Digital Labor: The Internet as Playground and Factory Edited by Trebor Scholz Digital Labor asks whether life on the internet is mostly work, or play. We tweet, we tag photos, we link, we review books, we comment on blogs, we remix media, and we upload video to create much of the content that makes up the web. And large corporations profit on our online activity by tracking our interests, affiliations, and habits—and then collecting and selling the data. What is the nature of this interactive ‘labor’ and the new forms of digital sociality that it brings into being? The international, interdisciplinary contributors to Digital Labor suggest that there is no longer a clear divide between ‘the personal’ and ‘work,’ as every aspect of life drives the digital economy: sexual desire, boredom, friendship—and all become fodder for speculative profit. They argue that we are living in a total labor society and the way in which we are commoditized, racialized, and engendered is profoundly and disturbingly normalized by the dominant discourse of digital culture. Digital Labor poses a series of questions about our digital present: How is the global crisis of capitalism linked to the hidden labor of the digital economy? How do we address that most online interaction, whether work or play, for profit or not, is taking place on corporate platforms? How can we acknowledge moments of exploitation while not eradicating optimism, inspiration, and the many instances of individual financial and political empowerment? In response to these questions, this collection offers new definitions of digital labor that address and challenge the complex, hybrid realities of the digital economy. ***REMINDER*** Digital Humanities and the Study of the Web and Web Archives PhD-seminar organised by the Digital Humanities Lab/NetLab (Niels Ole Finnemann and Niels Brügger), Vejle, Denmark, 3-5 December 2012 Today the Internet is the medium which holds the most multifaceted set of materials documenting contemporary social, cultural, and political life. It has become the fulcrum for the general development of media, including mass media and a growing variety of digital devices. If the communicative infrastructure of society in the late 20th century was centered on television, it is today centered on the Internet. As a variety of digital media penetrates all spheres in society, they also play a still more dominant role for the social sciences, humanities and arts. They do so in three respects: as archives for contemporary life, as a toolbox for the study of all sorts of digital collections, including digitized collections of non-digital materials (often labeled cultural heritage), and as a means for enforced communication within all spheres of society. In this course we will concentrate on the first of these aspects, the role of the Internet and particularly on online and archived web materials for scholars studying contemporary political, social, and cultural phenomena. Hey everyone, I'd like to let you know about Truthy, Information diffusion research at Indiana University's Center for Complex Networks and Systems Research Truthy is a research project that helps you understand how communication spreads on Twitter. We currently focus on tweets about politics, social movements, and news from the past 90 days. We have been collecting data for the* past 2 years* from the *random sample *provided by Twitter. The main research interests include *providing an interface for social scientists* who don't have access or the ability to collect this random sample at scale *(FOR FREE! *[citations suggested]*). * We provide and interface for you to: ** Study online communication networks with interactive interfaces that visualize data and allow you to indentify interesting users. ** Download recent tweets, tweet volume over time, network layout, and statistics about users (such as *predicted political partisanship*, *sentiment score*, *language*, and *activity over time*). You can also look at our new interactive visualization of election-related memes (target audience is the public) http://truthy.indiana.edu/elections This tool allows the public to investigate questions such as: "How does volume change over time in response to political events?" "Who are the most influential users?" "How does information spread in the social network?" *** Next steps? We are working on an API so you can pull our social network data for the past two years by writing simple python scripts. November 2012. In the last decade, Online Social Networks started to play an increasingly important role in our communications. User privacy and security are two of the friction points that emerge when communications get mediated in Online Social Networks (OSNs). At the For Your Eyes Only Conference, young and senior academics will convene to discuss privacy and security in Online Social Networks. This will be a discussion that crosses disciplinary boundaries as well as those of communities of practice. We will approach the issues raised from legal, technical, social, and economic perspectives, and, will discuss consequences of our findings for regulation, education and systems design in six panels. Specifically, on the first conference day participants will focus on the privacy pitfalls for social media users. These include the commodification of their personal data, uninformed consent strategies, the right to privacy, the protection of personal data and the (absence of a) right to be forgotten. Opportunities and risks related to minors on OSNs will also be discussed from various perspectives. For each topic, regulatory challenges will be identified. On the second day of the conference socio-technical solutions as well as the responsibilization of users with respect to privacy are central to the debate. Participants will discuss how privacy and security can be integrated into design from the early conception of systems, look at nudging as a design strategy, and present concrete proposals for improving the privacy and security infrastructures of online social networks. We expect an audience of academics, public organizations, companies, members of NGO’s as well as governments, artists, activists, designers and developers. The next e-seminar will be based around a paper by Daniel Miller and Jolynna Sinanan and the discussant will be Daniel Taghioff. The abstract of the paper is below. The paper itself should be available for everyone to download and read on our website about a week before the e-seminar begins on the 9th of October. The 'old hands' can skip this paragraph. For people new to the Media Anthropology e-seminars, they last two weeks and begin and end on a Tuesday (though I'm not sure how that tradition got locked in). We begin with an email from the discussant who provides some insights into what he or she considers to be some of the most important contributions of the paper or the most serious issues that would benefit from further clarification. We then give the author/s a chance to respond to the discussant's initial comments. After the author's response, the e-seminar is open to anyone on the list. We don't do strict moderation, but if the conversation is grinding down into an unproductive loop then I will contact people off list and suggest moving on. These are a great opportunity to really examine a piece of work and the ideas surrounding it, so be sure to put aside a little time to read the paper in advance. 9 October - 23 October WEBCAM AND THE THEORY OF ATTAINMENT Daniel Miller and Jolynna Sinanan (UCL). The seminar paper will begin with a summary of a book whose first draft is near to completion, concerning the impact of Webcam (mainly Skype). It provides a first introduction to what we call A Theory of Attainment, which provides the conclusion to this volume. It shows how this theory builds on earlier discussions found in the edited volume Digital Anthropology and The Internet: An Ethnographic Approach. The Theory of Attainment is intended to facilitate the anthropology of new media generally, and not just webcam. The theory is then illustrated briefly in relation to two themes: self-consciousness and intimacy. The remainder of the paper is given over to a discussion of our sense of place. It shows how webcam facilitates projects that both de-stabilise and stabilise our relationship to location. Juxtaposing these two opposed developments brings us back in conclusion to the Theory of Attainment.
