Likewise, digital humanities struggles with building towards a future that is more inclusive and interdisciplinary. This year, we hope to address the unsolved hard problems and explore the new opportunities of the digital humanities. We particularly welcome submissions addressing themes such as: - challenges of monolingualism within the digital humanities - indigenous culture, decolonial and post-colonial theory and technology - technology and education–open learning, peer learning, and issues of access, equity for primary and/or higher education - communication of knowledge, publishing, and intellectual property - digital cultural heritage and hegemony - interdisciplinary goals and conversations in digital humanities - digital humanities and gender, race, and other identities - simulation, modeling, and visualization - games and gaming, including for learning - community development including the importance of art and culture districts - other unsolved hard problems in digital humanities HASTAC 2017 will include plenary panels, workshops, roundtables, short “soapbox” talks, project demos, poster sessions, and a curated media arts show exhibition. At HASTAC, we invite you to think about the format of your session as well as the content. We seek proposals for participant presentations in the following categories: - 5-8 minute “soapbox” talks - roundtables (be creative with your format — no reading papers!) - project demos - digital and/or print posters - maker sessions or workshops - Media arts (new media, games, and electronic literature) For each submission, we will need the following information from you: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, email, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) maximum 500-word abstract of the work you would like to present that must discuss its relationship to the conference themes; 3) any technical requirements or other support (including space requirements) that may be required for the presentation. For exhibitions or other performances, please indicate any equipment that is absolutely required and that you cannot bring with you. In the event that we cannot guarantee access to the equipment, we regret that we may not be able to accept your proposal. *Digital and/or Print Posters Wanted!* Print posters (4 x 3’) and electronic posters (to be projected) are solicited for emerging projects, ideas, and scholars. In presenting your research with a poster, you should aim to use the poster as a means for generating active discussion of your research. Limit the text to about one-fourth of the poster space, and use visuals (graphs, photographs, schematics, maps, etc.) to tell your story. Use the regular submission form, but indicate that you are proposing a Poster by checking the appropriate box. *Maker Sessions & Workshops* We will provide some room and resources for individuals or groups to create informal maker spaces, where conference participants can share, exchange, and experiment with new online tools, personal fabrication technologies, open source electronics such as Arduino, and other creative and learning devices and gadgets. To propose a maker session or workshop, please use the standard submission form and indicate that yours is a maker session. Please also tell us how long the session requires! *Media Arts Show* The Media Arts Show invites creative works that engage with the show’s theme, “Soft(ware) Solutions / Hard Problems.” Works of new media, including games, electronic literature, and installations that meld physical and digital components, are welcome. Please provide a detailed description of the work, its purpose, and all technical and physical requirements for display. All proposals will be peer-reviewed, but we regret that we cannot provide detailed reviewer feedback. Many thanks, Ian Call for Participation: Archives Unleashed 4.0 Web Archive Datathon http://archivesunleashed.com The British Library June 11 – 13, 2017 Travel grants will be available for US-based graduate students. Applications for all attendees are due 7 March 2017 (midnight anywhere in the world). Call for Participation This event is the fourth workshop in the Archives Unleashed series. Each event is a standalone datathon aimed at building the Web Archiving community and providing a forum for interdisciplinary collaboration. The World Wide Web has a profound impact on how we research and understand the past. The sheer amount of cultural information that is generated and, crucially, preserved every day in electronic form, presents exciting new opportunities for researchers. Much of this information is captured within web archives. Web archives often contain hundreds of billions of web pages, ranging from individual homepages and social media posts, to institutional websites. These archives offer tremendous potential for social scientists and humanists, and the questions research may pose stretch across a multitude of fields. Scholars broaching topics dating back to the mid-1990s will find their projects enhanced by web data. Moreover, scholars hoping to study the evolution of cultural and societal phenomena will find a treasure trove of data in web archives. In short, web archives offer the ability to reconstruct large-scale traces of the relatively recent past. While there has been considerable discussion about web archive tools and datasets, few forums or mechanisms for coordinated, mutually informing development efforts have been created. Our series of datathons presents an opportunity to collaboratively unleash our web collections, exploring cutting-edge research tools while fostering a broad-based consensus on future directions in web archive analysis. This event will bring together a small group of 35 – 45 participants to collaboratively develop new open-source tools and approaches to web archives, and to kick-off collaboratively inspired research projects. Researchers should be comfortable with command line interactions, and knowledge of a scripting language (such as but not limited to Python) is strongly desired. By bringing together a group of like-minded scholars and programmers, we hope to begin building unified analytic production effort and to continue coalescing this nascent research community. At this event, we hope to continue to converge on a shared vision of future directions in the use of web archives for inquiry in the humanities and social sciences in order to build a community of practice around various web archive analytics platforms and tools. The event is sponsored by the British Library (lead sponsor), Rutgers University, University of Waterloo, the National Science Foundation and the International Internet Preservation Consortium. In addition, there will be a reception the first night and a dinner the second night, supported by funding from the NetLab at Aarhus University, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and Rutgers University. ‘Digital Economies of Disability’ call for papers for special issue of Information, Communication & Society (ICS) edited by Haiqing Yu (UNSW), Gerard Goggin (Sydney), Karen Fisher (UNSW), and Bingqin Li (UNSW) This special issue aims to bring together original research papers from a diversified range of disciplines in disability studies, media and communication studies, social policy research, economic anthropology, and sociology to explore pragmatic and innovative ways to provide and enable equal economic, social and political opportunities for people with disabilities, from a comparative framework. It seeks to examine the opportunities for economic participation of people with disabilities enabled by digital and social media technologies and their political and social implications on respective communities and societies. It is known that digital economy is developing rapidly and unevenly worldwide. It heralds a transformative force in creating digital entrepreneurs and driving future economy. Digital entrepreneurship is seen as core to digital economy in that it can lead to economic growth, job creation, and social innovation. National governments, civil society organizations, and disability activists have considered digital technologies (represented by computers, the Internet, and smart phones) potentially useful in improving the life quality and life-chances for people with disabilities and in bringing about social inclusion for all people, particularly in health care, education, and employment. Efforts have been made to remove barriers of access to technologies, skill trainings and acquisition that are friendly to users with disability. Assistant programs are also implemented to ease the financial burden to access and acquire these technologies by people with disabilities. However, access to technologies (digital inclusion) does not equate with social inclusion. There is a long way to go before digital technologies can successfully impact on the lives of people with disabilities, as suggested by Goggin and Newell (2003). In the context of digital and networked world, we ask questions such as: * Can digital inclusion lead to social inclusion, particularly for people with disabilities? * What are the power structure, hierarchy, struggle, and appropriation implied in the rise of digital economy for and by disability? * What can be done by people (with or without disabilities), governments, the private sector, and civil society organisations to address the structural barriers to social and economic inclusion (not just digital inclusion) by utilizing digital and networking technologies? * Will digital economy and digital entrepreneurship present an opportunity to address social inequality and contradictions? The current economic slowdown/crisis calls for innovative and pragmatic approaches to solve social problems, approaches that can strike a balance between economic and social development. Social entrepreneurship that leverage digital technologies to create opportunities to address social issues, for example, may offer a new pathway of employment and enablement for people with disabilities and other traditionally disadvantaged groups of people. Digital social entrepreneurs with disabilities and for disabilities are part of a bigger structure and a key stakeholder in the digital social economy. Born of necessity, social economy has increasingly employed digital technologies and platforms to achieve efficiency, transparency, and optimum results in achieving social missions and social impact through economic activities. Will social economy for and of people with disabilities through digital means be an answer to tackle barriers for people with disability to be more actively members of society and enabling people to achieve collective social goals, and ultimately enhance social justice? This special issue welcomes critical case analyses of digital economy by and for disability and its implications for digital and social inclusion for people with disabilities from all walks of life. It is hoped that this special issue will generate scholarly interests from a wide range of geographical and disciplinary areas to explore innovative approaches to and opportunities for people with disabilities to achieve agency, social recognition, economic security, and political participation, through enterprising and digital means. *CFP: ’Complexity of power in the smart city’ - A Special Issue for /The International Communication Gazette/* The ever more pervasive digitalization of physical infrastructures with the rapid proliferation of the ‘internet of everything’ has amplified the nature of cities as media, i.e. as technologically mediated communicative systems. A prime example of ICT-infused urban developments is the so-called Smart City – a successfully marketed and globally prominent model for the city of the future. In the smart city scenarios, cities function like computers, optimized to manage any problems of urban life with automated and sustainable efficiency. In terms of communication, what these visions epitomize is an urge to create a frictionless cybernetic organism – a desire that calls for a (self-)reflexive reassessment of cybernetics and systems theory in the field of contemporary communication and media studies. There is plenty of critical research on the smart city as trademarked and promoted by technology companies, such as Cisco, HP, IBM and Microsoft, in collaboration with the public sector and other corporate actors. In this special issue, we refer with the notion ‘smart’ more broadly to the ubiquitous role that software and algorithms have come to play, together and as entangled with material structures, in the sociotechnical constitution of urban environments, and spurred by the profit seeking economic logic that drives technology development worldwide. Proceeding from the observation that ‘smartness’ not only renders cities spatially multiple but also involves human actors in the production of space in historically novel ways, we focus on how power is reconfigured as part of this process. The starting point of addressing the complexification of spatial power in the special issue is dual. On the one hand, smart urban management creates unpredictable, often uncontrollable and conflictual, tendencies that present new challenges to the established policies and practices of city planning. On the other hand, the deepening digital mediation profoundly affects how ordinary city dwellers contribute to urban power dynamics. As regards the latter, one pertinent question concerns the incorporation of smart devices with their multiple computational and networked affordances into urbanites’ taken for granted bodily behaviour and their daily movements and (inter)actions. ** *Focus of the special issue* Against the above background, we are looking for 2–3 complementary articles to a special issue (to be published by /the International Communication Gazette/) on the complexity of power in the digitally mediated contemporary cities. We invite contributions from researchers in different disciplines, interested in the power implications of the entangled technological, economic and political urban developments. In addition to communication and media studies, submissions from the fields of STS, sociology, geography, urban studies, architecture and game studies, among others, are most welcome. The articles should address in one way or another the following aspects of spatial power in the contemporary urban context (or any other dimension, including historical, that may relate to our rationale): -complexity of cities as a challenge to urban planning and design as well as to urban planning theory -potential of fictional methods and playful design in transforming strategically motivated and top down planning practices -the role of urbanites’ mediated bodily activities in the spatial production -interests and values underlying the smart city scenarios -reconfiguration of urban spatial power as a challenge to communication research and media theory The special issue will explore these and related questions by bringing together contributions from both experienced scholars and researchers who are at an early stage of their career.
