Learning more about social media analytics

Hello, I’m interested in learning more about social media analytics. I’ve already taken the excellent introduction by Jean Burgess and Alex Burns through the FutureLearn site where they focus on data collection and analysis via TAGS, Tableau and Gephi. Dear Colleagues, I want to bring your attention to two opportunities to participate in this year's International Federation of Information Processing’s 24th World Congress (http://wcc2018.put.poznan.pl) held in Poznan, Poland from 17 to 21 September 2018. The first opportunity is a workshop sponsored by the Human Choice and Computers Technical Committee (TC 9) and is entitled “This Changes Everything” (http://hcc13.net) Although there will be several groups with various themes represented at this workshop, I most want to bring your attention to the track devoted to the history of computing (http://ifipwg97.org/workshops/hcc13/) The deadline for draft papers is at the end of this month. Secondly, IFIP's History of Computing Working Group (WG 9.7) is sponsoring a separate workshop covering Histories of Computing in Eastern Europe (http://ifipwg97.org/workshops/eastern-europe/) In addition to traditional paper sessions, this workshop will feature a remote demonstration of the Bomba created by Alan Turing. In order to honor the effort of Polish cryptographers during the war, a message enciphered using Enigma coding will be transmitted to Bletchley Park, decoded using the replica Bombe, and sent back to Poznan. The deadline for draft papers to be considered for this workshop is 1 May 2018. Please consider being a part of either or both of these workshops. Do they participate in world-making, and if so how? Could they be utilised not just to close discussions, but also to open up public debate, imagination and experimentation? ## Long abstract This panel is about the world-making capacities of emerging data infrastructures – including their epistemic, social and political possibilities and limitations. It examines how emerging data infrastructures may distribute and redistribute participation in knowledge and world-making across society and culture – from the platform data of big technology companies to open data from public institutions, citizen data, sensor data and associated forms of journalism and activism. How are digital technologies entangled with social practices of classifying, counting, reasoning, narrating and making decisions? Rather than just extending the reach of certain pre-authorised ways of knowing, seeing and dealing with things, how might digital technologies support more substantive forms of interactivity and participation in order to open up public conversations, imagination and experimentation about how data is made and put to work? One of the key strengths of research methods and design approaches developed across STS, participatory design and digital social research has always been their experimentality – the ways in which they seek to combine knowing and doing – representing and intervening in social life – in potentially new, creative ways. This session asks: What distinctive forms of engagement with data infrastructures do these methods and approaches enable, and what is their capacity to contribute to data world-making? Call for participation: CHI 2018 workshop on HCI for blockchain

*CHI 2018 workshop: HCI for Blockchain: Studying, Designing, Critiquing and Envisioning Distributed Ledger Technologies* This workshop aims to develop a community and agenda within the CHI community to address the emergence of blockchain, and distributed ledger technologies (DLTs). As blockchains rapidly emerge as a general purpose technology, they present exciting, and interdisciplinary, challenges and opportunities for developing new ways for networks of people and things to transact, collaborate, organize and identify themselves. The format of the workshop will be structured firstly around a series of panels, related to: - Studying applications of blockchains - Critiquing blockchains - Designing for and with blockchain technologies - Envisioning blockchain futures These panels will create a space for attendees to present and discuss their work, sharing expertise, as well as common experiences and challenges. Secondly, the workshop will transform these discussions into an active agenda for future HCI research, through a series of working groups to address specific issues and interests. Participants are asked to submit a 3-6 page position papers (in CHI Extended Abstract format, as PDF) – by email to hciforblockchain(a)outlook.com by 26 January 2018 – presenting aspects of their own work (or work-in-progress) relevant to the four core themes of the workshop, and areas of interest described in the proposal. CALL FOR PAPERS PRESENCE 2018 18th conference of the International Society for Presence Research (ISPR) Prague, Czech Republic May 21-22, 2018 (optional demonstrations and guided sightseeing events May 20) https://ispr.info/call-presence-2018 Conference theme: Challenges Submission deadline: February 20, 2018 OVERVIEW Telepresence, often shortened to presence, is a state or perception in which we overlook or misconstrue the role of technology and feel present in the environments and/or connected to the people or things we experience via technology. It´s increasingly relevant to a wide range of media experiences and application areas. Following a series of 17 successful Presence conference events (http://ispr.info/presence-conferences/previous-conferences/) PRESENCE 2018 will retain the single-track format and enjoyable social environment of previous conferences while featuring an expanded variety of paper and poster sessions, panel discussions, keynote presentations, hands-on demonstrations of presence applications/services/projects, and informal discussion, networking and fun. Members of both academic and industry communities are welcome. At the end of the first day, all attendees are invited to a social dinner; we also hope you´ll join us for all or part of a day of demonstration visits and guided sightseeing on May 20 (the day before the conference). The registration cost is $140, with a discounted student cost of $100. The fee includes lunches on both days, coffee and snacks during breaks, and the social dinner. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The term presence has many formal and informal meanings but is used by a growing interdisciplinary scholarly community to refer to experiences in which technology is overlooked or misconstrued in some way during a mediated experience. Long a focus of those who study virtual reality and environments, it´s increasingly relevant to a wide range of media experiences. For example, presence occurs when we get "lost" in the world of a novel, TV show, movie, video game or theme park ride; we´re convinced by the realism of paintings or graphic designs; we treat our cars, computers or other machines as if they have personalities of their own, and we feel like we´re "with" a person we talk to on the phone or in a video conference. The presence research community has been working to identify causes, characteristics and consequences of diverse presence experiences. The consequences identified so far - including arousal/relaxation, empathy, enjoyment, persuasion and more - make clear the importance and power of presence to improve communication across a wide variety of contexts and applications of interest to scholars and those who create media technologies and content. Presence as a concept and set of phenomena is related to the work being done in nearly every field and business sector from art to zoology, with particularly direct applications in business, education, entertainment and health. The 4000+ posts in ISPR Presence News (http://ispr.info/posts) and thousands more on its predecessor, the presence-l listserv (listserv.temple.edu/archives/presence-l.html) along with the Presence Bibliography on the ISPR website (http://ispr.info) illustrate the breadth of presence applications, and the breadth, depth and value of presence scholarship. The objectives of the conference are to deepen and update the knowledge of those already familiar with presence and introduce new scholars and practitioners to the centrality, pervasiveness, and value of presence phenomena, theory and research. The overarching goal is to help integrate and increase collaborative scholarship on presence. SUBMISSIONS Topics We seek original, high quality papers and demonstrations that contribute to our collective understanding of presence phenomena and applications in any/every aspect of life. While the scale of problematic online content makes a stronger move reasonable, taking down content through automated means can be risky for online expression and access to information. Amid an obscure use of AI-systems, opaque implementation, vague definitions and a lack of accountability, governments and policy-makers are heavily pressuring companies to take action. And a few EU members states have already responded with new regulatory initiatives. The Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) and Access Now will host a workshop on technological advancements, the extent of Artificial intelligence deployment and the range of approaches to understanding the status and future impact of AI systems to govern social communication on the internet. We invite experts from different fields and backgrounds to participate in the discussion on March 20, 2018 in Berlin. If you would like to participate in the workshop, we ask you to apply with an expression of interest being announced below. Expert Workshop: The turn to artificial intelligence in governing communication online HIIG | Französische Str. 9 | 10117 Berlin 20 March 2018 | 9am – 6pm Themes The workshop will be organized around three problem-oriented questions in order to map challenges of this development: • Who are the primary agents of the socio-technical change to artificial intelligence in content moderation? • How is the turn to AI influenced (e.g. governance instruments)? • Why is the process of change accepted, or not? Sessions will be chaired by known experts who will provide inputs and facilitate interaction among all participants. Participants As the emerging issues transcend disciplinary boundaries and perspectives, workshop participants will have diverse backgrounds.The workshop particularly aims at the exchange between academics and non-academics. It will bring researchers and practitioners from key countries in Europe together. We are looking forward to receiving applications from researchers from all disciplines, members of interest groups and NGOs, as well as practitioners (business, technology) with expertise in artificial intelligence and automation systems in the context of content moderation and the global governance of communication online.
