The theme is “Innovation, connection and co-operation in web data”, see more below. Proposals The presentations should be aimed at 20 mins for single papers and up to 60 mins for panel sessions of up to 3 speakers. Workshops or training for specific web archiving tools, concepts, or issues can be up to half a day in length. Abstracts should include the name of the speaker, a title, conference sub-theme (see below) and be no more than 300 words. This interplay is the theme for this year’s GA at Stanford, in the heart of Silicon Valley. It has four sub-themes: Access How can the providers of archives harness the power of new technologies to improve the experience of users, and to enable them to do more with the content that archives provide ? Which are the innovative projects that show the way, and which are the emerging technologies that will be next ? Can web archiving developers co-operate more and better with others in the field, to mutual benefit ? There are common technical issues at play, such as the scalability of technologies such as Apache Solr for big data: how might expertise best be shared? Research What does truly innovative research look like ? How are researchers, both inside and outside the academic sector, using the archived web now, and what are the questions they would like to ask of the archive, but cannot (yet)? Is there yet innovation in the *methods* that researchers are using; or is the use of web archives still analogous to older paradigms of the use of printed objects ? Further information is available here: registration [1] DLB Access to Material and Immaterial Goods Jan. 23-24, 2015 University of Lucerne, Switzerland The aim of the conference is to explore the relationship between intellectual property and its physical materialisations, with a particular focus on the issue of access and the challenges of new technologies. Though intellectual property protects the intangible, it is indisputable that intellectual property goods (whether they be copyrighted works, patented inventions or trade marks) classically had to be physically materialised in order to be enjoyed or used, such as on canvas, as a pharmaceutical and trade marked products. This materialisation can, however, challenge our theoretical notion of the intangible and the tangible as constituting discrete forms of property and can have serious consequences on access to intellectual property goods. A classic example is that of an owner of an original art work, who may not own the copyright, but who can control access to the work and thereby exert copyright-like rights. New technologies raise further problems relating to the relationship between the intangible and tangible. For example, biotechnology patents that cover or encompass specific cell lines that are not reproducible from the patent disclosure could be seen as protecting something tangible. What exactly constitutes materialisation is also of significance. As an illustration, whether digital reproductions of copyrighted works are considered to be physically materialised can affect the doctrine of exhaustion and, thus, access to a "second-hand" market. Indeed, the move away from classical analogue materialisation, as a consequence of the digital age, highlights the issue of what copyright means when there is no copy in the classical sense. Rettberg analyses today's vernacular self-documentation in the context of the history and theory of visual self-portraits and textual diaries, and as an important part of today's algorithmic culture, critiquing and playing with the "dataism" inherent that culture. Mapping the impact of big data and social media* *(edited by Mirko Tobias Schäfer)* The Journal of Computer Supported and Cooperative Work will publish a special issue on how datafication, big data and social media affect civic life, participation and labour. Information technology affords that almost all aspects of our lives can be translated into data, data that are used for forecasting, assessment, real-time tracking, targeted advertising and polling. The practice of digitization and the role of electronic information media technology affects in various degrees almost all aspects of everyday life. This 'datafication' affects our public sphere as much as our consumption behaviour. A datafied public sphere changes the game of opinion polling, political debate and civic action. As a result our understanding of citizenship, democracy, public sphere and public space is fundamentally transforming. This special issue investigates to what extent datafication transforms governance, labour and civic participation. We solicit contributions that address the emerging algorithmic governance through public administrations and corporations:the availability of digital records from birth certificate to curricula vitae, the assessment of work performance, financial transactions, communication records, travel data, health data have contributed to shaping novel forms of managing the population of citizens. Datafication and algorithmic governance affects many areas of everyday life. Each article in this special issue addresses a received truth which circulates unreflected amongst both academics analysing these phenomena and practitioners engaged in the respective scenes. Questioning such myths based on empirical research founded on a rigorous theoretical framework is what a journal such as the Journal of Peer Production can contribute to both academic and activist discourses. Shared machine shops have been around for at least a decade or so, which makes for a good time to evaluate how they live up to their self-professed social missions. Call for expressions of interest PhD Scholarship - Disability on Television: Access, representation and reception Department of Internet Studies Curtin University is looking for an outstanding scholar for a full-time PhD scholarship to work on a large-scale study of disability and television. The study aims to assess the mutually important areas of accessibility and representation to explore the importance of digital televisions to the social inclusion of Australians with disability. Using an innovative multimodal research programme the project leverages participatory media to gain new user centred insights. The project will also offer insights regarding newer forms of television through a usability analysis of the range of web-capable devices that can be used to access TV to discover whether they are more or less enabling for people across a diverse range of disabilities. The successful applicant will be a full team member of an Australian Research Council grant that asks, 'How does digital television create a social space for people with disability, when impairment makes watching television challenging and social stigma against disability is perpetuated through representation?' Possible areas of research include: * Television's transition to the internet and the implications for people with disability * Television accessibility * The representation of disability on contemporary forms of television such as online streaming platforms * The representation of disability (and audience response to it) on contemporary drama such as Game of Thrones * The intersections between television representation and online discussion * Employment of people with disabilities in television industries The successful applicant will work with Dr Katie Ellis. The migrant populations keep some of their original cultures with them that influence their communication about health outcomes. Meanwhile, migrant populations are constantly exposed to and adopting cultural values and practices in their host countries or regions, which gradually alter their health related communication and behaviors. On the one hand, migrants' health communication and behaviors have become an important social topic in many countries especially in North America and some European countries with a relatively long history of having immigrants from other countries. On the other hand, in countries like China, urbanization accelerates migration within the country, primarily with economically and socially disadvantaged population migrating from rural to urban areas. Both international and internal migration bring new challenges to public health systems. Our edited book aims to critically review theoretical frameworks and literature, as well as discuss new practices and lessons related to culture, migration, and health communication in different countries. Scope and Recommended Topics: We invite chapters that critically review the strengths and limitations of widely applied theoretical frameworks such as assimilation, acculturation, cultural adaptation, culture-centered approach, cultural safety, cultural competency, and intercultural sensitivity. The review of those theoretical frameworks should be embedded in public health and health communication contexts. Taking a communication perspective, this edited book will examine how differences among different cultural communities relate to health communication at interpersonal, group, and societal levels. We are interested but not limited to chapters on the following topics: * Health communication disparities among immigrant groups * Health information diffusion among migrant groups * Social support and migrant groups' health communication This edited book will also discuss how content and format of media in combination with other social factors such as social capital and social networks influence individuals' health beliefs and behaviors. For instance, we are interested in receiving book chapters on the following topics: * Comprehensive literature on media effects on migrants' health behaviors * Media coverage and public discourse on migrants' health * Media campaigns and migrant population Health communication is always situated in certain social, political, historical, and cultural contexts. This book addresses a few important contextual factors that practitioners and researchers need to be aware of in research, practice, and policy making. As such we also solicit stimulating health communication cases on immigrants' health to be included with in-depth analysis of their unique contexts. Target Audience: The target audience for this book will consist of upper-level undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty members and practitioners in both communication studies and health sciences, as well as their respective allied fields such as media studies, telecommunications, journalism, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, medical science, nursing, public health, psychology/psychiatry, and medical informatics. In addition to speaking to an academic audience, authors are encouraged to write so as to provide valuable information and resources to practitioners, administrators, and policy makers working in the health sector. Submission Guidelines: Chapter proposals should include the following components: 1. A title page with contact information for all authors; 2. A 750-1200 word (including references), single-spaced extended abstract clearly explaining: * The purpose and the contents of the proposed chapter; and * How the proposed chapter relates to the overall objectives of the book; 3. A working bibliography - a list of potential resources for your chapter done in APA style (6th edition); and, 4. A brief biographical statement (maximum 200 words) written in the third person containing the following information: * Current position and affiliation; * Highest degree held, field, and institution granting that degree; and, * Current area of research and/or current research project.
