INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL INTERACTION SECTION REGIONAL CONFERENCE (ECREA) October 14 - October 16, 2019 Tilburg, the Netherlands The ICSI Regional Conference is the 6th bi-annual meeting of the Interpersonal Communication and Social Interaction (ICSI) section of ECREA (European Communication Research and Education Association). This year’s conference is hosted by Tilburg University, Department of Communication and Cognition, and will be held in Tilburg, the Netherlands. http://www.icsi2019.nl<http://www.icsi2019.nl/> The conference theme this year is "Re-Connecting". We want to connect scholars from the different sub-disciplines of interpersonal communication and social interaction, for example workplace interaction, communication in interpersonal relationship, impression management, interpersonal health communication. Connecting our insights from different fields may inform our own research, provide creative ideas for future research, and help theory development. Moreover, the theme reflects the fact that our mediated and unmediated interactions are increasingly connected and integrated. As advanced communication technologies increasingly become part of our everyday experience, we are forced to revisit and connect theories of online and offline social interaction. Call for Nominations: SHOT SIGCIS Mahoney Prize for an Article in the History of Computing and Information Technology

The Mahoney Prize recognizes an outstanding article in the history of computing and information technology, broadly conceived. The Mahoney Prize commemorates the late Princeton scholar Michael S. Mahoney, whose profound contributions to the history of computing came from his many articles and book chapters. The prize consists of a $500 award and a certificate. For the 2019 prize, articles published in the preceding three years (2016, 2017, and 2018) are eligible for nomination. The Mahoney Prize is awarded by the Special Interest Group in Computers, Information, and Society (SIGCIS) and is presented during the annual meeting of our parent group, the Society for the History of Technology. The deadline for submission for the 2019 Mahoney Prize is *May 1, 2019*. Nominated articles should be sent via email to each member of the committee. The Computer History Museum Prize is awarded to the author of an outstanding book in the history of computing broadly conceived, published during the prior three years. The prize of $1,000 is awarded by SIGCIS, the Special Interest Group for Computers, Information and Society. SIGCIS is part of the Society for the History of Technology. In 2012 the prize was endowed in perpetuity through a generous bequest from the estate of Paul Baran, a legendary computer innovator and entrepreneur best known for his work to develop and promote the packet switching approach on which modern networks are built. Baran was a longtime supporter of work on the history of information technology and named the prize to celebrate the contributions of the Computer History Museum to that field. *2019 Call for Submission* Books published in 2016-2018 are eligible for the 2019 award. Books in translation are eligible for three years following the date of their publication in English. Publishers, authors, and other interested members of the computer history community are invited to nominate books. Specifically, we invite submissions that analyze or utilize spatial media so as to rethink and re-present distributions of capital, power, and privilege in historical, contemporary, and speculative contexts. We center “mapping” as an organizing theme for understanding and engaging social (in)justice because of its expanding role in literally and metaphorically arranging contemporary life. The everyday adoption of new spatial media—such as web-based mapping platforms, geosocial applications, and locative data—increasingly orient how society understands the past, experiences the present, and plans for the future. To map social justice and injustice is to consider how spatial media can help draw together dichotomies such as medium/method, art/science, and ontology/epistemology so as to trace, represent, and rework matters of inequity. This symposium thus encourages submissions that explore structural inequities in or through spatial media, especially as they relate to matters of difference—such as race, gender, class, ethnicity, ability, sexuality, and religion. We also encourage submissions that utilize digital mapping to spatially represent historically marginalized perspectives through empirical, textual, archival, participatory, and/or pedagogical methods. Such tasks are commonly related to user authentication, human interaction proofs (e.g., captcha), privacy and security pop-up dialogs, setting privacy and security features within online user profiles, etc. Recent privacy and security incidents of famous online services have once more underpinned the necessity towards further investigating and improving current approaches and practices related to the design of efficient and effective privacy and security. In order to achieve this objective, one possible direction is related to providing adaptive and personalized characteristics to privacy- and security-related user tasks, given the diversity of the user characteristics (like cultural, cognitive, age, habits), the technology (like standalone, mobile, mixed-virtual-augmented reality, wearables) and interaction contexts of use (like being on the move, social settings, spatial limitations). Hence, adaptive and personalized privacy and security implies the ability of an interactive system or service to support its end-users, who are engaged in privacy- and/or security-related tasks, based on user models which describe in a holistic way what constitutes the user’s physical, technological and interaction context in which computation takes place. APPS 2019 aims to bring together researchers and practitioners working on diverse topics related to understanding and improving the usability of privacy and security software and systems, by applying user modeling, adaptation and personalization principles. The workshop will address the following objectives: - increase our understanding and knowledge on supporting usable privacy and security interaction design through novel user modeling mechanisms and adaptive user interfaces; - discuss methods and techniques for understanding user attitudes and perceptions towards privacy and security issues in various application areas; - identify human-centered models for the design, development and evaluation of adaptive and personalized privacy and security systems; - discuss methods for evaluating the impact and added value of adaptation and personalization in privacy and security systems. Hi Harel, and all, Very exciting to hear about your work - so best wishes with it - and thanks to everyone for great suggestions. The angle it sounds like you are working on - e.g. 'what theories might explain motivation to invest in making my websites/apps etc accessible for people with disabilities?' - has been a longstanding area of inquiry/interest, but fairly tricky/contested (and also often the framing was a big limitation). So I think what has happened over some years is that researchers, practitioners, and activists have sought to frame the question much more widely and deeply - hence the great work that has emerged, especially in last couple of years, on disability and technology. So this has advantage of giving overdue attention to the profound ways that disability and technology interact - which then really revolutionizes how one might approach questions of how/why accessibility is framed and happens. Melanie Yergeau’s Authoring Autism is more rhetoric than communication in its theoretical framing, but is some cutting edge stuff for communication theory. Amit Pinchevsky and John Durham Peters have also written about autism and communication from a critical, but not necessarily disability studies perspective.
