ICCCI 2017 is the 9th edition of the conference organized by the University of Cyprus and Wroclaw University of Science and Technology in Poland, in cooperation with the IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Computational Collective Intelligence. They intend to provide researchers in focused areas the opportunity to present and discuss their work, as well as to offer a forum for interaction among a broader community of researchers. A Special Session or Workshop will consist of a group of papers in a sub-discipline of Computational Collective Intelligence related to the main topics of ICCCI 2017. The papers will be required to meet the same standards as ICCCI 2017 papers and will be published in the conference proceedings, in a bound volume by Springer in their Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence series. All the Special Sessions and Workshops will be centralized as tracks in the same conference submission and reviewing system (EasyChair) as the regular papers. Techno-Jobs and Capital* Organizers: Winifred Poster, Washington University (wrposter(a)gmail.com) Norma Möllers, Queen’s University (norma.mollers(a)queensu.ca) STS has a long tradition of inquiring about techno-work and providing foundations for studies of locality, partiality, contingency, and agency. Less attention is paid to the connections of techno-jobs to the systems of political economy in which they are embedded. The goal of this track is to encourage explicit discussion of the ways these new jobs are shaped by and sustain capital, and how they relate to broader shifts in the organization of labor and workers. We emphasize how this applies to both elite and subordinate types of techno-labor. It includes high-status jobs like the entrepreneurs and evangelists who market and distribute technical products for firms and nations, software coders who are bound by corporate non-compete contracts, techno-venture firms that are scrutinized for under-employing women, high-tech developers that rely on immigrant labor and the ‘body shopping’ practices of intermediary contracting firms, etc. It also includes a growing sector of middle and low status workers like the data janitors who clean up the internet, senior citizen ‘workampers’ who travel in their RV’s to labor at Amazon.com warehouses, manual workers who dispose of our phones and laptops, etc. We welcome papers that engage issues such as: transnational and post-colonial labor dynamics; techno-venture capitalists; R&D labor; crowdsourcing and micro-labor; outsourcing; sharing economies; creative, media, and game labor; automation; bot labor; algorithmic controls of labor; consumer labor; maintenance, repair, and care; labors of techno-waste and breakdown; racialized, gender, queer, and (dis)abled inequalities of technical labor; and digital strategies within the labor movement.

Muschert (Miami University, USA) Motivation and Scope: We live in an era of digitally-mediated relationships. From finding a spouse online to daily interactions facilitated through social media, it is difficult for many people to imagine building and sustaining both platonic and romantic relationships without technology. Virtual worlds are no strangers to these interactions. Virtual world inhabitants will often initially use the space to develop alternative self-portraits (e.g. Black, Ferdig, DiPietro, Liu, & Whalen, 2009 <http://jvwresearch.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=de4fa2a435382cb1fa67cb…>). They then create and maintain relationships with those avatars and other human players out-of-world, with other human players in-world, and with non-player-characters in-world (Ferdig & Pytash, 2012 <http://jvwresearch.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=de4fa2a435382cb1fa67cb…>). This can lead to even more complex relationships as they balance their lives and relationships in-world and out-of-world. This special issue of Journal of Virtual Worlds Research is dedicated to an exploration of such topics in a collection of articles exploring “real virtual relationships” *to be published in Q2 (2017)*. The issue editors welcome empirical and theoretical research from all fields interested in this innovative area including, but not limited to: education, psychology, sociology, digital media studies, computer science, public health, game studies, literature, counseling, religion, family studies, and business. Hi everyone, "In 2009 Stanford Persuasive Technology Lab partnered with Facebook, IMVU and other technology companies to launch Peace Dot, the first technology based initiative to measure peace on the internet.” (Link <https://peaceinnovation.stanford.edu/projects/peacedot/peace-facebook-com-c…>) They produced a page, peace.facebook.com <http://peace.facebook.com/>, which showed the number of Facebook ties made across the lines of national and religious conflicts, and showed the results of an ongoing survey into Facebook users’ belief in the chances of world peace. Deadline for submissions: February 24, 2017 Call for Papers for Philosophy and Technology's special issue on Ethics of Biomedical Data Analytics GUEST EDITOR Brent Mittelstadt, Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford INTRODUCTION In biomedical research, the analysis of large datasets (Big Data) has become a major driver of innovation and success. Data analytics provides huge opportunities to improve private and public life, especially in the health sector (biomedical data analytics, henceforth BDA). Machine learning and algorithmic categorisation can increasingly make sense of the seemingly endless data emerging from sensors, wearable devices, clinical observations, clinical trials, social and online platforms which provide insight into the behaviours and physiology of individuals. BDA is expected to provide new ways of understanding health and well-being at the level of the individual and society, for example by predicting behaviours, monitoring diseases and outbreaks, and providing risk stratification for individual patients. Epidemiology, infectious disease research, and genomics and genetics are already deeply affected. Such a potentially highly positive impact is coupled to significant ethical challenges. The extensive use of increasingly more data (Big Data), the growing reliance on algorithms to analyse them and to reach decisions (machine learning), as well as the gradual reduction of human oversight over many automatic processes pose pressing issues of fairness, responsibility, and respect of human rights. These issues can be addressed successfully. However, if they are overlooked, underestimated or left unresolved, they risk hindering the innovation and the progress that BDA can bring to society at large and to future generations. Furthermore, as recent events involving the NHS care.data programme show, BDA projects may face a double bottleneck: ethical mistakes or misunderstandings may lead to social rejection and/or distorted legislation and policies, which in turn may cripple the acceptance and advancement of data science. Clearly, ethical analysis should be incorporated at all stages of any BDA project and since the beginning, in order to understand impact, anticipate risks of unethical consequences, suggest early interventions to avoid or mitigate them, foster resilience, reinforce ethical goals and outcomes, and ensure that ethical best practices are developed, implemented, and appreciated. To contribute to this critical step, this special issue of Philosophy and Technology aims to map new, under-researched but important issues, concepts and cases that should inform proactive ethical assessment of emerging BDA applications and services. TOPICS We request the submission of research articles addressing topics including: * Theories and concepts critical to the ethical assessment of BDA in particular * Required modifications to informed consent in response to the scale and complexity of BDA * Alternatives to informed consent for BDA governance * Challenges introduced by the opacity and complexity of BDA methods, particularly deep learning, neural networks and similar methods * Group-level protections, harms and benefits * Ethical principles for governance of BDA platforms * Applicability of traditional medical research ethics principles to BDA * Privacy, de-identification and research subject rights to data access * Ownership of intellectual property generated from BDA * Uses of BDA for empowerment or improvement of patient experiences * Implications of data-intensive clinical experiences for the doctor-patient relationship * Implications of the crossover between personal health devices and BDA research, e.g. Apple HealthKit * Impact of the General Data Protection Regulation on both biomedical research and personal health/wellness services * Policy recommendations and requirements for poorly regulated BDA practices * Empirical studies/cases of existing Big Data practices that demonstrate critical ethical issues, concepts and solutions TIMETABLE * February 24, 2017: Deadline for paper submissions * April 28, 2017: Deadline reviews papers * May 26, 2017: Deadline revised papers * 2017: Publication of the special issue SUBMISSION DETAILS To submit a paper for this special issue, authors should go to the journal's Editorial Manager http://www.editorialmanager.com/phte/ The journal's submission guidelines and instructions for authors can be found here<http://www.springer.com/philosophy/epistemology+and+philosophy+of+science/j…>. Just following up on this to say that on March 20th, we will call for nominations for people to run for several positions on the Executive Committee: Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, 3 Open Seats, and Student Representative. The Vice President term runs for 4 years -- with 2 as VP and 2 as President. All of the other positions are a 2 year term. Self-nominations are A-OK as AoIR doesn't have a nominating committee for these positions. So, if you love AoIR, have thoughts about its future, and would like to further nurture and guide our community, please consider running.
