Some of the material impacts of data infrastructures can be felt in our everyday lives through interactions with location awareness and transportation apps, music recommender systems, health tracking and grocery store checkouts. And yet, after decades of infrastructure studies, STS methods and theories are increasingly stretched to accommodate the scale and rate at which data infrastructures manifest. As systems of governance, social justice, commerce and warfare are embedded in and utterly reliant upon data infrastructures, the stakes could not be higher. This panel invites contributions that engage with the methodological challenges associated with investigating socio-technical invisibilities in digital data infrastructures. Here we envisage invisibilities to encompass the context of wide-ranging socio-technical relations that enable and disable access to data infrastructures, from black-boxed algorithms and internet protocols to labour and organisational structures. The panel welcomes critical reflection on the ontological and material implications of the ways in which invisibility in data infrastructures is conceptualised in STS, and by extension, operationalised into methods and methodological interventions. We invite creative methodological contributions to STS that reconfigure and extend existing concepts to develop ways of engaging with varying types and degrees of access and absence in digital infrastructures – where even the barriers themselves may become the subject of study. Call for Participation: ---- CHI 2018 Workshop - “Grand Visions” for Post-Capitalist HCI Montréal, Canada, Saturday 21st April 2018. Submission deadline: 2nd February 2018. http://hci.post-capitalist.com ---- It is acknowledged that all digital technology is designed, whether knowingly or not, to fit a specific worldview or political stance. For example “sharing economy” services such as Uber or AirBnB, support a Silicon Valley-centric future devoid of state regulation and anti-monopoly legislation. As a community, we must question to what end are we improving the efficiency, efficacy and satisfaction of interactions. Are our goals any different to that of entrepreneurs? New technology is typically proposed as a way of cutting costs, removing or lowering the need for human work. Yet it is rare to see technology designed towards a future in which making money is not a key concern – it seems to be currently beyond our collective imagination. In this workshop we wish to counteract this. We wish to convene academics, artists, designers, and developers to explore the interstices of HCI and post-capitalism, and design to support and facilitate a post-capitalist future. We welcome one of two formats of submission: 1) A two-page ACM Extended Abstract format position paper 2) A short video submission (2-4 minutes) along with a 1-2 paragraph expression of interest. Both submission formats should outline the authors’ motivations, ideas and potential designs for the workshop. Examples of topics include: tools to enable greater civic participation, technologies and systems to remove corporate/financial influence, how fully automated luxury communism might work, tools to suppress the rise of capitalism, disrupting the marginalisation of vulnerable populations, approaches to encourage communism and the emancipation of big data. We ask the authors to indicate how many authors will attend the workshop as places are limited. All workshop participants must register for both the workshop and for at least one day of the main CHI conference. Our daily lives and activities take place in digital media; information provision is highly personalized; decision-making is guided (automated) by the use of algorithms, machine learning, and artificial intelligence; personal information is traded on the information market by platforms and data brokers; and surveillance, in many forms, is increasingly pervading both the public-facing and more intimate aspects of our daily lives. In the 2018 edition of IER, we seek proposals that approach these interconnections and interdependencies through the lens of information ethics (writ large, to include those working in multiple fields and with differing methods). The Information Ethics Roundtable (held annually since 2003) is a yearly conference that brings together researchers from disciplines such as philosophy, information science, communications, public administration, anthropology, and law to discuss ethical issues such as information privacy, intellectual property, intellectual freedom, and censorship. Proposals for IER 2018 should be situated within the general field of information ethics (although participants are expected to come from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds) and, ideally, should connect two or more of the following areas of inquiry: - Surveillance, privacy, and/or data protection  - Algorithms, machine learning, and/or artificial intelligence (AI) - Digital culture, digital media, social media, and/or other forms of digital media (non-)use  *Proposal requirements* We invite two types of proposals: (1) Papers: please submit a 500-word abstract of your paper. If accepted, you are expected to submit a full paper prior to the Roundtable, and you will be presenting the paper at the conference. The paper will not be stored in a public repository or published in proceedings. (2) Panels: please submit a 1500-word description of your panel. Apologies, my previous post contained an error concerning the new dates. PEER PRODUCTION: RESEARCH AND PRACTICE The Journal of Peer Production (JoPP) is a volunteer-run peer-reviewed journal which has since 2011 both researched and put into practice the principles of peer production, understood as a mode of commons-based and oriented production in which participation is voluntary and predicated on the self-selection of tasks. Notable examples are the collaborative development of Free Software projects and of the Wikipedia online encyclopedia. JoPP is an open-access journal that allows readers to read, download, copy, distribute and link to the full texts of articles. Authors license works under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) and retain full copyright in their work. In terms of research, we have published ten landmark issues exploring the interconnection of peer production with activism, political economy, bio and hardware hacking, free software, value and currency, shared machine shops, the law, state policies, feminism and queer issues, alternative infrastructures, and waged labour. We will publish our eleventh issue on peer production and urbanism in January 2018 and our twelfth on the institutionalisation of shared machine shops in May 2018. In terms of practice, we have debated policy decisions on a public and archived mailing list. We have renovated the scientific peer review system by publishing not only reviews of papers, but also – in order to fully appreciate the impact of reviews – original submissions of articles. We have launched a “signalling” system so that imperfect articles can be published rapidly, whilst maintaining the standards and reputation of the journal. Having defined the field of peer production studies and put into practice peer production principles, we now seek to foster new avenues and partnerships. We are calling this new phase in the development of the Journal of Peer Production “OPEN”. At the root of “OPEN” is the fact that we now live in an era where exclusion and inequality are being justified by overtly racist, even fascist, ideas. It is therefore more important than ever for progressives to develop viable alternatives to plutocracy and environmental destruction which highlight peer values such as inclusion and openness. There are two parts to JoPP “OPEN”: “OPEN” EOI and “OPEN” CFP. JOPP: “OPEN” EOI We are calling for “OPEN” editorial Expressions of Interest from people wanting to develop their own take on peer production. This means we are offering our website and network of reviewers for the production and dissemination of activist or scientific interventions in the field of peer production. Internet, Policy and Politics 2018: Long Live Democracy? 20 - 21 September 2018, University of Oxford. This conference is convened by the Oxford Internet Institute for the OII-edited academic journal Policy and Internet, in collaboration with the European Consortium of Political Research (ECPR) standing group on Internet and Politics. http://ipp.oii.ox.ac.uk/2018/call-for-papers This conference will question the theses of democratic renewal - and democratic decay - in a digital world. We are looking for rigorous research that helps us understand the role of digital platforms in democratic processes and in the development of new institutional arrangements that ensure democratic systems remain free, fair and open. Current democratic and government structures are in urgent need of institutional renewal if they are to survive in the 21st century but we remain optimistic that harnessing the potential of internet-mediated technologies might support the reinvigoration of democracy. In this conference we thus seek to place critical attention on the potential role of internet mediated activity in undermining core aspects of democracy whilst also calling for positive, optimistic contributions which highlight the many ways in which the internet has allowed existing democracies to grow and change. We welcome theoretical, empirical, qualitative and quantitative studies, from all disciplines. CALL FOR PAPERS: DIGITAL⇌CULTURE 2018 A one-day conference hosted by the Digital Culture Research Network<http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/groups/digital-culture-research-networ…>, and supported by the Midlands3Cities DTP (M3C) Cohort Development Fund Date: Friday 20th April 2018 Venue: University of Nottingham Abstract Submission Deadline: Friday 9th February 2018 'Digital⇌Culture 2018' explores the varied links between digital and cultural processes. Digital tools such as social media, mobile devices, video games, data analysis infrastructures, and networked technologies increasingly permeate our everyday lives. As a result, the production and expression of ‘meanings’ or ‘values’ – like the experience and performance of identity, gender, embodied lived experience, political activism, linguistic engagement, knowledge and power relations – are increasingly co-constituted by digital platforms. This one-day conference, which includes keynote speeches from Prof. Tim Jordan (University of Sussex, UK) and Dr. Katrin Tiidenberg (Aarhus University, Denmark), aims to bring together researchers from a wide array of disciplines with an interest in digital culture. Submission We invite proposals from diverse disciplinary backgrounds to present theoretical and empirical research in response, but not limited, to the following topics: - How can we meaningfully study the relationship between digital platforms and the activities they enable? - What is the relationship between features of digital platforms and the communicative acts they mediate? - How can we understand the value landscape of digital entertainment? - How do features of digital platforms become re-appropriated as resources for the construction and performance of identity, and to what extent does this in turn shape perceptions of the platform? - How do digital platforms participate in knowledge-creation and the establishment of dominant discourses? - How do digital platforms affect the aesthetic and artistic practices of mediation? To encourage proposals from doctoral students, we are awarding six joint-travel/accommodation grants to successful proposals. Further details below. There will be no fee charged for presenting at, or attending, this conference. The grant is open to all doctoral applicants, but at least three of the grants are reserved for non-M3C-funded applicants based at the DTP’s six institutions (Uni. Of Nottingham; Nottingham Trent; Birmingham City; Uni. of Birmingham; De Montfort; Uni. of Leicester). Those currently funded by M3C are not eligible to apply for this grant. This grant will only be offered to doctoral students whose papers have been accepted for the conference.
