Why do whole communities choose to go without the internet when the infrastructure for access is in place? Through an in-depth exploration of the digital practices occurring in Aboriginal households in remote central Australia, the authors address both the dynamics of internet adoption and the benefits that flow from its use. The book challenges us to think beyond the standard explanations for the digital divide, arguing that digital exclusion is not just another symptom of social exclusion. At its heart, Internet on the Outstation is a compelling examination of equality and difference in the digital age, asking: Can internet access help resolve the disadvantages associated with remote living? Internet on the Outstation is the result of a multi-year research collaboration, which included a trial of internet infrastructure, training and maintenance in three small Aboriginal communities (known as outstations). During the research phase, Ellie Rennie, Eleanor Hogan and Julian Thomas were based at the Swinburne Institute for Social Research in Melbourne. Robin Gregory and Andrew Crouch worked at the Centre for Appropriate Technology, an Indigenous-owned research and training organization in Alice Springs. Alyson Wright worked for the Central Land Council, the representative body for traditional owners of the central Australia region. Anyone studying Ingress or whole game play histories?

Interestingly Eve Online saves all one's 'in game' messages and chat logs to simple text files on the gamer's C drive on their PC. I saved all these files over multiple PC's I have played the game on. I have almost my whole game history in small text files. A toy big data problem as there are at least 500,000 files now. Ingress a GPS cell phone exercise game sends e-mail/gmail notifications when one's landmarks are attacked by the other team. I have 5,000 e-mails after a few months playing. I have successfully compiled and parsed these files, the Eve game logs and the Ingress gmail notifications which can be a form of record of my entire game play. I can look at my first days in Eve and the huge risks I took in game play not knowing these were risks. Risk is a nice topic in gaming because of gambling studies and the policy desire to help compulsive gamblers. Anyone else analyzing whole game playing histories as data? Would you have thoughts on tracing out behaviour in game playing log files? His talk, “Killing the Hyperlink, Killing the Web: the Shift from Library-Internet to Television-Internet,” will reflect his views on the Internet today. * Dr. Lada Adamic leads the Product Science group within Facebook's Data Science Team. She is also an adjunct associate professor at the University of Michigan's School of Information and Center for the Study of Complex Systems. Her talk “The Life and Times of Information in Networks” centers on information dynamics in networks: how information diffuses, how it can be found, and how it influences the evolution of a network's structure. * Prof. Sandra Carberry is a well known researcher in the areas of computational linguistics, dialogue systems, and explanation generation, and one of the founders of the User Modeling research area at the first workshop in Maria Laach in 1986. As appropriate for the 30th anniversary, her talk “User Modeling: The Past, The Present and The Future” discusses how the field evolved, insights into where the field is headed, and the hottest topics for exploration. The conference includes a doctoral consortium that provides an opportunity for doctoral students to explore and develop their research interests under the guidance of a panel of distinguished scholars. This track received 18 submissions of which nine were accepted as full papers and eight as posters. This is the final call for submission to the Values, Power, and Politics in Digital Infrastructures mini track within the Studying Social Media and Digital Infrastructures workshop-within-a-conference to be held at the 50th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-50). For fifty years, the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) has been a home for researchers in the information, computer, and system sciences (http://www.hicss.org/) The 50th anniversary event will be held January 4-7, 2017, at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. With an eye to the exponential growth of digitalization and information networks in all aspects of human activity, HICSS has continued to expand its track on Digital and Social Media (http://www.hicss.org/#!track3/c1xcj) This year, among the Digital and Social Media track’s numerous offerings, we offer two minitracks meant to work in concert. Designed to sequence together into a single day-long workshop-within-a-conference, they will host the best emerging scholarship from sociology, anthropology, communication, information studies, and science & technology studies that addresses the most pressing concerns around digital and social media. In addition, we have developed a pre-conference workshop on digital research methods that will inform and complement the work presented in these minitracks. Minitrack 1: Critical and Ethical Studies of Digital and Social Media http://www.hicss.org/#!critical-ethical-studies-of-dsm/c24u6 Organizers: Tarleton Gillespie, Mary Gray, and Robert Mason The minitrack will critically interrogate the role of DSM in supporting existing power structures or realigning power for underrepresented or social marginalized groups, and raise awareness or illustrate the ethical issues associated with doing research on DSM. Conceptual papers would address foundational theories of critical studies of media or ethical conduct in periods of rapid sociotechnical change—e.g., new ways of thinking about information exchange in communities and societies. Empirical papers would draw on studies of social media data that illustrate the critical or ethical dimensions of the use of such data. By considering how infrastructures – the underlying material properties, policy decisions, and mechanisms of interoperability that support digital platforms – are designed, maintained, and dismantled, the work presented in this mini-track will contribute to debates about sociotechnical aspects of digital and social media, with a focus on data, knowledge production, and information access. This session will focus on research that employs techniques such as infrastructural inversion, trace ethnography or design research (among other methods) to explore factors that influence the development of infrastructures and their use in practice. Academic researchers and practitioners have deployed traditional techniques, from ethnography to social network analysis; but digital and social media challenge and even defy these techniques in a number of ways that must be examined. At the same time, digital and social media may benefit from more organic and unorthodox methods that get at aspects that cannot be examined otherwise. This intensive half day workshop will focus on approaches and best practices for studying digital and social media. We aim to go beyond the application of existing methods into online environments and collect innovative methods that break new ground while producing rigorous insights. This workshop will draw on invited and other participants’ research, teaching, classroom, and business experiences to think through “mixed methods” for qualitative and quantitative studies of digital and social media systems. Through a series of roundtables and guided discussions, the workshop will focus on best practices for studying digital and social media. As part of these discussions, we also will highlight technical and ethical challenges that arise from our studying cross-platform, digital and social media phenomenon. The output of this workshop will be an open, “co-authored” syllabus for a seminar offering what we might call a mixed-method, “from causal to complicated” approach to digital and social media research, applicable to both researchers and practitioners alike.
