build and manage existing and future digital programs and projects to further the mission of UCHRI. Candidates should have demonstrated experience developing and administering programs, events, and collaborative research projects, preferably in a higher education setting; solid grounding in the principles and practices of research and development in digital humanities; experience with new media and technology applications for research and pedagogy in higher education; strong oral and written communications skills; and experience working with diverse campus and public constituencies. Some experience managing grants desirable though not required. Candidate needs to be passionate about the humanities and able to think strategically about the intersection of the humanities, technology and public engagement in order to advance the mission of UCHRI. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION ONE: EVENT AND GRANT MANAGEMENT 50% Work with UCHRI Director and external partners to manage all aspects of the MacArthur Foundation-funded Digital Media and Learning Competition, including developing timelines, work plans, budgets, and internal and external communications to ensure project goals and outcomes are met, and helping to conceive of future themes for the initiative; Serve as planning and administrative liaison for UCHRI to the MacArthur Foundation, HASTAC, and other DML Competition partners; Serve as primary communications and administrative interface between Competition applicants, participants, winners, judges, and staff; Coordinate logistics and provide administrative support for Competition related programming, including arranging space and catering, processing of honoraria and travel-related expenses; arranging transportation, accommodations, and meals for event or program participants, as necessary; Manage all aspects of post-Competition grant awards, in coordination with HASTAC and SPA; Work with UCHRI Director on fundraising and donor relations for the Competition. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION TWO: PROJECT AND RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT 50% Work with UCHRI Director and Associate Director to conceive and implement UC systemwide Digital Humanities and Public Scholarship initiative. Format We plan to curate some open submission panels as well as an invited panel and a keynote session on social media and collaborative organizations. The symposium will consist of invited talks from prominent researchers in the field, oral paper presentations of selected papers, and a poster session. Hello Frances, I am currently working on a dissertation project on the technical and social history of Fidonet. Jason Scott's 8 episode BBS documentary has been an invaluable resource: http://www.bbsdocumentary.com/ Scott's narrative focuses primarily on events in the U.S. and Europe but provides a useful starting point for scholarship in the area. (in french, soon to be translated), players act as stakeholder of a personal data market (developed by constant vzw of brussels) http://yoogle.be/ finally, over the last two years, we developed a workshop to discuss anonymity as a strategy on the internet e.g., also as a "privacy tool"). as part of the workshop, we have a role-play game in which the course participants act out anonymous communications protocols. the game inevitably gets people into hacking the system to conceal their communications. at one session last year at the piet zwart design school, the "observers" started denial of service attacks on the proxy by constantly calling out the person's name loudly. i guess it helped that they had a whole session on "protocols" (in their general sense, e.g., greetings, job interviews, dinners, as well well tcp/ip, http) the week before. the workshop invites participants to think of privacy and anonymity abstractly, but also technically; as well as the interaction of the two with politics of technology. from past experience, i find that privacy remains a very difficult concept to "teach", unless you take a very specific (and limited) definition. i find it especially challenging to think through matters which we don't know about ourselves, e.g., how tracking and profiling work and reconfigure our lives. and, maybe most importantly, how do you raise awareness without making the participants feel paranoid or helpless? how do you teach kids without becoming moralistic? i guess playfulness and even awkwardness are interesting ways of exploring our new privacy and this in itself is an interesting line of research. please do keep us posted on the other responses you get, as it is one of the strands of research in our current project on privacy in online social networks. best, s. > From: geruzko(a)gmail.com > To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org > Subject: [Air-L] Teaching privacy Dear AoIRists Sorry for cross postings. Many thanks Larissa *Two 3-year PhD Scholarships available at RMIT University:* * * *A. 3-year PhD Scholarship: Mobile game development for young people’s emotional wellbeing (Games of Being Social)* School of Media and Communication, RMIT University Australia This three-year scholarship is for a PhD candidate who will contribute to the fieldwork for a participatory design/ethnographic study of mobile gaming and design with young people. The candidate will also conduct literature reviews around mobile media, gaming and young people for the Young And Well Cooperative Research Centre (YAWCRC). S/he will spend at least 12 months over the three years of candidature documenting, archiving and analysing mobile gaming practices contributing to a study of mobile game development for young people’s emotional wellbeing. Comparative literature on bulletin board systems (BBS)

Hi everyone, I'm currently working with Gerard Goggin at the University of Sydney on a study of Bulletin Board Systems and their place in the cultural history of the Australian internet. The study will include oral histories by former (and current) participants in BBS. However we're hoping to include some comparative data and analysis on BBS use in other countries, particularly in Asia. This would include analyses of how BBS are understood in broader culture and media, as well as ethnographic studies and oral histories of BBS use. We're particularly interested in research on BBS from China, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea, but other studies would also be very welcome and useful! If anyone has any suggestions of literature on BBS, please let me know. Older research (from the 1980s on) would also be very useful. Thanks in advance,
