As such, we cordially invite researchers, designers, activists, technologists and artists that are exploring and/or experimenting with critical design projects, political design, design-for future-use, for and with social movements, alternative ways of living and alternative economies, to envision and generate a comprehensive program of research. The goal of such research program is to investigate emergent design practices that involve both the design of the material, technical artifact and the political movement, social enterprise or grassroots communities committed to enact social change through citizen’s participation. Some of the questions we would like to discuss in this workshop are: What is the designer’s agency in configuring and infrastructuring civic participation and engagement in society? How much should the designer be involved in the process of infrastructuring civic participation? What are the kinds of dilemmas (i.e. technical but most importantly, those associated with designers’ own values, beliefs, ideologies, subjectivities) that emerge when designers develop their practices in order to contribute to citizen’s participation and political action? Designers who are committed to contributing to civic participation; what are they sensitive to? How do designers’ practices and institutions configure and give shape to online tools for civic engagement and participation? How can the impact of civic technology design be sustained over time? This workshop seeks to bring together works that illustrate, analyze and/or critically inquire innovative ways to do design for civic engagement and participation. By innovative ways of doing design, we mean ways that go beyond applying PD methods with the aim to include the user in the development of a computer system or with the goal to reach consensus among the stakeholders inherently involved. We mean ways of doing design that envisage socio-technological interventions that partake in the ongoing constitution of publics or/and communities and put continuously design efforts into infrastructuring present and future civic participation. The workshop will consider the following topics: Research-oriented approaches as well as Design-oriented approaches focused on civic engagement and participation. We will consider both participation that aims to change the whole authority establishment (political hacking) and more narrowly-focused participation that nevertheless aims to change society (social entrepreneurship) and civic participation that focuses on improving specific aspects like voting, energy, sustainability, transport infrastructure, etc. Challenges involved when doing design with the goal of infrastructuring civic participation and specific ways to deal with them in order to contribute to development of resilient participation practices within publics and/or communities. What challenges were observed, in various cases? Research methods for the study of how designer’s role and design practices get entangled in tools developed for civic engagement, participation and political action. Learning processes involved in design practices aimed at civic participation, and in particular how they can be scaffold within designing for infrastructuring civic participation? Participate: International survey on Open Government Data

The Government Technology Agency of Singapore has launched a research project to discover how the average citizen uses open government data. GovTech has created an international survey <http://markelytics.dubinterviewer.com/scripts/dubinterviewer.dll/Frames?Que…> to compare open government data initiatives across ten countries: Australia, Finland, France, India, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, the US, UK and Taiwan. The survey is part of a Data.gov.sg <https://data.gov.sg/> campaign that GovTech is running. It is hoped that from the findings, GovTech will be able to get a clearer picture of the perception or usage of open data globally amongst these countries. To help the general public make more informed decisions in their daily lives, governments the world over have been providing real-time data that is free to access online. Use of this data has led to developers creating services and apps that solve real-world problems and help their fellow citizens. As an example, commuters in many countries are now able to plan their trips on public transport more effectively. Developers have also used such data to monitor the environment and track the performance of educational institutions, among other social benefits. Call for Proposals - Netflix at the Nexus: Content, Practice, and Production in the Age of Streaming Television

We are seeking contributions from a variety of networks we belong to including this one, and we hope that many scholars who do work in the areas of platforms, critical media studies, and cultural practice will submit something for the collection. Call for Proposals Netflix at the Nexus: Content, Practice, and Production in the Age of Streaming Television Netflix’s meteoric rise as an online content provider has been well documented and much debated in the popular press and in academic circles. It has been praised as the future of television (Auletta, 2014) and as “the most feared force in Hollywood” (Villarreal & James, 2016), while also decried as the end of “TV’s Golden Age” and blamed for ushering in an era where “TV shows may be briefer, lower-budget and filled with the kind of product-placement ads that audiences hate and advertisers pay for” (Thielman, 2016). Interestingly though, amongst the academic inquiry thus far, much of this research has dealt primarily with the algorithmic culture and nature of Netflix (Hallinan & Striphas, 2016; Gomez-Uribe & Hunt, 2016; Amatriain, 2013), binge watching (Jenner, 2015, 2016; Pittman, & Sheehan, 2015), engagement, (Groshek, & Krongard, 2016; Matrix, 2014); and the future of television, (Auletta, 2014). The editors seek contributions to this collection that will broaden this discussion greatly, focusing on Netflix in three specific ways: • platform - How does the nature of Netflix streaming change our relationship to media? How does Netflix’s interface design impact media consumption? How does Netflix change our media consumption in mobile contexts? What are the cultural implications of Netflix’s business model? • content – What kind of content does Netflix privilege? How does the streaming model change serialized programming? What are these effects on narrative? Does Netflix’s streaming model prelude a more diverse offering for consumers interested in “quality TV?” Do representations in Netflix offerings differ from traditional broadcast programming? Is there a “Netflix genre,” shows produced by Netflix can be recognized as such? • viewer practices – What kind of viewing practices does Netflix encourage? What is the nature of viewer discourse surrounding binging and other streaming viewing practices? How do fans discuss and build community around Netflix programs? How do fans incorporate social media into their viewing habits? Do users utilize social media as a second screen when discussing their favorite programs? diverse US pubTV programs under attack--support response?

I hope that US members of AIR would consider lending an academic's voice to the support for creative, diverse documentaries, which Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) just used as a reason to defund public broadcasting. All the info is in this release <http://www.indiecaucus.org/blog/2017/4/6/indiecaucusresponsetocongress> from the International Documentary Association and Indiecaucus. I'm on the board of the Independent Television Service and have seen all these films, which are sterling examples of experiential documentaries about complex and underreported issues. I also, like some of you, have spent way too much time learning endless acronyms in an attempt to understand how public media function in the media flows that inform, or don't, our civil societies. The studies Caty Borum Chattoo and I recently did on diversity in US documentary programming are referred to in the release. While this is to one side of strictly academic issues, I hope that it will be seen as an acceptable post, given the connection between public media practice and research.
