Hello, I am a Master's student in sociology at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. I am currently working on research involving a Facebook group as a sort of virtual ethnography. I was wondering if anyone knew of any researchers who work with archiving Facebook group discussions. I am looking for a way to better facilitate the archiving of my data, as I planned on creating a corpus based on 6 months of discussions within the Facebook group. The 22nd edition of the conference will be held in Limassol, Cyprus. Limassol (or Lemesos) is a multicultural bustling town, flanked by two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion, and guarded by the Amathusian Aphrodite and Appolo Hylates. It is a town of great visual diversity and contrast from spectacular seafront views, historic places like the mediaeval Castle, and Byzantine churches. Along the 17 km long sandy beaches, two Marinas, world renowned 5 star hotels, and a most exciting dining, shopping, nightlife and yachting scene create a year-round vibrant lifestyle well beyond the expectations of a Mediterranean island. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. Why you should submit to ACM IUI: At ACM IUI, we focus on the interaction between machine intelligence and human intelligence. While other conferences focus on one side or the other, we address the complex interaction between the two. We welcome research that explores how to make the interaction between computers and people smarter, which may leverage solutions from data mining, knowledge representation, novel interaction paradigms, and emerging technologies. We strongly encourage submissions that discuss research from both HCI and AI simultaneously, but also welcome works that focus more on one side or the other. Second call for papers Ting: Making publics through provocation, conflict and appropriation A workshop at The Participatory Design Conference (PDC) in Aarhus 2016, August 15. http://www.performingthecommon.se/ting/ <http://www.performingthecommon.se/ting/> Because of the importance of the role and embodiment of the designer/artist in making publics, this workshop calls attention to self-reflective practices in participatory design, and questions how these self-reflective practices can be embedded in the functionality of new publics and design practices. More specifically, the workshop aims to explore the following questions: How do the designer/artist create and maintain publics? How do we accommodate differences in these agonistic spaces? What is the role of the designer/artist in these contexts? How can we understand the tension between artistic control in speculative design and empowerment in participatory design? We invite researchers, designers, activists, artists, who in their work are exploring utopian, speculative, and critical design projects as well as designing for and with social movements, alternative societies and relational economies. The specific themes and topics we are interested to revisit and discuss in this workshop are: • Agonistic public spaces versus consensual decision-making • Role of the author/designer/creator/artist in speculative and critical design in relation to participatory design • Exclusion and inclusion in the design practice • Norms in speculative participatory design practices • Institutional conditions for the development and growth of speculative and critical design within a participatory design practice Workshop Participation and Key Dates Participants will be selected to participate in the workshop based on their submitted position-papers. Dear all, We are very pleased to announce that the international Computers, Privacy & Data Protection conference is returning with the 10th edition and seeking for cutting edge panel proposals. This call for panels is aimed at academic consortia, research projects, think tanks and other research organisations. Hi all, I am a newbie member of the list, doing my PhD at Brunel University in the UK. I am looking at how academic expert authority is challenged when experts or expert institutions (like universities or learned societies) try to engage with the wider public online to either educate, explain or "correct" public perception of a given topic. Can anyone recommend papers that deal with Facebook in that context of academics engaging with the public, and looking at what features of Facebook might determine the success or failure of such engagement? That would be much appreciated! I am trying to plug any gaps I might have with respect to recent papers in this area I may have missed. I will be happy to collate all the responses and re-publish them together in case anyone else will find it useful. This movement is characterised by the heterogeneity of its activities, from meme-crafting to pranks to activist actions, with a wide range of goals and tactics. Such heterogeneity raises the question as to why such a diverse group of people makes the decision to act under the same name. To answer this question, the concept of collective identity is applied, which describes how participants collectively construct the definition of their group. This dissertation is based on a three-year ethnography. The main findings show that the collective identity of Anonymous rests on five sets of self-defining concepts related to: 1) Anonymous’ counterculture of offense and parrhesia, 2) its personification into two personae (the ‘trickster’ and the ‘hero’) that have differing goals, means, and relationships with the environment, 3) a horizontal organisation and a democratic decision-making process, 4) practices of anonymity and an ethics of self-effacement, and 5) its self-definition as a universal entity, inclusive, and unbounded. The collective identity construction process is marked by tensions due to the incompatibility of some of these concepts, but also due to differences between these collective identity definitions and actual practices. As a consequence, they have to be constantly reaffirmed through social actions and discourses. Not all individuals who reclaim themselves as Anonymous recognise the totality of these collective identity definitions, but they all accept a number of them that are sufficient to legitimate their own belonging to the movement, and most of the time to be recognised by others as such. The different groups constituting Anonymous are therefore symbolically linked through a web of collective identity definitions rather than an encompassing and unified collective identity. This ‘connective identity’ gives the movement a heterogeneous composition while at the same time permitting it to retain a sense of identity that explains the use of a collective name.
