The language of social network theory often casts projects in terms of their connectivity, neglecting material and immaterial mobilities. The increasing proliferation of technologies such as cellular data systems or infrastructure projects which enable new forms of mobility, are just some of the many recent developments that force us to question the conceptual lens through which we view networks. We welcome papers that study the (intimate) relationships and collaborations enabled through technologies and the ways in which they function as a major tool for the re-assembling of networks throughout the world, both "traditional" and otherwise. Panelists are encouraged to critically engage with concepts such as "actor-network theory", "social network analysis" or "assemblages" and papers may expand the framework of network theory or dismiss it altogether. The (potential for) innovations stemming from re-defining, re-configuring and re-purposing of mobile technologies are of particular interest. The panel seeks to challenge notions of modern-day affiliation and association by taking into account societies labelled both "developed" and "backward". Panellists are encouraged to probe possibilities for bringing about new orders of communication and collaboration, ones that break boundaries of tradition, drive innovation, perhaps even spur "revolution" - be it through social media, mobile phones, mobile banking or other technologies. The panel has no geographic focus and papers can either be entirely conceptual, or draw upon particular ethnographic case studies. Soliciting opinions about using Amazon's Mechanical Turk (aka Mturk) for survey participant recruitment

While Qualtrics and SurveyMonkey seem to be generally well respected, they also come with hefty price tags for participant recruitment ($5-10 per American respondent). Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (aka Mturk), on the other hand, can recruit participants for far less (<$1/respondent). What is the AoIR consensus on utilizing Mturk? I’ve seen articles both for and against using the service. POSTER SUBMISSIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED Poster submissions can now be made using conftool. Click Here To Access<https://www.conftool.com/iscram2014/> The ISCRAM 2014 poster session will provide an opportunity for authors to interact informally with conference attendees, using a standard-size poster as a visual aid. Presenting a poster is also a good way to discuss and receive feedback on a work in progress that has not been fully developed into a paper. To facilitate this interaction, the ISCRAM 2014 poster session will be held in conference common areas, where foot traffic is expected to be high. Poster proposals should be submitted on the regular ISCRAM template<http://iscram2014.org/sites/default/files/misc/ISCRAM2014_PaperTemplate.doc>, consisting of an extended abstract, with a maximum of two pages describing the project that would be the topic of the poster for presentation and discussion. You might include a small version of a figure or two that would be in the poster, such as a screen shot of a system you will be describing. Posters are submitted to a track using Conftool<https://www.conftool.com/iscram2014/>. The deadline is January 20, 2014. Doctoral Colloquium attendees are required to present a poster as part of their attendance in the colloquium. If your poster proposal is accepted, you will be notified and then you can prepare the actual poster. Posters may be a maximum of 45”x 45” (114.3 cm x 114.3 cm). Posters will be hung on our poster display boards with Velcro©-style hook-and-loop dots. The dots should be the “hook” side as the stand provides the “loop” side to attach. The conference will provide each poster with about ten (10) dots, which should be sufficient to hang an average weight 45”x45” poster. No tape, staples, push-pins or thumbtacks may be used to hang your poster.

Santiago, Chile, September 1-4, 2014 http://ht.acm.org/ht2014/ February 21, 2014: Workshop proposals due ========================================================================= The ACM Hypertext conference focuses on all aspects of modern hypertext research including social media, semantic web, dynamic and computed hypertext and hypermedia as well as narrative systems and applications. Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the 25th ACM Conference on Hypertext and Social Media conference. Hypertext 2014 workshops will provide participants with opportunities to discuss and explore emerging areas of Hypertext and Social Media with fellow students, researchers, and practitioners from Industry and Academia. The goals of theworkshops are to provide a a more informal setting for exchanging opinions, to share experiences, presenting ideas, foster research community and identify open problems and/or explore directions for future research. As such, they also offer a good opportunity for researchers to present their work and to obtain feedback from an interested community in an interactive atmosphere. Proposals are especially encouraged on emerging topics, somehow related to the main conference tracks (links and connection between people, open data and the semantic of things, user experience and adaptive linking), but are not limited to other (novel) topics which might be of interest for the hypertext community. Acceptance ofworkshop proposals will be based on the experience and background of the organizers in the topic, and on the relevance of the subject matter with regard to the topics addressed in the main conference. We welcome proposals for different types of workshops, from working groups on a specific topic to more traditional conference-like workshops. However, we prefer interactive workshops that guarantee richer active interactions among participants and provide significant room for controversial and stimulating discussions. We preferentially would rather proposals for half-day workshops. The need for a full-day workshop should be motivated by some particular reason. I have a good amount of books on the topic but I just wanted to inquire which ones you know have worked out best in your classes. This particular student is also interested in learning about the practical end of social media. Kind of like a "best practices" book. Or even the industry end of social media... The Internet Censorship is Getting Deeper in Turkey

The law proposal and its justification, which has been presented to the presidency of the Turkish Parliament by the approval of Justice and Development Party about the change in “The regulation of internet-based broadcasting and the struggle with crimes that are committed via these broadcasting” is a threatening text in many ways. The motion, which is expected to be passed inattentively within an omnibus bill will not solve the existing problems. It includes suggestions that would deteriorate the current status. Firstly, at the justification part of the motion, there is not a reference to the decision of European Human Rights Court against Turkey with regard to this law (no. 5651). This decision, which has been made as a consequence of Ahmet Yıldırım Case that Alternative Informatics Association took it to the EHRC, approved the opposition of this law against freedom of expression. What Internet users need in Turkey is a reform of this law in terms of rights and freedoms and all of the access restrictions should be excluded from the regulations. However, the motion suggests the exact opposite by centralizing and empowering the access restrictions. The motion also pays no attention to the views of NGOs, which are important actors of the subject. Each NGO that work within the informatics field in Turkey is strongly criticizing this law. Moreover, not only NGOs but also a great number of lawyers, bureaucrats, politicians and internet publishers also criticize the law. In contrast to the motion, they do not consider access restrictions as a solution. It’s really sad to see the motion uses “the discrimination card” to justify the restrictions. Censorship never should be considered as a solution to solve racism, hatred speech and sexism. Since we have lots of examples of how the government interprets and enforces this kind of laws in the recent history of Turkey, we’re concerned that this justification will cause much more dangerous enforcements in the next days. The motion proposes to apply the IP and URL based access restriction methods along with the domain name restriction which is the current restriction method in Turkey. Also the motion adds the term of “et cetera” to define the restrictions which may help the government to easily apply different and dangerous restriction methods. As if IP and URL based access restriction methods aren’t scary and dangerous enough! Applying the URL based access restriction method actively; the internet censorship level in Turkey will reach the internet censorship level in China in a few years. To achieve these methods the ISPs will have to make some changes and configurations on their systems which will lead us to a slow, controlling and monitored Internet. On the other hand The ISP Union proposition will threaten net neutrality and help large companies to entirely dominate the market. Only the companies with the proper ban and control utilities can be a member of this unity and the other non-member companies cannot able to provide internet services anymore which leads some of them to file for bankruptcy and hand the market in to the big players. Decreasing agent numbers on the market will help the government to control and monitor users much more easily. Rising of the controlling and surveillance because of the Weak compotation on the market will be a threat for our rights and freedoms and especially for net neutrality. The projected period for the ISPs to retain data is 1-2 years which is a very long period. The Government’s need for retaining data for this long, brings to mind the possibility of using the data to profile people for various purposes or even worse to tag them. Considering all the subjects we mentioned above, it’s safe to say this regulation will make the situation much more worse. We believe that amending Law No: 5651 will only empower the parts of the law which are criticized by the people for a very long time. As we stated in our Association’s “The State of Internet in Turkey in 2013 Report” [1] what should be done, is not to extend censorship and banning policies but to bridge digital divide, to popularize the usage of internet and to improve the new media literacy. As the Alternative Informatics Association we are in the favor of a freer and less controlled internet where people freely express themselves and access all the information they need without any surveillance. Unfortunately this regulation ignores the objectivity of the networks, makes it easier to restrict the freedom of speech, controlling and surveillance on the internet by establishing monopoly. Carrying a motion with this content will cause the internet in Turkey to plunge into the darkness permanently. We invite the members of the parliament who legislate law in behalf of internet users, the users, NGOs who represent them and the subject matter experts to consider the verdict of (ECHR). We also invite our citizens to look after the Internet and to support the events actively which will be held Worldwide against censorship, control and surveillance acts.
