Liz’s research focuses on mental health and dementia in primary care and community settings, with a particular focus on novel methods for using electronic health data such as patient records. 3. 'You can't manage what you can't measure' Jo-Anne Welsh, CEO, Oasis Project. Jo-Anne qualified as a general nurse many years ago. Her career has included working in both acute and community settings and in the voluntary and statutory sector. Throughout her career she has been interested in health inequalities and has worked in both HIV services and for the last 12 years in Substance Misuse provision. Jo-Anne was awarded a Wellcome Fellowship for a project exploring attachment and how it relates to clients' experiences in 2016. 4. ‘Enhancing public engagement with health data through art practice’ Dr. Aristea Fotopoulou, Principal Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Media and Communications in the School of Media, University of Brighton. Aristea is a UKRI/AHRC Innovation Leadership Fellow whose research focuses on social transformations that relate to digital media and data-driven technologies. Moderator: Rifa Thorpe-Tracey (@rifa), an events organiser, coach, producer and advocate for inclusivity in tech. Rifa launched SheSays Brighton, curates Spring Forward Festival, runs Refigure Ltd, co-hosts a weekly arts podcast and is also a yoga and meditation teacher. This event is hosted by ART/DATA/HEALTH (artdatahealth.org) an academic research project that offers members of the community new skills in data science and art practice to improve health and wellbeing. The aim of the project is to develop a participatory interface that involves creativity and use of data for the social good, in order to tackle health inequalities and digital inclusion. ‘ART/ DATA/HEALTH: data as creative material for health and wellbeing’ (AH/S004564/1 2019-2021) is funded by the UKRI-AHRC Innovation Leadership Fellowship, led by Principal Investigator Dr Aristea Fotopoulou, and hosted by the University of Brighton.

Organised for the fourteenth time in a row, RCIS 2020 will be held from May 20-22, 2020, in Limassol, Cyprus. Tutorials are intended to provide independent instruction (know-how) on a topic of relevance, no commercial or sales-oriented. Potential presenters should keep in mind that there might be a varied audience, including novice graduate students, seasoned practitioners, and specialized researchers. Tutorial speakers should be prepared to cope with this diversity. The conference has specific slots for tutorials. They will be organized in sessions of 90 minutes with a free format. Tutorials run in parallel with other conference tracks, and participation is included in the attendees' conference fee. Proven track record has to be balanced with the innovative aspect of the tutorial. In preparing your proposal, you are encouraged to include some creative techniques for teaching and learning. Global Perspectives special issue – Trust and Digital Platforms Call for papers Special Collection for the Communication and Media Section of Global Perspectives on “Trust and Digital Platforms” Estimated Timeline 1 December 2019 - 500-word abstracts * Please submit abstracts to Terry Flew (t.flew(a)qut.edu.au) and Sora Park (sora.park(a)canberra.edu.au) * 1 February 2020 - notification of invitation to submit full papers (6000-8000 words) 1 August 2020 - submission of full papers 1 December 2020 - review process complete 1 May 2021 - publication of articles Trust and Digital Platforms As online activities and experiences are increasingly mediated through digital platforms, a series of scandals and ‘public shocks’ (Ananny & Gillespie, 2017) have raised concerns about privacy and security, the misuse of user data, algorithmic biases, and the public distribution of objectionable and sometimes abhorrent content through the internet (Flew, Martin, & Suzor, 2019). Legislators and regulators in many countries are now engaged in public enquiries and the development of new laws to apply public interest standards to digital platforms, as First Amendment arguments about freedom of online expression and claims that the platforms are simply intermediaries are increasingly under challenge (Napoli, 2019). This special issue proposes to view such questions from the perspective of trust. International surveys have documented a decline in trust in social, political institutions over time, including rising distrust of the media (Edelman, 2019). Manifestations of declining public trust are variously seen in the rise of populist political movements (Norris & Ingelhart, 2019), concerns about ‘fake news’ and ‘deepfakes’ (Allcott & Gentzkow, 2017), and scandals surrounding leading public institutions, from financial institutions and digital platform companies to political parties and religious organizations. Trust is a multifaceted concept, and important contributions have been made to the field from philosophy, political science, sociology and economics, as well as communication and media studies. To take one example, the concept of a public sphere rests upon an underlying degree of trust in journalists and the organizations involved in the production and distribution of news and information (Coleman, 2012). Amidst talk about whether the concerns about the power of digital platforms and ‘surveillance capitalism’ (Zuboff, 2019) points towards ‘the end of trust’(McSweeney’s, 2019), this special issue poses questions such as: * Do communication scholars have original insights into questions of trust, and how can they draw upon other fields of scholarship around trust issues? * Is trust or distrust a concept that is empirically measurable? Are there lessons from earlier ‘social capital’ debates about how to understand relations of trust, and what is the relationship of digital technologies to trust issues? * Can government regulation address the power of digital platforms and contribute to better relations of trust between platform users and providers? What lessons can be learnt from laws passed in other jurisdictions (e.g. European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation, Germany’s Online Hate Speech laws, Singapore’s anti-Fake News laws)? * Does the global and decentralized nature of such platforms necessitate that the lead be taken by non-governmental organizations, or that the solutions will be essentially technological in nature (e.g. a combination of blockchain and artificial intelligence technologies)? * Is regulation of digital platforms best understood as being within the remit of communications policies, or are the most appropriate measures primarily related to economic policies, such as anti-trust and consumer protection laws, or by regarding digital platforms as ‘information fiduciaries’ (Balkin, 2018; Dobkin, 2018)? About the journal Global Perspectives (GP) is an online-only, peer-reviewed, transdisciplinary journal seeking to advance social science research and debates in a globalizing world, specifically in terms of concepts, theories, methodologies, and evidence bases. RCIS 2020 will continue paying attention to traditional topics at the conference; in addition, we solicit submissions aligned the special theme of Information Science in the Days of Artificial Intelligence. The Doctoral Consortium offers nice opportunities for PhD students. Firstly, the feedback received during the Doctoral Consortium will really benefit students who have defined their topic, research plan and have obtained early results, but who still have room for improving their longer-term plan. Secondly, students at all stages of their doctoral project can meet the welcoming RCIS community and widen their network of contacts. The main scope and topics of the Doctoral Consortium are the same as those of the main conference. RCIS welcomes submissions from the whole spectrum of the Information Science field. OBJECTIVES The Doctoral Consortium has the following objectives: · Provide a platform for students to present their work and to meet other peers and be familiar with different research topics and methods. · Provide feedback on students' current research and guidance on future research directions. · Promote the development of a supportive community of scholars and a spirit of collaborative research and networking. · Contribute to the conference goals through interaction with other researchers. The Doctoral Consortium is organised in sessions that are part of the RCIS 2020 conference programme. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Interested PhD students are invited to submit papers, in agreement with their supervisors, addressing the following instructions. Please bear in mind that we are not prescribing a specific structure of sections; we just expect that you cover these topics in the paper: · Introduce the field of research and identify the main challenges. · Formulate the research questions and objectives, justifying why they were chosen. · Outline the current knowledge of the problem domain, as well as the state of existing solutions. · Sketch the research methodology that is being applied. · Describe the proposed solution and the results achieved so far. · State how the suggested solution is different from or better than existing approaches. · Indicate the issues still to be resolved and describe the next steps that are planned. Papers shall be formatted according to the Springer LNCS/LNBIP conference proceedings template (for LaTeX and Word): http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… Submissions must be written in English, and must be authored by the student only. The maximum length of the paper should be eight (8) pages, including references, appendices, etc. Papers that have already been accepted or are currently under review for other conferences, workshops or journals will not be considered for publication at the RCIS 2020 Doctoral Consortium. So, while we can accept certain overlap with other papers, we discourage re- submissions and double submissions. Authors of accepted submissions will submit the camera-ready version using the same format as the initial submission (some additional instructions might be issued at this stage). The reviewers' comments shall be taken into account in the camera-ready paper. Only papers that have been presented by their author will be published in the conference proceedings. Authors will receive information on the presentation, and how to register for the conference. There will be a discounted registration fee for Doctoral Consortium students. The accepted papers will be published in a Springer LNBIP volume, along with the other papers accepted for RCIS 2020. This will give visibility to the work of the doctoral student and contribute to building their CV. By submitting a Doctoral Consortium paper, doctoral students commit that they will attend the conference to present their research. The appearance of a paper in the Springer proceedings is dependent on the registration of the author within the early registration deadline on March 31, 2020. REVIEW PROCESS The review and decision of acceptance will be based on the opinions of at least two reviewers. Several factors will be considered, including the quality of the proposal, the clarity of the paper, and the stage within the doctoral education program. The selection process will, when possible, maximise a good coverage of the topics of the conference and diversity of participants' background, research objectives, and research methods. AT THE CONFERENCE Each student will present his or her work to the participants with substantial time allowed for discussion and questions by participating researchers and other students. The discussion will be guided by a member of the committee of expert mentors, who will play the role of proposal discussant together with another PhD student that has been accepted at the Doctoral Consortium. Each student will be invited to review another accepted Doctoral Consortium paper and prepare a few questions to be discussed during the consortium day. The papers will be assigned in advance such that the students will have sufficient time to review the paper and prepare their questions. The consortium sessions will have an informal and friendly atmosphere where every participant is encouraged to be actively involved in the discussion, the core objective being to learn how to conduct excellent research, as well as provide and receive useful feedback to improve one's work. Twitter Chatbots

This one is out of my wheelhouse but maybe you know!I have a student who wants to investigate the impact Twitter chatbots have on framing political conversations, driving specific discussions, and determining voter intentions. His focus is the Brexit referendum. He wants to first classify tweets as coming from bots and then measure the impact of the tweets using three elements: strength of network connection: how important the influencing group of people or their status are to you; Immediacy of network connection: how close the group are to you (physical distance and time) at the time of the influence attempt; number: How many people are present in the environment. I can foresee some challenges but like I say, this type of analysis is very much outside of my specialism. This is an ambitious student so before I recommend an alternative approach: Is there a strategy anyone can recommend that will allow him to correctly classify tweets as coming from bots?
