Wednesday's event is the first time we've done a live inter-city meetup. Should be interesting! We still have plenty of seats available at the NYC node, so please join us. GrubHub is across the street from Bryant Park and, as you might imagine, there will be food and drink! *RSVP* A little background on the event. The idea for this came in the run up to last years *USA-IGF* <https://www.igf-usa.org/>. We already had a session on free speech issues thus it got bumped. What it really was about how what we see on the Internet is shaped, the public interest in that, and the role of governance. Since then we've been overtaken by events - not just fake news, but a general awareness of the bubble effect. The are many facets to this, and it looks like it will merit a series. Secondly, the format. We all know how remote participants are second-class participants in meetups.. He talked about the company's policy of "*One remote? All remote!*". If any one person attends a meeting remotely, they all go back to their desks and webcams. CALL FOR PAPERS (apologies for multiple copies) *3rd IEEE International Workshop on Internet of Things for Active and Assisted Living (IoTAAL)* In conjunction with IEEE Global IoT Summit 2017, Geneva, Switzerland - 6-9 June 2017. http://www.tlc.dii.univpm.it/iotaalms/iotaal2017/ *MOTIVATION AND SCOPE* Increased life expectancy and decreased birth rates are challenging developed countries worldwide, with a rapidly growing elderly population, and a declining workforce. These two contextual phenomena are generating new needs, as ageing increases the probability of developing physical and cognitive impairments, requiring new and more effective ways to provide support and care. According to the United Nations, the elderly, defined as people over the age of 60, will make up 37% of the European population by 2050, from 20% in 2000: this will put a dramatic pressure on public welfare systems, and new ways of assistance and care delivery have to be designed. The Internet of Things may provide significant enhancement to the quality of life for the elderly and, in general, people in need, bringing new algorithms, architectures and platforms into Active and Assisted Living (AAL), to develop new and innovative approaches. A peculiar aspect of IoT relies in enabling the collection of massive amounts of data, generated from physical and virtual sensors, things, smart objects and users. As such, IoT is totally functional to AAL, with the pervasive collection of environmental and personal data related to the monitored subject, and their processing, aimed at generating information to be used in different types of applications, from behavioral analysis, to gesture and action recognition, to fall prevention and detection, to human-machine interaction, just to mention a few. *TOPICS OF INTEREST* This workshop aims at investigating the close relationship between IoT and AAL, in a data-oriented perspective, and at different layers: from the technologies enabling sensor data collection, to the communication architectures needed to support data transfer, to the reasoning techniques applied to data, in order to generate the information upon which AAL services and functionalities are built. This position would reside within the Communication Training Center (CTC) of the College of Media & Communication, and the successful candidate will offer regular workshops for doctoral students and faculty for improving graphic design, data visualizations, videos, photos, etc. in grant proposals and major publication manuscripts. This position would also offer consulting services for select major proposals and publication manuscripts as designated by the Vice President for Research. The successful candidate will also teach two courses per long academic semester, with additional opportunities for summer teaching, within the College of Media & Communication. She or he will have a proven track record of professional accomplishment and substantial teaching experience in graphic design and at least one of the following areas: photography, videography, digital media post-production, interactive media, and/or web design. The students will be reimbursed for their expenses after the conference. After the conference, students write a short report (1 page) for the national AI magazine. Students must be member of the German AI society before submitting the reimbursement forms. The NSF Travelling Grant (Only for US students) We are happy to announce that student participation support provided by NSF to attend the IUI Conference will be provided (limited to US students). This support is in the form of a small stipend to cover the registration fee and partially cover the costs of travel and living expenses while attending the conference. Today, developments such as let's plays, eSports, and streaming have made spectating play an important mode of engaging with digital games. Historically, sporting arenas have brought together not only skillful athletes, but huge crowds of spectators. The audience has an effect on the play, from the cheering of the fans of the home team, to rule changes implemented in sports in order to make them more television friendly. The spectator experience places different design considerations on a game than that of the player experience. Spectating Play is the 13th annual spring seminar organized by University of Tampere Game Research Lab. The seminar welcomes any and all scholarly work on the intersection of audiences and game/play. This paradigm could broaden and amplify creative capacity for all, but is today mostly developed and studied in game AI. This one-day workshop at CHI 2017 therefore convenes CHI and game researchers to advance mixed-initiative approaches to creativity support. *Data Scientist* Grade 7: Salary £31,076 – £38,183 p.a. The Oxford Internet Institute is a leading centre for research into individual, collective and institutional behaviour on the Internet. We are looking for a full-time Researcher to work with Professor Mark Graham <https://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/mark-graham/>and Dr Joss Wright <https://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/joss-wright/>on a new project on ‘The Economic Geography of the Darknet’. Relatively little is known about the geography of the global darknet trade. Although the strong anonymity on darknet markets prohibits any data collection about the geography of consumption of things like drugs and weapons, there is a large amount of data available about the sale of such goods and services. This project seeks to employ techniques from computational social science and digital geography in order to achieve two primary objectives. First, we seek to use scrape relevant geographic information out datasets of darknet sales: building some re-usable data at the country level (e.g. ‘the number of heroin sellers based in every country’, ‘the total number of vendors selling weapons in every country’ etc.). Second, we seek to map, visualise, and analyse those data: using multiple variables (the various categories of products and services) to ask ‘what is the geography of illicit products and services?’ We hope to further ask ‘does the online trade of illicit goods and services have a significantly different geography from conventional mappings of that trade?’ In other words, can data from the darknet be used as a proxy for more traditional (and much harder to collect) data about illegal economic activities? The position is suited to candidates who have recently completed a doctorate in computer science, GIS, economics, sociology or other relevant discipline (i.e. postdocs), but we also welcome applications from qualified individuals without a doctorate (e.g. candidates with industry experience). Programming skills, and experience with GIS are required. Based at the Oxford Internet Institute, this position is available immediately for 12 months (as a part-time role) or 7 months (as a full-time role) in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal thereafter, funding permitting. Data are also generated by and flow through applications, software, platforms, and infrastructures that reshape how we play, work, eat, socialise, see ourselves, and know the world. In an era of data power, data have become agentic, especially when input into black-boxed algorithms and systems whose outputs are used to profile and sort us, influence the political economy, and for purposes for which no consent was given. Is this a 'fait accompli'? To answer this question, the Data Power 2017 conference asks: How can we reclaim some form of data-based power and autonomy, and advance data-based technological citizenship, while living in regimes of data power? Is it possible to regain agency and mobilize data for the common good? To do so, which theories help to interrogate and make sense of the operations of data power? What kind of design frameworks are needed to build and deploy data-based technologies with values and ethics that are equitable and fair? How can big data be mobilized to improve how we live, beyond notions of efficiency and innovation?
