The successful candidate will work as a post-doctoral researcher (remuneration at TVL 13 or 14, according to qualification, plus support for family, literature, and travel expenses, fixed-term contract for up to 33 months) in the EU H2020 research project “Rethinking Digital Copyright Law for a Culturally Diverse, Accessible, Creative Europe” (National PI: Dr. Christian Katzenbach), and will be part of the research group “The Evolving Digital Society: Concepts, Discourses, Materialities”. The research team at the HIIG will complete – in close collaboration with international partners – a work package that addresses the role of intermediaries and platforms in regulating copyright and re-ordering cultural practices. You can expect the following tasks: • The successful candidate will develop and implement the empirical case studies (private ordering of platforms; content moderation; upload-filtering; impact on creative practices) in the H2020 project, take responsibility for the operative execution of the project, lead data collection and analysis, and contribute to the dissemination of results. • Close collaboration with international project partners from different disciplines (mainly law, humanities, and computer science) • Contributions to project management and coordination with the consortium • Contributions to research proposals and to the acquisition of third-party funding in order to facilitate the sustainable development of a research agenda on platform governance. • The successful candidate is expected to publish in top-rated journals and open-access outlets and to give presentations at national and international conferences. • The post-doctoral researcher will guide student assistants and support the directors and the principal investigator.We expect a commitment to outreach and transfer activities that offer both stakeholders and the broader public accessible ways to engage with the project and the research results.There are no teaching obligations attached to this position, but teaching arrangements can be made with Berlin’s universities. Disrupting technology: contextualising continuity and change in technology, work and employment 16-17th January 2020, Centre for Employment Relations Innovation and Change, University of Leeds (Newlyn Building) Recent scholarship on the relationship between technology and work has often tended to accentuate new technologies’ supposed transformative effects. Conferences on work and employment often feature streams dedicated solely to new technologies – such as platforms or AI – segregated from other streams where technology is mentioned very little. This both narrows our understandings of what constitutes ‘technology’ and contributes to the renewed growth of technological determinism, both in its utopian or dystopian variants- from Fully Automated Luxury Communism” on one hand to a nightmare of total surveillance on the other. Such debates are often speculative and can serve to obscure how actually existing employment relations are being shaped by new technologies. The Centre for Employment Relations, Innovation and Change (CERIC) at Leeds University Business School is pleased to announce a call for papers for a two day event in January 2020 relating to these questions. This workshop calls for more careful, empirically grounded, theorisations of technology, its novelty and its impact on work and employment relations. We ask that contributions recognise the influence of conflicted interests and actions by managers, workers, the state and other social actors on the patterns, processes and outcomes of technological innovation. By devoting more attention to contextualising and historicising the relationship between technology and work, we ask contributors to develop more critical accounts of the extent of transformation and disruption, vis-à-vis entrenchment or continuity of existing social relations and employment relationships. Beyond the technology itself, what is genuinely novel and transformative about automation, AI or ‘platformisation’, which more mundane technologies might we be missing from the analysis? We welcome contributions of themes including: 1. The state, regulation and new technology 2. Historical research on the introduction of new technologies of work 3. Management, resistance, organization, and technology 4. Occupations, skills, professions, and technology 5. Inequalities (race, gender, (dis)ability) and technology 6. Dates: Thursday 4 and Friday 5 June 2020 https://sites.google.com/view/ics2020conference/home The development of young people’s identities and sense of selfhood is widely recognized as being a social activity undertaken through interaction and feedback with significant others. Advancing beyond earlier top-down models of socialization, whereby parents and teachers were largely seen as responsible for transmitting stable cultural norms, knowledge, political attitudes, religious beliefs and social practices to young people, contemporary understanding has instead foregrounded the active, dynamic, co-construction of young selves. Such approaches have not only drawn attention to the active engagement of young people in shaping their own identities but has also emphasized the wider social, political, economic, cultural contexts that frame the possibilities for the interactive realization of personhood. Most profoundly, and the focus of this international symposium, for the current generation of young people, the active construction of self is significantly mediated by and through a digital media ecology of communications networks, algorithms and platforms. These emergent networked environments have led to celebrations about the potential to enhance the development of young selves through wider access to knowledge, cultures, beliefs, identities and the opportunities to perform such self-formation through online interaction with diverse others. But it has also produced moral panics for those concerned about the perceived negative effects of digital media, such as attention deficit, the break-down of authority, dumbing down of education, infantilizing politics, and the weakening of traditional family ties. Premised upon a notion of youth as a social construction, as well as upon its permeability, and taking into account how young people - whether as young children, tweens, teenagers, or late twentysomething, whether in the West or outside of it- are growing up with significant access to globalized media and transmedia platforms and narratives, this two-day international symposium will critically investigate the issues presented by the construction of young selves within the contemporary digital media ecology. With the aim to grasp the complexity and diversity of most young people’s experiences and practices with online technologies, we invite original research findings and theoretical analysis addressing (though not exclusively) such questions as: • What role for young people do traditional markers of identity such as social class, religion, family, or geography play in online group interaction? • As increasingly more young people find themselves geographically dispersed and living transitional lives in immigrant communities or in refugee camps, what kind of possibilities for connectedness, dialogue and identity-making online technologies have to offer? • What value are social media platforms for gay, transgender, queer, atheist, or differently abled young people as spaces for socialization? • How much are young people’s political norms and engagement practices facilitated by digital communication? • How does everyday online engagement affect interaction between young people and significant others such parents, teachers and other traditional ‘authority’ figures? • Does social networking influence learning practices, competencies or curriculum design? • What are young people’s attitudes and actual use of digital media in everyday life? • How should we assess the significance of celebrity culture for young people’s development of self? • Are young people more likely to develop a transnational outlook as a consequence of the digital media ecology? interview transcription software

Hi All, I hope you had a wonderful time in Australia. Sorry to have missed it. I am beginning a round of about 90 interviews, most of which I will do using video-conferencing software Zoom (low background noise and decent audio quality). Last time I did this five years ago, I paid Rev to do the bulk of the transcription. Now, I am wondering if voice-to-text transcription software has become good enough to produce transcriptions of one-on-one interviews. I've been surfing and seeing services like Temi or wreally, and I am wondering if any of you have had success (or failures) with this kind of software. I am not doing any sort of hyper-close linguistic analysis, so I don't need the transcripts to be absolutely perfect. Software would save a lot of money, but I also don't want to waste time if the results are going to be too shoddy to use. Thoughts? Preferred software? Thank you in advance. Below is the Call for Papers from the Human-Machine Communication Interest Group. Deadline is 16:00 UTC, 1 Nov. 2019. The HMC Interest Group welcomes submissions focused on the many aspects of the creation of meaning between humans and technologies designed to enact the role of communicator and the implications of people’s interactions with these technologies for individuals, organizations, and society. Relevant topics also include the study of the development and design of technologies as communicative subjects; the integration of these technologies into media-related industries (e.g., automated journalism); the augmentation of the body with technology (e.g., human augmentics); cultural discourse surrounding technologies that function as communicators; and the historical, philosophical, theoretical, and methodological development of HMC as a distinct subfield of communication. Papers regarding topics not specified here but directly related to the focus of the Interest Group are also welcome. Authors are encouraged, but not required, to engage with the conference theme of “Open Communication.” Submissions are welcome from the various theoretical and methodological approaches to communication research. Authors are encouraged to clearly state the aims/goals of the paper and how they will be achieved; to articulate how their work relates and contributes to HMC and communication research; and to clearly and completely explain theoretical and methodological aspects of their work. Authors should select specific keywords that describe the type of manuscript being submitted, the subject of the manuscript, and the approach and method used. Call for Visiting Scholars at UNNC

Dear colleagues, The School of International Communications at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) invites applications for our inaugural Visiting Scholars programme. This position includes visa, transportation, accommodation, and a research stipend, and will be held for 2-3 months during the Spring/Summer term (between February 17th and July 15th, 2020, at the applicant’s discretion). The aim of this award is to foster research collaboration with members of staff in the School. During the residency, the scholar will undertake their research and collaborate with one or more members of IC staff on a research project (proposed by the Visiting Scholar) that will result in a publication or a grant application. They will also deliver one lecture for our School’s UG and PG students and will give one presentation to the wider University on their research as part of our Invited Speakers programme. AoIR 2019 reflections

Hi all, Following last week's tremendous AoIR 2019, I've cobbled together some reflections, which you'll find below. These may be of interest for those who couldn't make it, or perhaps even for those who could. Cheers Sacha Sacha Molitorisz, PhD Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Centre for Media Transition Faculty of Law University of Technology Sydney Last week I flew to Brisbane for my very first Association of Internet Researchers Conference<https://aoir.org/aoir2019/>, where I learnt three things. One, people in Brisbane don't jaywalk. Two, internet researchers look cool, complete with piercings, tattoos and blue hair. And three, internet researchers are not very positive about the internet. In her keynote address, Macquarie University's Professor Bronwyn Carlson<https://www.mq.edu.au/about_us/faculties_and_departments/faculty_of_arts/de…> detailed the torrent of abuse and vilification that Indigenous Australians cop on social media. Of course, she said, there are benefits too, including for Indigenous sufferers of depression and anxiety, who can connect with others. But on balance, she said, social media is hugely destructive. If she could, she said, she'd pull the plug. On Thursday, Dr Sal Humphreys<https://researchers.adelaide.edu.au/profile/sal.humphreys> from the University of Adelaide was glum too. Her research explored whether it's possible for companies to engage in ethical data practice while remaining commercially viable. This wasn't speculative. She was researching on behalf of a company building smartphone games offering in-app purchases, including to children. And her short answer? No. Why act ethically if competitors gain an advantage by acting unethically? Surveillance capitalism wins. "I just don't have any optimism in me about this," Humphreys said. This year's AoIR conference was the 20th. Over those two decades, the internet has changed radically, and changed radically again. I can only guess the mood at AoIR has changed radically too. The people who have spent their lives studying the internet now have big concerns. As several participants noted, it's a question of power. Does the internet serve us, or do we serve it? And if it does serve us, which version of us does it serve? The best version of ourselves, or something more base? On Saturday, Megan Lindsay Brown revealed research showing the connection between tech-based abuse (such as cyberstalking) and real world violence. Partners in an abusive relationship tend to find it hard to leave; tech can make that separation even more difficult. And scholars including Matt Beard, Terry Flew, Tarleton Gillespie and Stuart Cunningham addressed various emerging challenges in regulating digital speech and digital platforms. How do we classify platforms? What laws do we need? But there were lighter moments too. Nancy Baym from Microsoft Research and Limor Shifman from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem revealed their findings about Clippy memes, such as this one. It was a fun session, although, as they said, a joke is never just a joke. Clippy memes often reveal serious concerns about the creepiness of digital assistants. And Stefano Brilli delivered a paper about pornographic exchanges on Italian private group chats. On some of these sites, he said, you can be banned for blasphemy. Hardcore is fine; disrespecting the deity is not. Out of it all, though, there was one bright ray of optimism. And that's the collaborative spirit of the researchers, who revealed a consistent commitment to sharing ideas, furthering knowledge and improving the net, and through it the world. In my case, this was particularly true of Charles Ess<https://uio.academia.edu/CharlesEss>. He's a giant of digital media ethics, so you might expect someone preoccupied, if not aloof. Instead, he turned out to be unfailingly helpful and personable. In its early years, the internet was touted as the ultimate expression of people power. Sadly, it isn't always turning out that way. But at least the researchers who study it still embody that democratising spirit. And in that vein, a huge shout out to the wonderful efforts of Jonathan Hutchinson, Axel Bruns, Jean Burgess, Terry Flew and everyone else at QUT and AoIR who hosted and organised. As Tama Leaver noted in a tweet, "Airport bound, thanks to everyone at #AoIR2019<https://twitter.com/hashtag/AoIR2019?src=hashtag_click> for confirming that it's never just a conference, it's a community". Indeed, and community is just what the net needs now.
