Call for Papers: AMCIS 2018 Minitrack: Social Theory in Information Systems Research (STIR ’18) Track: Social Inclusion (SIGSI) 24th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS), Aug. 16-18, 2018 New Orleans, LA, USA This minitrack solicits papers using social theory to critically examine ICTs and their roles in enabling and constraining social inclusion. What can be done to improve access to computing for underrepresented groups? In what ways do new technologies impact digital divides? What are the social, cultural, political, and economic implications of the Internet of things? These are examples of the kinds of questions we are interested in exploring in this minitrack. We are particularly interested in completed or emerging research using social theory to address the conference theme, Digital Disruption, critically examining the ways in which emerging technologies are changing the sociotechnical landscape in ways that narrow or widen the digital divide. This will be the 18th consecutive year for STIR, and we hope to continue a tradition of high quality papers, and thought-provoking and lively discussion for IS researchers using social theory in their work. In addition to research aligned with the conference theme we are also interested in high quality empirical and conceptual work that uses social theory to investigate issues such as (but not limited to): • Improving access to computing for underrepresented minorities • Reengineering the pipeline in STEM education for greater inclusiveness and diversity • Critically assessing the ways in which ICTs and information systems can be used to privilege some and exclude others • Understanding the impacts of the Internet of Things on the digital divide • Assessing the unintended consequences of technology implementation and use in organizations and in social life • Reflection on the ways in which ICT assemblages support and challenge political, cultural, and economic hegemonies. Call for Papers: AMCIS 2018 Minitrack: Shadow Information Technologies and Practices Track: Organizational Transformation and Information Systems (SIGORSA) 24th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS), Aug. 16-18, 2018 New Orleans, LA, USA Shadow Information Technologies and Practices is a new mini-track in the Organizational Transformation and Information Systems (SIGORSA) track. This mini-track solicits papers that address the socio-technical implications, outcomes, and disruptive nature of shadow information technology (shadow IT) and shadow practices of organizational actors within complex organizations. Shadow IT refers to artifacts that are used or developed within organizations outside of and without the approval and knowledge of an organization’s IT department. Socio-technical shadow practices, also known as feral practices, are those in which organizational actors engage with either shadow IT or existing systems in ways that differ from the expected practices, and which take place unbeknownst to organizational and IT managers. The emergence of shadow IT and practices can have broad socio-technical implications for organizations, including those related to organizational power relations, IT governance, and security. Given the theme of the conference, Digital Disruption, we are particularly interested in papers that examine the emergence of shadow IT and practices in response to the introduction and digital disruption of new technologies within business and organizations. In addition to research aligned with the conference theme we are also interested in high quality empirical and conceptual work that seeks to study and understand other aspects of shadow IT and practices. Such social media data require the application of big data analytics to produce meaningful information to both information consumers and data generators. Machine learning and AI techniques are particularly effective in situations where deep and predictive insights need to be uncovered from such social media data sets that are large, diverse and fast changing. Following the discussion at our workshop at WWW2017, we aim to focus on how to apply machine learning and AI models, algorithms and systems for analytics and predictive modeling on social media and the web. Contrary to last year’s workshop, we would like to particularly invite researchers that are interested in going beyond standard analytics approaches and try to discover the intelligent information hidden in the large and fast-changing social media data. In this context, we would also like to invite researchers in the machine learning, AI, natural language processing, data and web mining community to lend their expertise to help to increase our understanding of the web and social media. Overall, we are interested in receiving papers related to the following topics which include but are not limited to: • learning analytics methods or frameworks for social media, big data and the web • AI, machine learning and NLP techniques for social media, big data and the web • deep learning approaches and models for social media, big data and the web • approaches for social influence learning • learning methods for social link prediction • methods for learning social activities and behavioral analytic metrics • machine learning and AI models, algorithms and systems • evaluation of machine learning and AI frameworks and metrics • applications of machine learning and AI • applications of any of the above methods and technologies The goal of this workshop is to apply machine learning and AI approaches and algorithms on social media, big data and the web. Submissions: We solicit full research papers (4-8 pages), and short papers (1-4 pages) both in the ACM conference paper style. Hi all, I've recently moved to UCL where I am initiating a new MPA in Digital Technologies and Public Policy <http://www.ucl.ac.uk/steapp/study/masters/2018-19/digital-technologies-and-…>. The program prepares future leaders and decision makers working in policy to meet the challenges and opportunities presented by today's fast-evolving digital technologies. The program has a strong applied element that involves co-produced group research projects between the students and policy 'clients' from the public and private sectors. I'm looking for ambitious, open-minded, curious students who are willing to step out of their disciplinary silos to work collaboratively with students from across the University. The pre-conference takes issue with the mundane yet pervasive nature of media habits, rituals, and customs. It assesses the purchase of practice-based approaches in order to see under what conditions and with what consequences they enter studies in communication and media. In particular, we invite participants to consider the expressive and performative dimension of what people actually do and say in relation to media and to the wider communication ecologies in which these articulations take place. We are especially interested in contributions that examine how voices are expressed, represented, or muted and that study the ways practices of voice combine, overlap, or collide with other mediated activities in contemporary societies. With this, we strive for an explanation and critical appreciation of media practices whose accomplishment is a perennial exercise in which we find ourselves immersed. We welcome theoretical and/or empirical contributions on questions including: How can we theorize and study the interplay between media-related practices and technologies, discourses, or institutions? How are these constellations created, maintained, and transformed? How do praxeological approaches correspond to other inquiries into speech acts, media rituals, or media habits? What resources and skills are mobilized in order to perform voices? What is the meaning of the work that goes into activities of voicing? How do they contribute to or undermine the constitution of public spheres, privacy, and civic life in past and contemporary societies? How do we grasp media practices empirically, and how do we analyze them across modes of expression, across cultures, different times, and ages? How can we challenge and advance the kinds of translation and transformation happening in-between the situated enactment of media practices and the descriptions and stories of scholarly accounts? How can we understand the ways through which media practices are accomplished in social fields? How are they deployed in struggles for gaining voice and visibility as in political communication and journalism, participation and mobilization, health communication, or science communication? Dear all, I'm teaching a 3h workshop on ethics and co-creation for postgraduates in Fashion Design and Management. We will be seeing some examples of collaboration, co-creation, exploitation cultural appropriation and homage, and I am looking for some interesting references (papers, case studies, blog posts, news articles... all welcome) One of the case studies that I was planning to discuss is Isabel Marant's apropiation of Mixe embroidery in her 2015 collection https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/mexico-prevents-indigenous-designs-fro… Also, I would love some recommendations on your favourite co-creation manuals for postgrads and undergrads. The Department of Communication Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University welcomes applications to its M.A. program. Our program has two streams: a co-op stream<https://www.wlu.ca/programs/arts/graduate/communication-studies-ma/program-…> that takes 16 months to complete; and our regular stream that takes 1 year to complete. Both programs offer critical engagement with core perspectives in communication studies as well as contemporary research methodologies and practices. Students in the one-year, full-time program typically take three courses each term (Fall and Winter) and complete a Major Research Paper in the Spring/Summer. Students registered in the co-op program generally complete the co-op placement in Spring/Summer and the Major Research Paper in the following Fall term. Our courses for the 2018/2019 academic year are: Platform Studies Network Cultures Critical Discourse Studies Communication Studies Research Methods Graduate Seminar in Communication Studies Global Cultures: Hybrids, Homogeneities, and Flows We have a large, supportive, and interdisciplinary faculty consisting of established and emerging researchers in areas of specialization that include mobile and social media, visual communication, media history, Internet studies, transnationalism, cultural policy, alternative media, and creative industries. Our MA cohorts are generally small and the Communication Studies department has on campus facilities that support student research, including a media lab. The M.A. Program in Communication Studies is offered at Laurier’s campus in Waterloo, Ontario, a university-oriented region with a thriving media technology sector. All applicants are considered for an entrance scholarship. M.A. students are employed as Teaching Assistants in undergraduate Communication Studies courses, and have the opportunity to work as Research Assistants to funded faculty members. Students who hold a major external award (e.g., SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarship) are eligible for additional scholarship funding. Graduates from our program have pursued doctoral studies and launched professional communication careers in a variety of private, public sector, and non-profit organizations.
