Call for Papers: ‘gender and transnational media’ *A special issue of Feminist Media Studies* Co-edited by Jilly Boyce Kay (School of Media, Communication and Sociology, University of Leicester, UK) & Justine Lloyd (Department of Sociology, Macquarie University, Australia) *Forthcoming June 2021 (see full info on all dates below)* As Michele Hilmes has recently argued, broadcasting, while being heavily controlled by nation-states from its inception in the early twentieth century, had an unprecedented cultural capacity to transgress and defy national borders. In this aspect, the legacy of broadcasting is a transnational cultural economy that continues into the present (Hilmes 2012: 2). As Hilmes goes onto describe, the role of gender in these transnational media circuits is potentially politically disruptive. Contestations over gender have not only added to growing pressures on elite cultures and established power dynamics, but have intersected with other important struggles, to the extent that popular media have become “a means of acknowledging and addressing [inequalities] while uniting the citizenry not only within national boundaries but across them” (Hilmes 2012: 84). This special issue therefore extends from Hilmes’ historical focus on transnationalism’s role within the broadcasting cultures of the UK and USA. It builds on recent scholarship on transnational gendered media cultures (Sreberny 2001; Kim 2010, Mankekar 2015, Hegde 2014) and visibilities (Hegde 2011), including within Feminist Media Studies (for example, Imre et al. 2009), to bring together recent scholarship that works against the grain of national histories. This special issue of Feminist Media Studies will profile work on media from scholars inside and outside the academy. We are particularly interested in papers which consider how mediated practices intersect with political contexts and afford diverse kinds of interventions in issues of social justice. We welcome abstracts engaging with transnational media and gender including in the following contexts: · Social media and transnational feminism · Gendered cultural forms within transnational activist networks · Transnational film cultures and feminist praxis · Decolonisation and gender as explored in media · Circulation of gendered images and affects within and outside national polities · Translations of gender and genre across regional media markets · Indigenous and first nations media and questions of gender · Critiques of contemporary forms of orientalism within global media cultures from a gendered perspective As well as engaging with the special issue’s theme all articles must (a) comply with the general submission requirements, (b) address the central concerns of the journal, which is to bring together scholars, professionals and activists from around the world to engage with feminist issues and debates in media and communication, and (c) be of relevance to a wide international and multidisciplinary readership (see below for the Journal’s aims and scope). *Key dates: * · 30 November 2019: deadline for abstracts (350 words) and biographical note (200 words) · mid-December 2019: authors notified of outcome of abstracts and some invited to submit full articles. The two-day conference will be held at RMIT in Melbourne, 27-28 May 2020. The post-ICA 2020 conference brings CIRC to the southern hemisphere for the first time in its history since its inception in 2003. It will be jointly hosted by media and/or communication studies programs and schools in some of Australia’s most innovative universities. It also welcomes papers that examine new dynamics and emerging trends related to Chinese Internet and digital culture/economy/politics from a comparative perspective—both historically and horizontally (with other countries). *Keynote speakers:* Yu Hong, Professor of media and communication, Zhejiang University, China Michael Keane, Professor of Chinese media, Curtin University, Australia *The Conference Theme* *“The Internationalisation of China’s Digital and Communication Industries”* In anticipation of an Asian century (Khanna, 2019), Chinese technology has become increasingly more assertive (Lee, 2018), approximating a tech cold war. China’s internationalization strategies of their digital and communication industries are systematic and comprehensive as evidenced by their artificial intelligence ambitions and the “Digital Silk Road Initiative” (Shen, 2018: Fung et al, 2018; Keane & Yu, 2019; Shi, 2018). These policy interventions have helped advance Chinese tech, media, and digital platforms “over the wall”, if more often through parallel platform strategies, whether social media platforms (WeChat, Kuaishou, Douyin/TikTok), E-commerce models and online payment (Alipay, AliExpress, ‘Taobao Village’), digital and mobile technology (Xiaomi, Huawei), or its big data industry. Yet, while promising a ‘fairer’ Internet and a ‘cyber community of shared destiny’ (to use Chinese President Xi’s words), these policies promote the interests of Chinese cyber sovereignty and an alternative cyber order advanced by the Chinese Internet (Yang, 2003, 2012). China’s expansion of its digital footprint, advance in digital capacity and AI technology, and soft power ambition have caused unease among international competitors and are regarded as ‘threat’ by the US-led ‘Western’ alliance, as witnessed in the Huawei 5G ban in the U.S and Australia, forced sale of the gay dating app Grindr in the US, and accusation of TikTok violations of cultural norms and regulatory policies in India, Malaysia, and the U.S. Even as China’s media content has flourished domestically and among the Chinese diasporas, efforts to enter Western mainstream geo-cultural markets have proven challenging if not impossible (Sun 2015), even with more genre-driven fare (*The Wandering Earth*) or the delayed “soft launch” of video portals (Lotz 2019) like IQiyi into southeast Asian markets. We are delighted to announce the Call for Papers for our next conference at the Data Justice Lab themed: Civic Participation in the Datafied Society Date: May 28-29, 2020 Location: Cardiff University in Cardiff, UK. Host: Data Justice Lab As the generation, collection and analysis of data continues to transform key aspects of our society across economics, politics and culture, the question of participation has rarely been so pertinent. Democratic processes and traditional avenues for participation are facing challenges as state-citizen relations are increasingly shaped through data analytics and automation at the same time as alternative visions for participatory democracy and decision-making have proliferated. As citizens, we are said to be both coerced and active participants in this shift, both liberated and exploited in the use of digital tools, both more visible and more obscured in data-driven systems. How, then, should we understand civic participation in the datafied society? In what ways are we positioned as citizens in the advancement of datafication? How are decisions made, governance carried out, and systems created? What possibilities exist to intervene in, influence, create and resist power? Who gets to participate and on what terms? How might our institutions and government practices need to change? What are strategies for democratising the emergent datafied society? And what are avenues for enhancing citizen and community participation? This two-day event explores the relationship between datafication and participation. Hosted by the Data Justice Lab at Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Culture (JOMEC), it will bring together international scholars, practitioners, activists, and community groups to discuss the possibilities and challenges of civic participation in a datafied society. We therefore welcome alternative formats and ideas.
