Ten years ago: The lonelygirl15 scandal

Dear colleagues, today ten years ago, the *LA Times <http://articles.latimes.com/2006/sep/08/entertainment/et-lonelygirl8> *reported that an Email sent from the lonelygirl15 YouTube account had been tracked back to the Creative Artists Agency. A couple of days later, three men in their twenties stepped forth and revealed that they were running the lonelygirl15 and Danielbeast channels and producing the videos. Bree (lonelygirl15) and Daniel were not teenagers vlogging their lives but fictional characters played by two obscure actors. Fans were divided about what to make of the news; some of them were seriously disappointed. In my open access e-book *Poetics of Early YouTube: Production, Performance, Success* <http://hss.ulb.uni-bonn.de/2016/4407/4407.pdf> I deal - among other things - with modes of performance in early YouTube culture. I show that video blogging was not a practice of confessional self performances which was corrupted by the insincerity of 'fakes' like lonelygirl15 but a practice in which different modes of performance were creatively employed from the very beginning. As AoIR continues to grow, we realized a dedicated AoIR Conference Coordinator would help immensely with conference organization and management. AoIR is very happy to announce the hiring of Dr. Michael Haley to fill this role for the #AoIR2017 Tartu Conference. Michael Haley (Ph.D., Alliant University, 1979) was recently Executive Director of the International Communication Association. As Executive Director of ICA, his primary foci was on increasing the visibility and international scope of the organization, increasing participation of the organization with related organizations and governmental agencies, increasing granting and funding opportunities for the membership of the International Communication Association, and advancing technology within the association. He has also served as Executive Director of both the California Psychological Association and the California Psychological Association Foundation. Michael has a twenty five year history of involvement in public policy debates and initiatives at both national and international levels. He has taught in university settings at is co-author of public policy research articles. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and is a Certified Association Executive. Reading list on (media) politics of visibility/invisibility

Dear all, I felt like starting another list of literature :) Here is the question/thesis at stake: We live in a hyper-mediated world, in which the *speed and sheer amount of media posts *(Facebook, your favorite newspapers, Twitter, blogs, you name it...) suggest that political impact, relevance and importance is connected to "being visible" or "making something visible". Vice versa, *if something is **not visible**in today's social-media-democracy it does not exist, thus has no meaning, thus has no political power/impact/relevance**.* Yet, I feel - and so far it's only really a feeling - that *these invisible spaces and actions enable, generate and allocate as much political power as their visible twins.* Against the backdrop of "social-media-everywhere" and the *dominant daily narrative of the visible* (which we all experience when we look at our smartphone), I'm now looking for *authors and concepts that explore/reflect/challenge/* - that either the *politics of the visible* - or the *politics of the invisible* - or even the *relationship between visibility and invisibility* with regards to political power. It might be *authors and concepts that already reflect on today's (hyper) social media worlds**, as well as "classical" approaches on visibility/invisibility of power.* To give you two examples: Thinking about today's social media, we could have a closer look at the power of images (e.g. a meme) on our interfaces (visible) or at the algorithmic structures that sort and "deliver" these images (invisible). Both layers of power are real, in the sense that they affect us in our daily live, but one is visible and one is invisible. And of course, they are certainly connected. Same goes for something that existed before social media, let's say party politics. There have always been official press releases and interviews about how well e.g. a party congress went and what wonderful values this party now stands for (transparency, inclusion, etc.), but at the same time, at the congress in question, there also existed back-room meetings and private phone calls to influence internal party currents (opacity, exclusion, etc.). Again, both spaces and actions are real, in the sense that they have power effects on the party's members and/or possible voters, but one (media) space is visible and the other one invisible. And, here too, both layers work together perfectly. Hi everyone, I’m looking for data about Facebook usage by day of week. My Google-driven trawling has found almost exclusively tips for marketers saying that 2pm and Wednesdays are good for posting commercial content. Perhaps someone here can point me towards something a bit more substantial? I’m interested in any kind of data that show use per day of the week - Likes, friendships made, log ins, anything really. I’d like to establish if there are days of the week that are busier than others in terms of different types of Facebook use. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Communication or a closely related discipline (outstanding ABDs considered), a productive research program, and excellent teaching credentials. The Department seeks a broadly trained communication scholar with expertise in critical, theoretical, and historical approaches to media. 2016 Best Dissertation Award - Dr. Eden Litt

The Best Dissertation Award for 2016 goes to* Dr. Eden Litt* for her dissertation, “The Imagined Audience: How People Think About Their Audience and Privacy on Social Network Sites.” She filed it June 2015 at Northwestern University, under the direction of Prof. Eszter Hargittai. Dr. Litt investigates the imagined audiences to whom social media users share their latest updates – whom do they imagine as the audience? What shapes these imagined audiences? Do these imaginings fluctuate each time they post? And do these imaginings relate to other factors, such as what people reveal or conceal? Her research design was creative and ambitious, and she managed to draw from a diverse sample of participants and a range of social network sites to make her claims. Litt’s rigorous study supports important findings, which ultimately sketch an agenda for future research in Internet studies focused on better understanding the intentions and assumptions of social media users in their day-to-day online practices. A readable and well-organized manuscript, Litt’s dissertation is a shining example of excellence in the field today. The committee also offers an honorable mention to Dr. Anne Helmond. Her dissertation was titled “The Web as Platform: Data Flows in Social Media,” and she filed it September 2015 at the University of Amsterdam, under the direction of Prof. Richard Rogers. Dr. Helmond’s dissertation is notable and stands to make a significant long-term impact in the field. AoIR is grateful for the hard work by this year’s Best Dissertation Award committee: Daren Brabham (chair), Taina Bucher, Mathias Klang, Anders Larsson, and Sun Sun Lim. Deadline for submissions: October 17, 2016 Call for Papers for Philosophy and Technology’s special issue on Ethical Risk Assessment in Biomedical Big Data GUEST EDITOR Brent Mittelstadt, Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford INTRODUCTION In biomedical research, the analysis of large datasets (Big Data) has become a major driver of innovation and success. ‘Biomedical Big Data’ (BBD) describes the complex and new set of technologically-driven phenomena focusing on analysis of aggregated datasets to improve medical knowledge, public health, clinical care and commercial health and well-being devices and services. Machine learning and algorithmic categorisation can increasingly make sense of the seemingly endless data emerging from sensors, wearable devices, clinical observations, clinical trials, social and online platforms which provide insight into the behaviours and physiology of individuals. BBD is expected to provide new ways of understanding health and well-being at the level of the individual and society, for example by predicting behaviours, monitoring diseases and outbreaks, and providing risk stratification for individual patients. Epidemiology, infectious disease research, and genomics and genetics are already deeply affected. However, the collection, storage and analysis of BBD potentially raises serious ethical problems which may threaten the huge opportunities it offers. To avoid foreseeable problems and react quickly to emergent issues, the planning and deployment of BBD must include proactive ethical risk assessment. To contribute to this critical step, this special issue of Philosophy and Technology aims to map new, under-researched but important issues, concepts and cases that should be considered in proactive ethical assessment of emerging BBD platforms and services. In 1971, at the culmination of the Vietnam War, the Chomsky-Foucault debate reminded us of this fact when a young student pointed a question towards Chomsky: "How can you, with your very courageous attitude towards the war in Vietnam, survive in an institution like MIT, which is known here as one of the great war contractors and intellectual makers of this war?" (Chomsky and Foucault 2006, 63) Chomsky responded dialectically, but also had to admit that the academic institution he is working for is a major organisation of war research and thereby strengthens the political contradictions and inequalities in capitalist societies. Edward P. Thompson, one of the central figures in the early years of British cultural studies, edited the book "Warwick University Ltd" in 1970. Thompson was working at the University of Warwick then and published together with colleagues and students a manuscript that discovered, as the title suggests, the close relationship of their university with industry and industrial capitalism. The book also revealed some evidence of secret political surveillance of staff and students by the university uncovered by students occupying the Registry at Warwick at that time. The relationship between state control and global capitalism has intensified in the last decades. With the collapse of the welfare state and the drop of public funds, universities are positioning themselves as active agents of global capital, transforming urban spaces into venues for capital accumulation and competing for international student populations for profit. In this environment, students have to pay significant amounts of tuition for precarious futures. Similarly, teaching and research faculties across the globe have to negotiate their roles that are often strictly defined in an entrepreneurial manner. Increasingly, the value of academic labour is measured in capitalist terms and therefore subject to new forms of control, surveillance and productivity measures. As the recent cases of Steven Salaita (USA), Academics for Peace (Turkey) and the crackdown against students in India reveal, academic labour and academics in general are also facing immense challenges in terms of state control and freedom of speech. Situated in this economic and political context, the overall task of this special issue of /tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique/ is to gather critical contributions examining universities, academic labour, digital media and capitalism. We are thus particularly interested in articles focusing on (1) the context, history and theoretical concepts underlying academic labour, (2) the relationship between academic work and digital media/new information and communication technologies/the Internet/social media and (3) the political potentials and challenges within higher education. We call this area “player-computer interaction”. The goal of the conference is to highlight and foster discussion of current high quality research in games and HCI as foundations for the future of digital play. To this end, the conference will feature streams that blend academic research and games with research papers, interactive demos, and industry case studies.
