Dear all: I'd like to thank the organizers of this year's AoIR conference for putting together a wonderful event. I learned so much, made new friends, and reunited with old ones. Next year's AoIR in Denver is of course a long way away. However, while it is fresh in my mind, I wanted to put out the following informal call. As was noted on this listserv a couple of weeks ago, my colleague at the University of California, Irvine, Mark Poster, passed away recently. He was a mentor and friend and I was influenced by his work since my earliest days of graduate school. I am thinking of trying to put together a panel for the 2013 AoIR meetings in Denver celebrating Mark's work and influence on a range of fields having to do with the internet, technology, information, media, culture, and so on. I haven't thought it through in detail but I think a great way to celebrate his legacy would be for people to talk about how their work has been shaped by Mark's thought. If you might be interested in participating in such a panel, could you please email me at tboellst(a)uci.edu. Also, if you can think of others who might be interested (and might not read this list), be they well-established scholars or more junior ones, please email me their names (and email addresses should you have them). New capture devices and media types are reshaping our personal and collective memories, and personal collections are growing in size and complexity. The Personal Digital Archiving 2013 Conference welcomes a broad community working to ensure long-term access for personal collections and archives. This year, the conference theme focuses on the relationships between collective and individual action around preserving personal digital content. Companies and cultural heritage institutions steward information that documents the life and times of private individuals. At the same time, individuals manage and “self- archive” content for future use by themselves and their families. Personal Digital Archiving 2013 invites proposals on the full range of topics relevant to personal digital archiving. Presentations might address materials and format challenges including family archives of photographs and home movies, personal health and financial data, scrapbooking, social network posts, genealogy, blogs, email and other correspondence. Presentations might also address themes that unite digital archives, including interface design for archives; institutional practices; community outreach; tools; and funding models. Additionally the program committee encourages proposals exploring the following questions: * What new social norms are emerging around preservation, access, and disclosure? * How should libraries, museums and archives help collect personal digital materials? * What are some practical strategies for helping libraries, museums and archives conduct personal archiving outreach to their communities? * What are effective outreach strategies for encouraging individuals to undertake personal digital archiving? * How can we cope with the intersection between personal data and collective or social data that is personal? * What tools and services are needed to better enable self-archiving? What models for user interfaces are most appropriate? * What are viable existing economic models that can support personal archives? What new economic models should we evaluate? * What are the the key issues associated with digital estate planning and “the digital afterlife”? Dear fellow-Aoir'ers, As ICA 2013 deadline is fast upon us, Robert Bodle and I also would like to post a CFP on the list. The working title is Politics of Incivility: [insert some sexy byline]. The panel will examine and complicate various anti-social activities such as trolling, hate speech, and others that take place on various online platforms. One of us will be presenting on anti-gay and racist Facebook group and fan pages and the other will be presenting on GNAA's trolling activities on Redditt. We are looking for abstracts that examine trolling networks as counterpublics that complicate mainstream discourse of online communities through disruptive play. We haven't written down a description yet so as not to limit the scope of the panel before we settle on abstracts. Other media initially treated Twitter as offering platforms for celebrities, pools of banality, streams of dumbed-down opinions. But people using Twitter quickly found an enormous range of diverse uses, revelling in opportunities for creativity that microblogging and associated applications offered. People involved Twitter in organising revolutions, disseminating scientific findings, promoting brands, communicating with friends and crafting new forms of artistic endeavours and communications. Where Twitter is not allowed, as in China, other microblogging platforms have taken on similar functions. This conference brings together a range of researchers doing detailed analyses of the discourse, practices, and social interactions of microblogging communities. Seeking participants for HASTAC panel about social media use in the classroom

I’m looking for two or three participants for a panel about the use of new media in the college classroom to be presented at the 2013 HASTAC conference<http://hastac2013.org/cfp/> in Toronto, April 25-28. The style will be a structured conversation among panelist in which we share our experiences, successes, and failures of using social/digital media in the classroom. Because the conference theme is about the past and looking forward, I envision the panel talking about the transformation of technologies alongside the evolution of student skills and literacies. The purpose is to think critically about the possibilities and limitations of using social media as a resource in the classroom and to further explore some of the opportunities and challenges associated with using digital media as a teaching tool. Possible questions could address: Is Live Tweeting in class beneficial or a distraction? How might Wikis support collaborative learning? At a time when students can instantaneously look up information online, how might tests, assignments, and evaluations tap into connected learning in and out of the classroom? Where is the line between collaboration and cheating? What is the purpose of exams, which require students to study and memorize information, in an era in which information is quickly and readily available online? How can social media tools facilitate new modes of learning? What digital skills and literacies should colleges equip students with in order to prepare them for future careers? CFP “Small Data” in a “Big Data” World - International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry (ICQI)

CFP “Small Data” in a “Big Data” World, Panel at International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry (ICQI) 2013 to be held May 15-18, 2013 on the campus of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign IL. Recently the academic research world has been flooded with discussion of the uses and implications of “Big Data.” For those of us whose research focuses on digital environments this discussion includes conferences, grants, special publications, and job announcements that focus on Big Data and the computational turn in social science and humanities research. ‘Big Data’ is not necessarily defined by the size of the data set, for humanities scholars have long been interested in huge textual and image-based corpora. Instead, ‘Big Data’ refers to the increasing complexity of relationships between data objects in a given set, often requiring large-scale computational and algorithmic resources for analysis. ‘Small Data’ research, on the other hand, often begins with a theoretical (e.g., critical race theory) or methodological (e.g., case study or ethnography) approach, which is then applied to digital data drawn from less-popular websites, YouTube videos, or even individual blog posts and comments. Unfortunately, the tools used to analyze Big Data seem to be influencing modes of thought about new media and digital research away from the theoretical and towards the scientistic. For example, in a recent article Bruns and Burgess (2012) argue that humanist, interpretive studies of social media are ‘ideosyncratic, non-repeatable, and non-verifiable’. Although Bruns and Burgess concede that there is space for ‘traditional qualitative methods’, their suggestion is that these methods need to be ‘integrated and innovated’ upon in a ‘big data’ context. Given the increasing amounts of attention (e.g., external funding, public policy, or student interest) ‘big data’ is accruing, where does this leave Small Data research and researchers? This panel seeks to explore the position of Small Data in relation to the discussion and/or use of Big Data. As the definition of Big Data is still in flux we are using Bruns & Burgess (2012) to ground our individual presentation. We are seeking presentations that will explore a variety of views on this turn toward Big Data and the impact on the researched, the researcher, and academia. References: Bruns, A., & Burgess, J. While we endeavor to provide projectors or other equipment for participants who make a request at the time of submission, presenters will be responsible for bringing all required technology with them. We require: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio; 3) a half-page abstract of the work you would like to present and a link to a project url with images or video documentation; 3) any technical requirements or other support (including any space requirements beyond a table) that may be required for the presentation. Please indicate any equipment that is absolutely required and that you cannot bring with you. In the event that we cannot guarantee access to the equipment, we regret that we may not be able to accept your demo. Digital and/or Print Posters. Print posters (4 x 3’) and electronic posters (to be projected) are solicited for emerging projects, ideas, and scholars. In presenting your research with a poster, you should aim to use the poster as a means for generating active discussion of your research. Limit the text to about one-fourth of the poster space, and use visuals (graphs, photographs, schematics, maps, etc.) to tell your story. Creative Performances. We are soliciting creative interventions, too – e-lit readings, ARGs and mobile cinema, talks that cross boundaries between the academic and the poetic, tech wearables, etc.. For consideration we require: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio; 3) a one or two page abstract of the workshop that clearly describes the goals of the workshop, its relationship to the conference theme; its target audience (and any specialized background required for participation) and whether the proposal is for a full day or half-day workshop; 3) a brief explanation of the space and technical resources required to run the workshop. Hi fellow AoIRists, Hope everyone had fun at IR13! As you all know, the ICA deadline is quickly approaching, and I'm looking for a final panelist for a group looking at (qualitative or quantitative) social science questions using social media data with a combination of computational and social scientific methods. The panel is tentatively titled "Downsizing Data: Analyzing Social Digital Traces," to emphasize narrowing social media's big data issues into specific samples and particular questions. Our current panelists are looking at qualitative research questions present in information sharing on Twitter, networks and identity on Tumblr, and social behaviors reflected in data on Foursquare. We're looking for someone who is working on another platform different from these (or potentially a cross-platform project). Again, we're aiming for someone who can speak to using computational methods (for data collection or analysis) in the analysis of social science questions (whether qualitative or quantitative).
