Readings on internet 'addiction'?

Hello All I'm putting together a new UG social media module, and after eliciting feedback from students, there's interest in internet 'addiction'. In the past, I shun away from these kinds of discussions about 'addiction', as they can be empirically dubious, with simplistic - psychological, rather than sociological - notions of subjectivity and behaviour. Although now that (controversially) the WHO may be classifying gaming disorder as a mental health condition, it struck me that the topic does need some serious attention. And more generally, there are seemingly convincing claims about how the design of social media platforms and apps exploit our attention, e.g. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/oct/05/smartphone-addiction-sil… Are there critically informed academic resources/readings the hive-mind of AoIR would recommend on this topic? (I'm happy to compile and re-circulate to the mailing-list). So we seem to agree on your second statement. Regarding the first: suppose that Charles designs a study that asks minors (or really anyone) to engage in civil disobedience. Perhaps he asks them to trespass, with a risk of arrest and an arrest record. For good reasons, like saving baby seals or giving persons of color seats at the lunch counter or something. Definitely illegal. But also highly ethical behavior on the part of the study subjects. ls Charles behaving unethically in asking them to behave highly ethically but illegally? Research ethics on musical.ly project

Dear AoIR community, My colleague Neta Kligler-Vilenchik and I are embarking on a project that deals with young people's political expression on the musical.ly app, and we would appreciate any thoughts you have on the ethical design of this research. Specifically, we are interested in how young people use memetic dimensions to collectively express political affiliations, and are thus looking at use of two major political hashtags on the application. We are using a mixed methods approach and plan to quantitatively code a large dataset of around 1800 videos posted on the app, so we will rely heavily on the aggregated quantitative data; however, in mentioning examples, we would like to take extra precautions because many if not most users of musical.ly are minors. The only information readers would have about the participants is the hashtag used by the creators (which constitutes our inclusion criteria for the sample). We will be anonymizing usernames, will not include screenshots where users are visible, and we will talk about examples in a non-specific way, without using searchable quotes. The musical.ly app has very limited search capabilities, as you are only able to search by tag, username or audio soundtrack. Beyond these steps, do you have any other suggestions we should take into account in our approach, and our IRB application? From the VNS Matrix’ Cyberfeminist Manifesto to Laboria Cuboniks’ Xenofeminist Manifesto, Australian feminists have been at the forefront of experimental and radical scholarship and practice. While concepts from cyberfeminism and xenofeminism are now transnational, their uniquely situated histories within genealogies of feminist technoscience warrants further engagement. This open panel invites papers reflecting on Australian feminist technoscience “post-cyber feminism.” What mutations have occurred over time? By mutation, we refer to the transmission, variation and corruption of ideas and approaches to “doing” feminist theory and practice. Mutations call to attention changes in situated material contexts, in this case, the specific material-semiotic assemblages of time/place/people/events we call “Australia.” The questions we seek to address include: What are the uniquely Australian histories of feminist technoscience? How do these intersect with other forms of Australian feminisms, such as Aboriginal, postcolonial, queer? How can we think “xeno”-politics in a settler-colonising society? Call for Papers: Political Polarization Workshop – Social Media and Political Polarization in Non-U.S. Contexts Workshop to be held in conjunction with Conference on E-Democracy and Open Government Asia 2018 (CeDEM Asia 2018) Conference dates: July 12-13th, 2018 Location: Yokohama, Japan Confirmed keynotes: Shanto Iyengar, Stanford University Francis Lee, Chinese University of Hong Kong Workshop Chairs: Tetsuro Kobayashi and Marko M. Skoric Social media allow us to tune in selectively to the sources that share our partisan and ideological leanings, potentially resulting in attitudinal and affective political polarization. Although selective exposure has been well documented in both experimental and observational studies, with few exceptions, most extant research has been conducted in the United States. The high level of ideological polarization in the U.S. may be idiosyncratic from a global perspective, so cross-cultural investigation is necessary for assessing the generalizability of the findings. This panel specifically focuses on the relationship of social media use and political polarization in non-U.S. contexts, broadly defined. We are particularly interested in studies examining the role of social media in political polarization in emerging democracies, semi-democracies, and authoritarian states in Asia. The topics for this panel may include, but are not limited to: 1. Survey studies on the impact of social media use on selective exposure/avoidance and consequential political polarization in the non-U.S. contexts. 2. Experimental studies testing the impact of social media use on selective exposure/avoidance and consequential political polarization in the non-U.S. contexts. 3. Cross-national studies examining the generalizability of the association between social media use and political polarization. Full papers for the workshop are due on February 15, 2018 and should have a length of 6,000-8,000 words (excluding tables, figures, and references). To ensure the integrity of the double-blind peer-review for submissions to this conference, every effort should be made to prevent the identities of the authors being known to reviewers. The deadline for all three volumes is February 12, 2018. *CITAMS@30 * This special anniversary volume commemorates the 30th anniversary of the CITAMS section. Submissions are welcome that explore any topic relevant to the thirty-year section history or the future of the section in years to come. Topics include but are not limited to communication, information technologies, and media sociology. Guest editors are Wenhong Chen and Barry Wellman. * Call for Theorizing the Digital: Social Theory and Digital Culture* We welcome submissions using a wide variety of data and analytic techniques, assuming they are rigorously employed. We also welcome theoretical submissions, assuming they focus squarely on the topic of the volume. Methodological papers will be considered as long as they are grounded in theoretical concerns. The scope of the volume is wide and includes application of classical and contemporary theorists in media contexts. Any topic that engages the volume’s theme is welcome. The scope of this volume is wide, as it aims to contribute phenomenological and epistemic knowledge to the growing field of intersectionality. Submissions are welcome on any topics that speak to intersectionality as it relates to media including gender, race/ethnicity, class, sexuality, and ability. The conference is an interdisciplinary gathering of social media researchers, practitioners, and analysts from around the world. The 2018 conference is hosted by the Centre for Business Data Analytics at the Copenhagen Business School. In 2012, in the wake of Occupy and the Arab Spring, the #SMSociety community explored networked influence and virality, and saw social media and viral events as a democratizing force. Fast forward five years and we find ourselves in quite a different, some would argue, darker social media landscape where those same democratizing forces are now being exploited in ways we could not foresee. With the rapid change on social media platforms and their affordances, the heightened emphasis on mobile and visual communication, the rise of bots, and the increased participation of state actors, we believe it is time to revisit the ideas of Networked Influence and Virality once more! Powered by networked influence and made possible by privately owned social media platforms, we are said to be in a sharing economy. We are now owning less and sharing more, giving and receiving crowdsourced content, adapting, innovating, remaking, and re-sharing original and remixed materials. New attitudes, practices, and legal precedents about ownership, rights, and information evaluation are emerging with the growing use of social media. The joys of sharing and connecting through social media-as amateur music videos inspire responses and the sharing of cute animal videos brings joy to millions-are tempered with concerns about the manipulation and exploitation of social media platforms. Hateful, anti-social speech, coordinated misinformation campaigns (i.e. "fake news") and "false flag" operation by actors unknown now dominate the news cycle and compete for an opportunity to "go viral." Considering the rapid changes in social media environments, use, and users, the conference organizers invite scholarly and original submissions that relate to the 2018 theme of "Networked Influence and Virality." We welcome both quantitative and qualitative work which crosses interdisciplinary boundaries and expands our understanding of the current and future trends in social media research, especially those that explore some of the questions and issues raised below: * How do ideas spread online? What are the outcomes of the viral spread of news, memes, content, and creative production? * Who are the new influencers and power players in the information landscape of social media? * How important are bots in this landscape? How do bots act as social actors? In what ways are they transforming social media? * Algorithmic filtering is now the norm on all major social media platforms; how has their implementation changed the user experience? * What are the impacts of misinformation and propaganda on elections, commerce, and the attention economy? * Is faster, frictionless communication still an ideal to strive for or have we gone too far? Do we need to reintroduce some frictions back to social media platforms? * How do corporate interests, activities, sales, and profit motivations drive or otherwise affect sharing practices? * What are the characteristics of contemporary social media practices that drive the need for new laws, sharing conventions, censorship, rights to be heard and to be forgotten? * Do social media users understand, or are they even aware of, the ethical considerations related to sharing, and re-mixing content on social media? * How do users evaluate information received through social media? * How does viral culture affect policy, power dynamics, corporations, activists, and personal interests? * What new methodologies, tools, and frameworks can researchers bring to bear in studying the flow of information on social media? * How do sharing, memes, and viral events contribute to theory-building about our society? >From its inception, the International Conference on Social Media & Society Conference (#SMSociety) has focused on the best practices for studying the impact and implications of social media on society. Our invited academic and industry keynotes have highlighted the shifting questions and concerns for the social media research community. From introducing media multiplexity and networked individualism with Caroline Haythornthwaite and Barry Wellman in 2010 and 2011, to measuring influence with Gilad Lotan and Sharad Goel in 2012 and 2013, to defining social media research as a field with Keith Hampton in 2014, to identifying our commitments as social media researchers in policy making with Bill Dutton in 2015, to exploring the future of social media technologies with John Weigelt in 2015, to highlighting the challenges of social media data mining in the context of big data with Susan Halford and Helen Kennedy in 2016; and more recently discussing the dark side of social media with Lee Rainie and Ron Deibert in 2017.
