ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. The conference brings together people from academia, industry and non-profit organizations and gives its participants the opportunity to present and see cutting-edge IUI work in a focused and interactive setting. It is large enough to be diverse and lively, but small enough to allow for extensive interaction among attendees and easy attendance to the events that the conference offers, ranging from oral paper presentations, poster sessions, workshops, panels and doctoral consortium for graduate students. The 22nd edition of the conference will be held in Limassol, Cyprus. Limassol (or Lemesos) is a multicultural bustling town, flanked by two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion, and guarded by the Amathusian Aphrodite and Appolo Hylates. It is a town of great visual diversity and contrast from spectacular seafront views, historic places like the mediaeval Castle, and Byzantine churches. Along the 17 km long sandy beaches, two Marinas, world renowned 5 star hotels, and a most exciting dining, shopping, nightlife and yachting scene create a year-round vibrant lifestyle well beyond the expectations of a Mediterranean island. The conference venue is the well known 5* beach hotel St. Raphael Resort, situated on one of the largest Blue Flag accredited beaches, only a short coastal drive from the lively centre of town, approximately 10 minutes away (http://www.raphael.com.cy) The Larnaca International Airport is 35 minutes away, and Paphos International Airport is 55 minutes away. There are shops, restaurants and bars within walking distance and a bus stop exactly outside the hotel. Whilst addressing the process of securing participant consent for my study that investigates language use in health discussion fora (anxiety disorders) the following concept became apparent: I suggest that the importance of utilising forum moderators’ knowledge and experience should not be underestimated; their understandings of group expectancies and constraints around group norms, constituted in the gatekeeper’s role, help to facilitate a richer and more contextually informed research ethics, which ultimately best serves the participants within a researcher’s care. Editor or co-editor of four books: Case Studies in Organizational and Managerial Communication: Stretching Boundaries (in press), Distinctive Qualities in Communication (2010), Gender in Applied Communication Contexts (2004), and Rethinking Organizational and Managerial Communication from Feminist Perspectives (2000), she has authored more than 175 articles and chapters plus encyclopedia entries and numerous proceedings in engineering education and other disciplines. She currently serves on 16 editorial boards and has edited Management Communication Quarterly and other journals as associate or special issues editor. Fellow of the International Communication Association (ICA), she has served as ICA President as well as President of the Council of Communication Associations (CCA) and the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language and Gender (OSCLG). Most recently, she has been awarded the B. Aubrey Fisher Mentorship Award from ICA and Distinguished Scholar from the National Communication Association. Her NSF funded projects involve construct development and validation of engineering ethics scales, the everyday constitution of ethics in engineering design teams, and design thinking to engage in diversity and inclusion, socio-technical intersections, and formation of engineering professionals. Cultivating Resilience in Career The ways in which individuals and communities communicatively constitute resilience has garnered increasing attention from scholars and practitioners seeking to help themselves and others construct a “new normal” after disaster and loss. In this seminar we examine how communication offers a distinctive vantage point for understanding resilience. Virtual communities spanning multiple online platforms

Dear all, I have a grad student who wants to look into this really interesting question in a literature review essay (see below) - I don't know what literatures to suggest to her however - the texts I am familiar with about virtual community all tend to look at them on a single platform. Are there multi-sited ethnographies and other studies examining this you can suggest? > I would like to look at how presence on multiple platforms (eg, Facebook, Twitter, Web, Blog, etc) either strengthens or dilutes a community. This springs off of the discussion you and I had last week about how the platform shapes the community (or not to beat the dead McLuhan horse - how the media shapes the message). I'm curious to examine how the community changes as the platform changes - eg, is it the same community spread across multiple platforms or does each platform represent a distinct community. Decommissioning Online Infrastructures

Hi All, I'm looking for literature suggestions. I'm currently starting work on a research project looking at Twitter's dismantling of the Vine video service. In line with the observation made in excellent essays like Steven Jackson's "Rethinking Repair" [1] and Marisa Cohn's "Engineering Obsolesence" [2], there seems to be a lot of research in both media studies and STS on how new technologies, products, and services get created, but not nearly so much on how older ones get dismantled, decommissioned, or enter into maintainership. I would welcome your recommendations of literature that touches on these areas. I'm interested in the topic broadly, but papers on the decommissioning of software and digital infrastructures would be particularly helpful. Many Thanks, Josh P.S. AoIR Ethics Working Group 3.0 - introductions; invitation to self-nominations; request for candidate issues, resources

Dear AoIR-ists, As many of you know, as part of our annual conference last October in Berlin, AoIR has initiated a new ethics working group to develop an internet research ethics (IRE) guidelines 3.0. The co-chairs of the new working group are: Anja Bechmann (Aarhus University, Denmark), Charles Ess (Oslo University, Norway), and Michael Zimmer (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee). Our broad plan is to research and develop a draft set of documents for review and comment by the AoIR membership, both by email (i.e., postings to the list with request for response) and as part of the 2018 conference. Depending on the outcomes of that process, we hope to have a semi-final version of the IRE guidelines 3.0 ready for final comment, again by email and, if needed, during the 2019 conference. We hope to have the final version ready for presentation for vote and eventual approval either at the 2019 conference or soon thereafter. A primary impetus for the new guidelines is the critical mass of participants and presenters at the IRE panels this past October: for the first time in our history the majority of presenters and participants were from outside the United States. As well, as was argued by many of the panel presentations, an IRE 3.0 is called for as continued technological and research developments open up new research ethics questions that are only partially addressed in IRE 1.0 (2002) and 2.0 (2012), if at all. In addition, many of the more contemporary issues – especially as driven by “Big Data” developments and research interests – are shared across a range of academic and professional communities, such as computer scientists engaged in the development of “networked systems ethics” (Bendert Zevenbergen) and The Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in the Design of Autonomous Systems (IEEE Standards Association - <https://standards.ieee.org/develop/project/7000.html> <https://standards.ieee.org/develop/project/7000.html>) At the same time, however, as with the 2.0 guidelines (2012), we anticipate that the 3.0 guidelines will thereby build and expand on both earlier guidelines as foundational documents and approaches in many ways. The WG 3.0 members are listed below: we are very grateful indeed that these colleagues have agreed to join us. As a more complete list of their CVs and research interests (available soon) makes clear, the WG is robustly international as well as radically interdisciplinary; it further includes colleagues outside the AoIR communities whose work will offer relevant insight and directions for an IRE 3.0. As well: we invite AoIR members who would be interested in joining the WG to send us your self-nominations to WG membership. We especially encourage these from scholars and researchers whose work and background will help represent the voices, perspectives, and traditions of areas currently underrepresented in the WG - namely, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Participating in the WG entails a commitment of ca. 20-30 hours a year for the next 3 years or so. While we hope that many members of the WG 3.0 will be able to attend the annual AoIR conferences and participate in IRE-related events (roundtables, panels, fishbowls, open listening sessions, WG meetings, and, eventually, open meetings with the membership to review and refine suggested IRE 3.0 guidelines) - such attendance is not a requirement for WG membership. Finally, as with all things AoIR (smile), these are volunteer positions: we have no funds to offer to support conference attendance, etc. If you are interested in nominating yourself to the WG, please get in touch with us off-list; we'll send along a more complete position description and approximate schedule of our activities. Self-nomination requires no more than a brief summary of your academic background and research interests, coupled with a few lines about the specific ethical challenges and issues you would like to focus on as part of your contribution to the WG. Lastly, we will be very grateful for your suggestions for what you see as emerging ethical challenges in internet-facilitated research, their possible resolutions, and/or relevant resources. You are welcome to post your suggestions to the AoIR list and/or send them along to the co-chairs off-list. Posting suggestions to the list may help spark other ideas and suggestions as well that we can take on board. Some of the immediate results of our work will be presented and open for discussion as part of the AoIR conference in Tartu this coming October.
