An Education in Facebook? Higher Education and the World’s Largest Social Network Editors: Dr Mike Kent, Dr Tama Leaver and Dr Clare Lloyd, Internet Studies, Curtin University Abstract Submission Deadline 18 January 2013 Full Chapters Due 31 May 2013 We are soliciting chapter proposals for an edited collection entitled *An Education in Facebook?* This edited collection will focus on the relationship between Facebook and Higher Education. Facebook first emerged in 2004 as a social network for students studying at universities in the United States. It soon grew beyond North America, and beyond the confines of student networking. Having evolved initially as a student social space the platform continues to play a prominent role in the lives of many students and staff at higher education institutions. The collection will explore the use of Facebook the higher education environment as both a social space, and also its growing use as part of teaching and learning processes, both formally and informally. From students creating informal social groups around a course of study or particular unit, and dedicated online study groups, to the use of Facebook as a formal venue for teaching, we are seeking chapters that explore these and related areas. Is there an appropriate place for Facebook in formal higher education? What are the tensions between private and professional spaces online for students and teachers and what are the potential dangers of unintentional overlap? What are appropriate roles and responsibilities for staff, students and institutions in relation to the social network? What are the dangers of moving important aspects of the higher education learning environment to an external company that exploits social interaction for profit? How is the shift to online learning in many institutions complemented or challenged by mobile uses of social networks, including app use on smartphones and tablets? This book will explore these and other topics interrogating the contemporary role of Facebook in Higher Education. Dr Mike Kent’s research focus is on people with disabilities and their use of, and access to, information technology and the Internet. Dr Tama Leaver researches online identities, digital media distribution and networked learning. He previously spent several years as a lecturer in Higher Education Development, and is currently also a Research Fellow in Curtin’s Centre for Culture and Technology. His recent book is *Artificial Culture: Identity, Technology and Bodies* (Routledge, 2012), and he is currently co-authoring a monograph entitled *Web Presence: Staying Noticed in a Networked World*. Workshop Topics Mobile communications are by no means new when we think in terms of walkie-talkies or car telephones but the hand held digital voice and data mobile communications that now populate our always on connected lives have only become omnipresent in the last five years. Ten years ago, when the first ICA Mobile Communications Pre-Conference Workshop was held, Twitter was unheard of, wifi virtually non-existent and mobile phone subscriptions a fifth of their present day numbers. Nowadays mobile ICTs are no longer merely mobile phones nor do they just involve communication between people. Instead mobile devices like smartphones, tablets or laptops use many convergent technologies (3G, 4G, Wifi, Television etc). How can this experience of, and exponential global growth in, mobile ICTs inform our ideas about the future? We anticipate many diverse topics which will be linked through the common thread of looking forwards in mobile communications perhaps also providing material that may help set a future research agenda. We welcome abstracts that relate to the following broad areas of mobile ICT research -Cultural differences -Gender -Children -Elderly -Mobile media -Migration -Social Media This range is in part designed to produce a broad overview, but other more specific areas will be considered. For example, contemporary studies are already identifying challenges in achieving consistency, reliability and quality of results in a fast moving world of Big Data, petabytes and change. New research has already highlighted the effects of people on the move around the globe – migration within and between nations; as well as emotions, affect and sentiment with regard to using mobile devices. Best Paper Award An Award for the best paper will be given at this event; only full papers submitted by the entry date can be included for consideration for this award. Programme Outline Commencing 9am Sunday morning 16 June 2013 and concluding at 1pm 17th June, this one and a half day event will consist of expert panel presentations and reflections, and strands for the presentation of papers. There is an upper limit of 46 papers, and a limit of 70 delegates. Poster sessions may be an option if there is high demand. I've served on a couple of University IRBs and recently had a chapter published on getting online research approved by IRBs - so here's my take (and from a strictly US perspective) Getting permission from the site owners is helpful but not determinative. The two key issues that I'd say would be the emphasis of IRB concerns are: 1) Is the site and content public? 2) How are individual responses recorded? For 1)- it's a little tricky since one could argue that anything on the internet is inherently public, but the federal IRB guidelines define "Public" in an online sense in terms of whether the people providing the responses have any expectation of privacy for their responses and the site. If there's some expectation of privacy, the IRB's likely to ask you to get consent from participants before collecting responses. Otherwise the responses are public and fair game. For 2) - to qualify as "exempt" research the key is that the data/responses must be recorded anonymously- Basically that means that you don't record any personally identifying information (like usernames). If the raw data comes with identifiers there are two options- first, strip the identifying information from the raw data and create a research data set with no identifiers - then destroy the raw dataset (so you can't go back and peek); if you want to somehow link an individual's responses, you can also replace the personal identifier (username) with a generic identifier (Subject1) to create a new research dataset before destroying the raw data. It's also helpful (but not necessary) to have someone other than the researchers do the anonymising. The key to qualifying as exempt is that the data you actually use for the research is recorded anonymously - and that you don't keep raw data with personally identifying information long (or better, as Pis you don't even see the raw data (the anonymising is done by someone else)). One of my Master's students did his thesis on Fidonet back in 1991 (you might find a copy through the Texas Tech University library). IRB Exemption and Terms of Service - Reddit.com

Hello AoIR, My name is Charles Tong and I currently working on my undergraduate thesis in Sociology. Specifically, I am trying to construct a social network based on reddit.com by data-mining posts and comments from day to day. I am specifically looking to identify how consistent influence and power is created on the website. I hope to do this by constructing multiple networks from day to day of specific sub-forums and differentiating between those who are one-time stars and consistent stars. Then I will perform a content analysis of certain influential posts to determine what makes someone consistently powerful or not and in what ways they are influential. Unfortunately, I am unsure of how this will pass under IRB exemption. I am hoping that anyone on the AoIR mailing list may have some insight that may help. I have attempted to e-mail and get in contact with the website numerous times, but each time, they have not responded. I understand that I will have to send reddit.com’s user agreement. The user agreement states the following: “You may not in any way make commercial or other unauthorized use, by publication, re-transmission, distribution, performance, caching, or otherwise, of material obtained through the Website, including without limitation the Assets or Website Content, except as permitted by the Copyright Act or other law or as expressly permitted in writing by this Agreement, Service Provider or the Website.” I was wondering if anyone knows how to approach this specific issue. I understand that Fair Use might permit this research under the Copyright Act, but I am not sure of its nature. Thank you very much in advance for your help.
