The Digital Humanities and Journalism group at the Insight National Centre for Data Analytics @NUI Galway (formerly know as DERI) is seeking outstanding candidates for two full-time fixed term Research Assistant positions in trust and provenance in Social Semantic Web and journalism realm. This position is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and is available from 1st February 2014. The successful candidates will work on a project on ‘trust verification for social media content and sources for news production’. She/he will conduct research on the area of social event/breaking news detection and verification, social data provenance, Social Networks Analysis, Semantic Web and Linked Data. She/he will also be expected to play a strong development role in the project, and to collaborate with key national broadcasting organisations. The Insight Centre for Data Analytics at NUI Galway (former DERI) hosts one of the most internationally-recognised Linked Data research groups in the world, and is dedicated to research aimed at enabling Networked Knowledge using Semantic Web technologies. Essential criteria for the applicant: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Informatics, or relevant subjects. Strong Java or Python programming skills. Minimum two years software development experience. Knowledge of software design, development and maintenance processes. Strong background in front- and backend Web application development. Have experience in some, if not all, of the following: Social Network Analysis Social Media Provenance Semantic Web and Linked Data technologies Stream processing Proven ability to work independently or in a team environment. The applicant should be creative and enthusiastic, with excellent communication skills. It is desirable that applicant will possess: A Masters or MPhil degree in Computer Science, Informatics or relevant subjects. A Masters degree in Journalism, Communication, Political Studies or relevant subjects. Familiarity with the news and media industry, knowledge of the news production process and preferably having worked in/with such organisation. Experience in / familiarity with the following is highly desirable: Digital/Online/Citizen Journalism Natural Language Processing Text Mining Data Visualisation Data Verification A good record of theoretical and applied research on the Social Web and the Semantic Web, warranted by a scientific publication record in workshops, conferences, journals and book chapters and/or awards in national or international challenges. Industrial experience and the ability to collaborate with industry partners. Experience in Web-related standardisation activities (including W3C) as both author and editor. Excellent interpersonal communication and scientific writing skills. Salary: €24,592 - €31,083 per annum (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply). Looking for recommendatio of Apps for doing Ethnography

Howdy! I am looking for recommendations of apps for doing ethnographic work. I am mapping out a new project and have found there are a growing number of research apps out there for doing qualitative data collection in the field. I am wondering what experience AoIR folks have had with these tools, and which ones seem to be the best and most versatile, especially for recording field notes, organizing data and if they seem to work best when using tablets of phone platforms. Developed by a student, Shawn Fanning, with the help of his friend Shawn Parker and uncle John Fanning, Napster established music downloading as a mass phenomenon. By 2001, 50 million users had downloaded content with Napster. Many other applications followed – Gnutella, Kazaa, LimeWire, eMule, Soulseek, BitTorrent, among others –further developing and entrenching p2p technology. Online music distribution has been fiercely contested since Napster. Online availability has changed the way music is produced, sold, distributed, shared and consumed. While these changes are often decried or celebrated through well-rehearsed positions, their implications can also be exaggerated, as attending to contemporary industry business models and persisting analog formats would suggest. Building on multi- and cross-disciplinary approaches addressing developments in the 15 years since the advent of Napster, we seek papers that advance contemporary debates associated with music downloading (authorized and illicit) and its consequences and ramifications. The Laboratory of Systems Modeling and Dependability (LM2S) (at University of Technology of Troyes, France) is proposing a Masters internship on the topic of "Visualization and exploration of big data streams using spatio-temporal graphs". Depending on the results, this position can lead to a PhD thesis. Call for Papers and Topic Proposals: Joss Whedon: A Celebration (Apologies for cross-posting) Now accepting submissions and ideas for the second annual Pop Culture Colloquium at DePaul University in Chicago! The Media and Cinema Studies program at DePaul University is hosting a one-day celebratory colloquium in honor of the work of Joss Whedon on Saturday, May 03, from 9-6. This event will feature roundtable discussions from scholars and fans of Whedon, speaking about the cultural impact of his work, as well as analyzing aspects of his television shows and films. The even will also feature special guests, screenings, screenwriting workshops, and (perhaps) a sing-a-long or two… The audience for this event is both graduate and undergraduate students, both fans and scholars, and the focus should be on informed and enlightening discussion rather than formal academic papers. “Joss Whedon: A Celebration” will take place on DePaul’s Loop campus.
