The 22nd edition of the conference will be held in Limassol, Cyprus. Limassol (or Lemesos) is a multicultural bustling town, flanked by two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion, and guarded by the Amathusian Aphrodite and Appolo Hylates. It is a town of great visual diversity and contrast from spectacular seafront views, historic places like the mediaeval Castle, and Byzantine churches. Along the 17 km long sandy beaches, two Marinas, world renowned 5 star hotels, and a most exciting dining, shopping, nightlife and yachting scene create a year-round vibrant lifestyle well beyond the expectations of a Mediterranean island. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. IUI 2017 is pleased to invite tutorial proposals. Tutorials offer the community an opportunity to learn about the state-of-the-art concepts and techniques and allow the presenters to share their expertise. We invite proposals from active researchers and experienced presenters. Ideally, a tutorial will cover the state-of-the-art research and development in a specific area strongly related to IUI. Tutorials on interdisciplinary areas, novel or fast growing directions, and significant practical applications are also encouraged. Each accepted tutorial will receive one free IUI 2017 registration. Submission Guidelines The proposals should be PDF documents not exceeding 3 pages, submitted by e-mail to the tutorial chairs at: tutorial2017(a)iui.acm.org. We encourage prospective presenters to contact the tutorial chairs in advance and discuss their tutorial ideas. Each tutorial proposal should provide the following information: · Name and title: Your name, the tutorial title and the expected length of your tutorial (up to half a day). · Description of tutorial topic and goal: Detailed outline of the tutorial, along with descriptions of the objectives, its relevance to IUI, benefits to the attendees, and course materials/handouts (links to online materials encouraged). · Organizers: Name, email address, and affiliation of each presenter. Note that each listed presenter must register for the conference and be present at the tutorial. · Target audience and prerequisites: Target audience level (introductory, intermediate, advanced) and prerequisite knowledge or skills. · Experience: Tutors' short bios and their expertise related to the tutorial, including history of previously given tutorials. · Equipment and software requirement: please list any that will be needed. For your interest, and for resharing - this is a wide-ranging call, and suits people working in internet and game studies, or within the field of digital society or culture studies, for example. - Frans Mäyrä Call for applications: Five tenure-track posts of professor/associate professor in the New Social Research (NSR) programme for the fixed term of five years The University of Tampere is a lively research environment with a staff of 2.200 and 15.000 students and with a strong emphasis on the study of topical societal phenomena. The University of Tampere has established a multidisciplinary New Social Research (NSR) programme in order to strengthen its profile in social research. The NSR programme concentrates on the following themes: 1. governing complexity 2. transformation of agency and empowerment 3. changing work 4. future of well-being 5. new forms of communication, information and interaction Research on these themes is carried out across disciplinary and faculty boundaries, and in cooperation with decision-makers and research participants both nationally and internationally. More information on the NSR is available at the programme website. The New Social Research (NSR) programme is announcing the vacancy of five tenure track professors/associate professors for the fixed term of five years as of 1 December 2016 or as agreed. Another five positions for NSR will be opened in early 2017. The tasks of the professor/associate professor (tenure track) include, among other things, the following: - conduct research in alignment with the New Social Research (NSR) programme - the development of the programme’s research profile in cooperation with the other scholars - active seeking of external research funding - cooperation with the University’s faculties, researchers at the Institute for Advanced Social Research (IASR), and other partners - participation in national and international research groups and networks In addition, the professor’s/associate professor’s tasks in the University’s faculties include, for example: - instruction, supervision of master’s theses and doctoral dissertations - developing research and teaching in the faculty - participation in the faculty’s working groups Qualification requirements for the post of professor/associate professor (tenure track) A person appointed to the post of a professor/associate professor is expected to have earned his/her doctoral degree in a field relevant to the research programme and to have high-level scientific expertise, a proven track record of international scientific cooperation, and the ability to offer advanced research-based instruction and supervision. When the merits of the applicant are assessed, the following aspects will also be taken into account: - the alignment of the applicant’s research with one or more themes in the NSR programme - the suitability of the applicant’s research proposal in view of the NSR themes and the multidisciplinary research environment - experience in leading a research group - a history of successful applications for external research funding - merits related to education on the doctoral level - studies in university pedagogy or other pedagogical merits and experience in teaching The basis for salary and the preliminary job requirement level The salary is based on the job requirement level chart for teaching and research personnel in the University Salary System. In addition to the requirement level component, the successful applicant will be paid a personal work performance component. At the start of employment, the monthly salary of an associate professor will range between EUR 5.000 – 5.600 and that of a professor between EUR 5.700 – 6.400. The trial period and the tenure track There will be a trial period of four months in the posts. The positions will be filled as tenure track posts. Applicants must indicate whether they apply on the associate professor’s or professor’s level. The steering group will make decisions on starting the external evaluation process of the appointed candidates at least one year before the end of the fixed term. Lesbians in Facebook & construction of sexual desire

Hi everyone, I’m doing a research about the interaction and presence of lesbians in facebook, and their construction of sexual desire. I’m based in a facebook’s page called “Bollo Informer” where lesbians write anonymous missages to the anonymous admin and that admin then publish the missage. The page is full of girls asking for meetings with other girls and they usually describe the type of girl they like/desire. My idea is study that construction of the desire – anonymous and virtual – in terms of antropology. But I didn’t find any background study. Does somebody have any idea or author or something? Searching for a workshop conductor on "ethnographic portrait writing"

Dear all, Apologies for the cross-posting. Please don't answer to the list, but send me a private message to not spam this wonderful information network! Here is what I'm looking for (feel free to forward this information): The "Institut für Volkskunde/Europäische Ethnologie" at the LMU Munich is looking for a *conductor of a workshop on "ethnographic portrait writing"*. Our international PhD programme <www.en.transformationsprozesse.volkskunde.uni-muenchen.de> will have its Autumn school in Munich (Germany) from 5.-8. October 2016. Our PhD students (all have a background in cultural and/or social anthropology) want to learn *how to write a "good" portrait within an ethnographic text* *(dissertation, paper, etc.) **using the various types of infomation they have gathered/created during fieldwork (notes, interviews, etc)*. The workshop should address*two sets of skills*: * * *1. Creative "good" writing* *techniques* (describe a person vividly, etc.). *2.* Answering the question(s) of *"what might a portrait of a person stand for analytically in an ethnographic text"* resp. *"how can we connect a portrait with an analytical and/or theoretical layer"* (concepts, theory, etc.). The workshop itself will have to be *held Friday, 7th October (9am-12m)*. It would be great to have a *native speaker* or someone with an*excellent level of English*, since this will be the workshop language. The time for the workshop itself will be rather short. This is why we invite*workshop concepts that ask the students to prepare some material **beforehand* (e.g. parts of their conducted interview, field notes, etc.)*and then work with it during**the workshop*. We will be able to *cover the travel/accommodation costs as well as a honorarium* *(within Europe)*. Maybe it might also be possible to cover the stay for the whole conference (if interested), but this depends on honorarium negotiations.
