************************************************************ CALL FOR PAPERS ************************************************************ Collaborative Organizations and Social Media 2013 (COSM2013) Bowdoin College, Brunswick, ME Friday, April 12 2013 @ Bowdoin College http://socialnetworks.bowdoin.edu/cosm2013/ ************************************************************ Social media and social networking sites have become important objects of interdisciplinary study. “Collaborative Organizations and Social Media” (COSM) is a one-day symposium which will consider the ways in which developing scholarship might be incorporated into thinking critically about how social computing may be affecting and even forming organizations. The focus will be around exploring the use of social media in collaborative organizational structures. We invite participants to this inaugural conference. This conference will enable participants to present on their current research in this emerging field. COSM2013 seeks to tackle, in particular, the ways in which we can use the insights of multiple disciplines to answer these questions. Dates and Location The conference will be held April 12, 2013 on the campus of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. The location is easily accessible from Boston as well as by air from Portland Airport [PWM]. Format We plan to curate some open submission panels as well as an invited panel and a keynote session on social media and collaborative organizations. The symposium will consist of invited talks from prominent researchers in the field, oral paper presentations of selected papers, and a poster session. Prolegomena to a Digital Labour Theory of Value. tripleC – Journal for a Global Sustainable Information Society 10 (2): 692-740. http://www.triple-c.at/index.php/tripleC/article/view/443 Abstract Due to the global capitalist crisis, neoliberalism and the logic of commodification of everything have suffered cracks, fissures and holes. There is a return of the interest in Marx, which requires us to think about the role of Marxism in Media and Communication Studies. This paper contributes to this task by discussing foundations of contemporary Marxist media and communication studies, including a focus on the renewed interest in Dallas Smythe’s audience commodity category as part of the digital labour debate. Dallas Smythe reminds us of the importance of engagement with Marx’s works for studying the media in capitalism critically. Both Critical Theory and Critical Political Economy of the Media and Communication have been criticized for being one-sided. Such interpretations are mainly based on selective readings. They ignore that in both approaches there has been with different weightings a focus on aspects of media commodification, audiences, ideology and alternatives. Critical Theory and Critical Political Economy are complementary and should be combined in Critical Media and Communication Studies today. Dallas Smythe’s notion of the audience commodity has gained new relevance in the debate about corporate Internet services’ exploitation of digital labour. The exploitation of digital labour involves processes of coercion, alienation and appropriation.

Karen -- Faculty Position Opening in the School of Communication and the Arts The Media Arts Department in the School of Communications and the Arts at Marist College invites applications for a tenure-track faculty appointment to teach Interactive Media & Game Design courses in the newly established B.A. in Media Studies and Production, commencing Fall 2013. The successful candidate will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of interactive media, its technologies, theories, and production processes, and possess knowledge of traditional and experimental approaches related to interactive media. Appointment Rank and Qualifications: Assistant Professor. Qualified candidates will hold a Ph.D., M.F.A. or other terminal degree in New Media, Human-Computer Interaction, Game Studies, Media Studies, or in a relevant field at the time of the appointment, and possess a record of teaching, scholarship or creative work, and service commensurate with the appointment. Candidates with significant work toward degree completion may be considered. Candidates must have proficiency in both PC and MAC-based computer environments, as well as different industry-standard design applications and game authoring tools (such as Flash/Actionscript, HTML5, CSS, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Premiere, InDesign, Illustrator, GameMaker, Scratch, or Unity 3D). Industry or practical experience in designing games, interactive applications, social media, or mobile media is a plus, as is experience with UI/UX, interaction design, experience design, and information architecture. The successful candidate will also show commitment to curriculum development, an interest in developing courses in interactive media for traditional and online instruction, and in converting existing courses where applicable for online instruction. Duties. • Teach seven classes a year in the Interactive Media & Game Design concentration, including a foundations course in digital tools. Other Interactive Media/Game Studies courses could include: Media Literacy, Interactive Media, Game Production, Introduction to Media Studies, Media Aesthetics, and Media Theory. • Conduct research and/or creative work in the candidate’s area of expertise leading to tenure and promotion. • Engage in academic advising, and service to the institution and to the candidate’s academic discipline.
