For this reason, M&S is gaining a primary role in many industrial and research fields, such as space, critical infrastructures, manufacturing, emergency management, biomedical systems and sustainable future. However, as the complexity of the investigated systems increases and the types of investigations widens, the cost of M&S activities increases for the more complex models and for the communications among a wider number and variety of M&S stakeholders (e.g., sub-domain experts, simulator users, simulator engineers, and final system users). To address the increasing costs of M&S activities, collaborative technologies must be introduced to support these activities by fostering the sharing and reuse of models, by facilitating the communications among M&S stakeholders, and more generally by integrating processes, tools and platforms. Aside from seeking applications of collaborative technologies to M&S activities, the track seeks innovative contributions that deal with the application of M&S practices in the field of collaborative engineering platforms. These platforms are continuously becoming more complex, and therefore their design requires systematic approaches to meet the required quality of collaboration. This is important for two reasons: to reduce rework activities on the actual collaborative environment, and to maximize the productivity and the quality of the process the collaborative environment supports. M&S offers the methodologies and tools for such investigations and therefore it can be used to improve the quality of collaborative environments. A non-exhaustive list of topics of interest includes: * collaborative requirements modeling * collaborative environments for M&S * collaborative Systems of Systems M&S * business proces modeling for collaborative environments * agent-based M&S * collaborative distributed simulation * collaborative component-based M&S * net-centric M&S * web-based M&S * model sharing and reuse * model building and evaluation * modeling and simulation of business processes * modeling for collaboration * simulation-based performance analysis of collaborative engineering platforms * model-driven approaches for collaborative engineering * domain specific languages for collaborative M&S * databases and repositories for M&S * distributed virtual environments * virtual research environment for M&S * collaborative DEVS M&S * multi-method M&S To stimulate creativity, however, the track maintains a wider scope and invites interested researchers to present contributions that offer original perspectives on collaboration and M&S. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ On-Line Submissions and Publication +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CoMetS'14 intends to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss key issues, approaches, open problems, innovative applications and trends in the track research area. This year, we will accept submissions in two forms: (1) papers (2) poster and industrial presentations (1) Papers should contain original contributions not published or submitted elsewhere. Papers up to six pages (including figures, tables and references) can be submitted. Papers should follow the IEEE format, which is single spaced, two columns, 10 pt Times/Roman font. All submissions should be electronic (in PDF) and will be peer-reviewed by at least three program committee members. Accepted full papers will be included in the proceedings and published by the IEEE Computer Society Press (IEEE approval pending). Please note that at least one author for each accepted paper should register to attend WETICE 2014 (http://www.wetice.org) to have the paper published in the proceedings. (2) Posters should describe a practical, on-the-field, experience in any domain area using collaborative M&S. The poster submission requires the submission of an abstract for evaluation from the organizers. Accepted abstract must be followed by the submission of a poster which will be displayed at conference time. With the poster submission, a short (15 minutes) slot might be allocated for oral presentation illustrating the industrial case. The presentation may also include a live demo, but it should not include commercial details. Dear colleagues, In the context of the 9th International Conference on (Im)Politeness, which will be held at the University of Huddersfield (9 – 11 July 2014), we are organizing an invited panel on the language aggression and conflict. Language studies have for years tended to concentrate on the analysis of harmonious interactions. However, more recently, the study of acrimonious interaction has started gathering momentum. It is in fact a buzzword with remarkable contemporary currency, one that is instrumentalized as a constant search for new technologies, means of production, market adaptations, scientific discoveries and social changes. As a fundamental tenet in Western systems of thought, it is also ? and has long been ? inscribed within the West?s very view of itself as more successful and more ?progressive? than other societies. Note, for example, G.W.F. Hegel?s famous juxtaposition of Europe?s ever- changing art against the allegedly stagnant visual culture of India: the first modality accounted for the privileged position of the West as the locus of the emanation of universal Geist; while the latter stipulated an essentially ?un-progressive? timelessness in India. The Western valuation and definition of innovation has thereby been mobilized as a justification for diverse colonial, post-colonial and now neoliberal enterprises. It operates as a smoke screen to preserve dominant power regimes both within the West and globally, concealing simultaneously the biased valuation of cultural production, and the unequal distribution of technological and scientific headway among diverse social strata. This is the case even as the current global financial crisis challenges the West?s ability to regenerate perpetually. In fact, the stakes involved in the Western impetus to innovate seem to intensify even as recent projections of economic acceleration in several non-Western countries rouse fears that the West is losing ground as innovation?s main stimulant. The innovation paradigm is moreover implicit within the bulk of humanistic academic production. As a case in point, the Greenbergian approach to art history, which dominated much of the twentieth century, revolves indisputably around a teleology of formal innovation. Meanwhile, within a number of current academic discussions ? for instance those concerning experimentation and invention in the history of science (Galison); global art history (Elkins); visual culture studies (Moxey); history of ideas (Godin); the philosophy of mondialisation (Nancy); media archaeology (Parikka); technological obsolescence (Kittler); and the aesthetics of failure (Halberstam) ? innovation is tacitly treated with caution, if not skepticism. Given this tangle of collusions and complexities, how are we to approach and define innovation in academic discourse? Is the paradigm purely a means of disarming social pressure for an all-inclusive equalized prosperity; or might it be recuperated to provide a stimulus for sustainable growth? Can we understand innovation in a broader global spectrum without falling into the trap of cultural essentialism; or does this concept perpetuate Western-centric views and mores? Can the concept of innovation be used for the analysis of historical periods; or does it figure too easily in teleological narratives? With these questions in mind, we are opening an enquiry into the concept of innovation. We invite paper proposals addressing a broad range of academic disciplines and historical periods. Papers might address, but are by no means restricted to, the following questions: ? Socio-economic implications of innovation. How do societies and specific agents adapt to new conditions once their old ways of life have been destroyed? ? The politics of innovation. Does innovation bring betterment or deprivation? ? What are the criteria of innovation? ? Challenging the Western canon of art built on the notions of style, progress, and originality ? Technological progress ? Patents ? Is Western-centrism pervasive in the concept of innovation? ? How does innovation affect personal identities (video games, Facebook, etc.)? ? How is innovation different from change? ? It operates as a smoke screen to preserve dominant power regimes both within the West and globally, concealing simultaneously the biased valuation of cultural production, and the unequal distribution of technological and scientific headway among diverse social strata. This is the case even as the current global financial crisis challenges the West?s ability to regenerate perpetually. In fact, the stakes involved in the Western impetus to innovate seem to intensify even as recent projections of economic acceleration in several non-Western countries rouse fears that the West is losing ground as innovation?s main stimulant. The innovation paradigm is moreover implicit within the bulk of humanistic academic production. As a case in point, the Greenbergian approach to art history, which dominated much of the twentieth century, revolves indisputably around a teleology of formal innovation. Meanwhile, within a number of current academic discussions ? for instance those concerning experimentation and invention in the history of science (Galison); global art history (Elkins); visual culture studies (Moxey); history of ideas (Godin); the philosophy of mondialisation (Nancy); media archaeology (Parikka); technological obsolescence (Kittler); and the aesthetics of failure (Halberstam) ? innovation is tacitly treated with caution, if not skepticism. Given this tangle of collusions and complexities, how are we to approach and define innovation in academic discourse? Is the paradigm purely a means of disarming social pressure for an all-inclusive equalized prosperity; or might it be recuperated to provide a stimulus for sustainable growth? Can we understand innovation in a broader global spectrum without falling into the trap of cultural essentialism; or does this concept perpetuate Western-centric views and mores? Can the concept of innovation be used for the analysis of historical periods; or does it figure too easily in teleological narratives? With these questions in mind, we are opening an enquiry into the concept of innovation. We invite paper proposals addressing a broad range of academic disciplines and historical periods. Papers might address, but are by no means restricted to, the following questions: ? Socio-economic implications of innovation. How do societies and specific agents adapt to new conditions once their old ways of life have been destroyed? ? The politics of innovation. Does innovation bring betterment or deprivation? ? As a result, globally distributed virtual teams now support the work of organizations across the spectrum of products and services. Such teams are used by a range of for-profit and non-profit organizations including businesses, government organizations, military, and educational institutions. These organizations are increasingly employing individuals located in different nations to engage in various types of collaborative work via ICTs. As a result of such factors, much of the modern workforce is now migrating toward a virtual model of work, and forces associated with globalization are changing the nature of competitiveness in the new economy. Individuals, in turn, must often adapt rapidly to virtual environments and do so with little or no formal preparation in the types of professional communication practices essential to success in such contexts. As a result, individuals working in internationally distributed teams must generally learn from their mistakes, an effective but often costly approach. Moreover, individuals must also often adapt to working in an environment in which they are regularly paired with new colleagues and clients from different nations, cultures, and language groups. Thus, the modern distributed workplace requires employees to account for and address three central factors—technology, culture, and language—in order to succeed in most work-related tasks. An all-important question arising from this situation is, “How can we better prepare these individuals for this international, online context?” A 2012 IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication special issue on global training reveals, however, that very little information on training—particularly global virtual communication training—has been published in the major professional communication journals in the last ten years. Such a gap needs to be closed if educators and trainers alike wish to prepare adult learners to be successful participants in current (and future) business practices and processes. This special issue on education and training for globally distributed virtual teams seeks to address this topic through articles on how best to prepare individuals to succeed in this new workplace. In particular, the editors are interested in articles that answer questions such as: • What types of education and training are most desired by managers and participants of global virtual teams? • How can organizations best prepare virtual team members for working across boundaries of language? What issues affect translation and terminology? What do team members most need to know about World Englishes, English as a Second Language, or English for Specific Purposes? • How can organizations better prepare employees to collaborate and cooperate online and across cultural boundaries? • How can social media be used to prepare individuals for working in intercultural online contexts? • What legal issues can affect or should be included in global virtual team training? What should participants in global virtual teams know about proprietary information and privacy? In addition, the editors of this special issue welcome articles such as: • Industry commentaries (refer to “types of articles” below). • Critical analyses of the many published task/technology models that support global virtual teams. • Critical analyses of virtual team studies in areas such as technical training, adult education, human resources development, educational technology, human performance technology, technical communication, and user experience design. The guest editors are also interested in discussing other prospective topics with potential contributors. Meanwhile, within a number of current academic discussions – for instance those concerning experimentation and invention in the history of science (Galison); global art history (Elkins); visual culture studies (Moxey); history of ideas (Godin); the philosophy of mondialisation (Nancy); media archaeology (Parikka); technological obsolescence (Kittler); and the aesthetics of failure (Halberstam) – innovation is tacitly treated with caution, if not skepticism. Given this tangle of collusions and complexities, how are we to approach and define innovation in academic discourse? Is the paradigm purely a means of disarming social pressure for an all-inclusive equalized prosperity; or might it be recuperated to provide a stimulus for sustainable growth? Can we understand innovation in a broader global spectrum without falling into the trap of cultural essentialism; or does this concept perpetuate Western-centric views and mores? Can the concept of innovation be used for the analysis of historical periods; or does it figure too easily in teleological narratives? With these questions in mind, we are opening an enquiry into the concept of innovation. We invite paper proposals addressing a broad range of academic disciplines and historical periods. Papers might address, but are by no means restricted to, the following questions: • Socio-economic implications of innovation. How do societies and specific agents adapt to new conditions once their old ways of life have been destroyed? • The politics of innovation. Does innovation bring betterment or deprivation? • What are the criteria of innovation? • Challenging the Western canon of art built on the notions of style, progress, and originality • Technological progress • Patents • Is Western-centrism pervasive in the concept of innovation? • How does innovation affect personal identities (video games, Facebook, etc.)? • How is innovation different from change? • The contestations of innovation; the discursive counterpoints to innovation • Centre vs. periphery; milieus of innovation • Instances of anachronism masked as innovation in culture from the Middle Ages to the present day. Recurring regimes: the old in the new, the new in the old • Does materiality matter in innovation? • Temporality and innovation • Commodity culture and innovation We welcome proposals for 20-minute presentations. The Symposium is to address, explore and exchange information on the state-of-the-art and practice in the broad multi disciplinary field of social computing and new media. Participation is extended to researchers, designers, educators and interested parties in all disciplines and specialties (computer science, linguistics, psychology, statistics, sociology, multimedia and semantic web technologies, …). *The SoMNeT Symposium main themes include (but are not limited to) the following:* - Social (media) Network Data Collection, Analysis and Visualization - Content/ Text Data Analysis AND Integration with Network Data - Computational/ Algorithmic Solutions and Datasets Related to Both of These Themes *PAPER SUBMISSION* You are invited to submit original and unpublished research works on above and other topics related to social computing, social networks and new social media.
