The project explores questions around the purpose of an academic book, and how technology can help make academic books more accessible, as well as those around modes of production and reception. How will the book evolve, in print or electronic format, in Arts & Humanities disciplines? While the project has confronted narratives that focus on the end of book through its research activities it is apparent that the term ‘book’ will remain valid even if the term becomes more fluid and open to interpretation. This special issue of Convergence seeks to bring together innovative theoretical and methodological frameworks which explore the academic book of the future in Arts and Humanities disciplines. Submission Criteria for 2017 Nancy Baym Book Award and AoIR Annual Dissertation Award

The Association of Internet Researchers has made a few changes to the submission criteria for our annual awards. Specific details on how to submit is forthcoming. *Nancy Baym Book Award * The Nancy Baym Annual Book Award <https://aoir.org/awards/nancy-baym-annual-book-award/>seeks to recognize the best work in the field of Internet Studies. In doing so, the award helps to highlight the breadth of work that is done relating to the social and cultural dimensions of networked media. The award includes a cash prize and an invitation to present the work at the annual IR conference. To be eligible for the award: 1. The book must be authored or co-authored as a monograph and must explore a single topic (edited collections are not eligible). 2. All of the book’s authors must be current members of AoIR at the time of submission (April 15, 2017). Memberships may be purchased here. <https://aoir.org/membership/> 3. The book must have been published between January 1 and December 31, 2016. Each book should be accompanied by an emailed letter of nomination. Self-nominations from AoIR members are welcome. The letter of nomination, which must be written by a current member of AoIR, should outline: - How the book contributes to AoIR’s intellectual community. - The book’s unique contributions and overall strengths. - If not a self-nomination, the letter should also include a statement that the nominated author has been contacted prior to its submission and accepts the nomination. Books submitted without a meaningful nomination letter outlining both the strengths of the book and the book’s contribution to the AoIR community to AoIR will not be eligible. *Dissertation Award * The Association of Internet Researchers Dissertation Award <https://aoir.org/awards/dissertation-award/> was established in 2012 to recognize the work of emerging scholars in the field of Internet research. [apologies for cross postings] [I'm recruiting a new PhD position - please see below, and contact me for any questions using my professional email address] *Adaptive Machine Learning for the Analysis of Dynamic Data Stream in Social Networks* The analysis of scalable data using classification methods faces the challenge of the evolution of the knowledge over time. In the study of extremely variable phenomena such as social networks, the learning data (for the supervised case) and the classification space may become obsolete as time progresses. In the case of local modifications, there are incremental learning rules (Ning, 2007) to handle the local transition from one mode to another. In the case of Social network data stream analysis one needs to design efficient algorithms for the monitoring of scalable classes generated from local or global changes in the dataset (nodes/links addition or removal). Very often in these cases, the profiles of a community can join or change community while retaining or substantially modifying their behavior (attributes). In addition, the class update stage is very dependent on the performance of the algorithm currently applied before the updating of classes. *Objective: *This thesis aims at proposing an algorithm for dynamic classification of social data (interactions and topics) which integrates an evidence accumulation approach to contain the inter-class instability. Hi Monika The IGF 2016 BPF Gender and Access did a summarization of its 2015 findings in form of an infographic http://www.intgovforum.org/multilingual/index.php?q=filedepot_download/3406… The BPF also coordinated actions w/ Brazil IGF, LAC IGF and APrIGF to build its 2016 findings. This work generated reports w/ links to the session videos and other visual materials. They are all on the BPF page http://www.intgovforum.org/multilingual/content/bpf-gender-and-access In 2017 the BPF announced a partnership w/ ITU Equals project regarding online mapping of initiatives on Gender and Access. Info is also on the page above. Although prolific w/ outcome documents and interactive comment platforms, the IGF is increasing recently the adoption of visual materials. As most of the intersessional (the year long IGF work) is very topic-specific and highly specialized, this is an interesting way to bring to a larger audience the findings of this "deep dive" work. Making the familiar strange: Studying the Syrian refugee crisis

Hi all, I wanted to share a post I wrote for Sonia Livingstone's London School of Economics/Parenting for a Digital Future blog on the unexpected ways in which the Syrian refugee crisis can manifest in any social science research right now, and the vital need to connect refugee narratives to the broader study of institutional and interpersonal relationships. Fellowships are open to both early-career and experienced researchers with a specific interest in any of the focus research areas of the Centre outlined below. The selected applicants will be expected to contribute to the Centre’s activities and research projects, including a requirement to present their research in a Faculty seminar. Dear All, Here I would like to draw your attention to the *2017 Global Data Journalism survey*, that myself and Mirko Lorenz from Deutsche Welle are running. With the rise and prevalence of the use of data and computational methods for investigative journalism and storytelling in newsrooms around the world, we believe it is time to get a good assessment about data driven journalism. This survey aims at studying the current state of data journalism in newsrooms, with the aim of providing theoretical, practical and pedagogical guidelines for the future of data journalism. If you are a journalist, investigative journalist, data journalist, computational journalist, or if you have experience working within or with newsrooms, I would encourage you to take part in this study.
