CALL FOR CONFERENCE: DIGITAL PEOPLE, DIGITAL POLITICS *May 17, 2019* *Bush House ( North East) ground floor, King's College London, Strand* *Deadline: 2nd April, 2019* We are delighted to announce that Dr. Tobias Blanke will be opening the conference and Dr. Natalie Fenton will be presenting the keynote address. Social media platforms and the internet have become a battleground for ideas and political discussion. As the importance of these digital intermediaries has grown, many questions about how to navigate the world of digital politics in a meaningful and effective way have emerged. With the controversies surrounding the 2016 United States Presidential election, Brexit, the #MeToo movement, and other democratic conflicts across the globe, it is becoming increasingly evident that these media have come to play an essential role in structuring political discourse, social movements, and collective identity. When the internet emerged as a global commodity, it came with promises of nascent forms of political engagement. Digital platforms gave people new methods of voicing common grievances, starting social movements, and creating an impetus towards a more just society. However, in recent years there is evidence of increased polarisation and even hostility in online networks. With curated news feed, echo chambers, and fake news, users can shape their own isolated online politics. This conference will investigate how social media platforms and the digital are changing the nature of political discourse, online debate, and collective action. These platforms have shaped and altered many traditional forms of political involvement, such as campaign funding, candidate representation, and pertinent debates remain as to what extent digital media is enhancing or limiting democratic processes Digital technologies have impacted politics and social engagement in a myriad of ways, so we invite submissions that breach this theme from multifarious critical and methodological approaches and from diverse contexts. The academic implications or this broad topic are numerous, as we begin to understand more deeply how digital technologies are adapting to and transforming the political world. Topics for discussion may include (but are not limited to): • The role of digital media in elections across the globe • Collective action and social movements online • Online campaigns • Alt-Right and populist politics • Free speech and liberty online • Regulation and data misuse of online political spaces • Gender and online politics • Big data and politics Abstracts are to be submitted to digitalpeople.digitalpolitics(a)gmail.com by 2nd April, 2019. Medical Rhetoric CCCC 2020 Roundtable CFP Describing and Deconstructing Rhetoric of Health and Medicine’s Commonplaces Ralph Cintron (2010) has noted that topoi or commonplaces are “storehouses of social energy” that “organize our sentiments, beliefs, and actions in the lifeworld” (p. 100). Similarly, convention chair Julie Lindquist’s CFP describes commonplaces as offering a viable way to unpack a given community’s “beliefs and values,” and, by default, commonplaces provide insight into how a field “defines and defends its borders.” Rhetoric of Health and Medicine (RHM), of course, is a growing, interdisciplinary field of study marked by what Melonçon and Scott (2018) have called “methodological mutability” or “a willingness or even obligation to pragmatically and ethically adjust aspects of methodology to the phenomena under study”; they make it clear that RHM is still very much in the process of defining its commonplaces and remains tentative about staking out borders. Still, a strong enough corpus of recognized work in RHM might suggest tacit borders to our work worth further consideration as these topoi might very well impede the important project of intentionally and thoughtfully growing the field. At the same time, RHM scholars must be mindful of the ways they are dipping into and out of related fields of study such that those fields’ commonplaces are considered or even honored. This roundtable, thus, will hope to offer insight into commonplaces that are implicit in RHM work in order to deconstruct any “borders” these might be creating and, in turn, provide guidance on how we might keep our borders fluid and open to new ideas, energies, and participation. Roundtable Objective The objective of the roundtable is to foster interactive discussions between and around these issues and among presenters and the audience. To this end, we invite proposals for modified ignite (5-minute) presentations where participants provide an overview of their primary research or a review of existing literature, discussed within the framework of commonplaces or topoi. Each presenter will be asked to conclude with a question or questions they will pose to the audience to foster discussion. Once all presenters have finished speaking, attendees will break into small groups to discuss the questions/topics presented. Prospective Topics To examine these ideas, individuals are invited to submit proposals for short (5-minute) presentations that will focus on themes and topics such as: • What commonplaces might characterize existing RHM literature, and how does your work relate to or challenge these topoi? • Using commonplaces as a framework, how does RHM interact with related disciplines, such as, for example (but certainly not limited to): disability studies, health communication, or the medical humanities? • If RHM commonplaces erupt organically, how can we be mindful of their appearance and purposeful in how we support, sustain, or interrupt them? • As RHM grows, how can we support work that will keep our borders open to a vibrant variety of perspectives? This is a nine-month, tenure-earning (assistant professor) or tenured position (associate professor or professor) that includes teaching, research, and service-based duties. The anticipated start date is August 2019. Research and teaching responsibilities include contributing to the mission of Games and Interactive Media in appropriate areas of scholarship, and working at the intersection of theory and practice. CALL FOR PAPERS: Media, Civic Participation, Social Movements, Democracy and Populism Different communication patterns (online and offline) influence individuals to have specific behaviours concerning civic participation and adherence to social movements of different ideological frameworks and scopes. As publics have the chance to channel their ideas through Internet behaviours, literature often identifies Internet as a public space that promotes collective action, and acknowledges that technology is shaping the structure and identity of social movements and ideological groups. The analysis of direct and indirect influences of media practices on civic engagement must consider that democracy is not a static concept and that such engagement is also influenced by political institutions. The media amplifies political discourses and this mediation socially constructs events. The ‘mediated engagement’ of citizens may enhance either civic involvement or political manipulation. In this special issue of the Journal Interações we propose a reflection on Media, Civic Participation, Social Movements, Democracy and Populism. *CALL FOR PAPERS:* *Connected Life 2019: Data & Disorder * Monday 24th June (Oxford) & Tuesday 25th June (London) https://connectedlife.oii.ox.ac.uk/ <https://connectedlife.oii.ox.ac.uk/> A two-day multidisciplinary conference supported by the Oxford Internet Institute (OII), London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and the Alan Turing Institute (ATI) Connected Life 2019 *Data & Disorder* will provide an engaging forum for a cross-disciplinary network of researchers from around the world to consider the broad societal implications of automated data collection, processing, and analysis in all facets of daily life. In recent years, a growing body of literature has exposed the myriad impacts of ubiquitous computing and data collection, including the reinforcement of bias through search engines and data mining, the impacts of predictive risk modelling and automated decision-making on marginalised communities, and the relationship between quantification, surveillance and precarious labour. Amidst a backdrop in which the very bounds of public life can seem to contort with an unfamiliar and frenetic energy – and in which the destabilisation of established institutions has allowed the politics of until-recently peripheral movements to creep nearer to normalisation – this student-led conference aims to provide a framework for critical reflection on the datafication of social life and order. In an effort to include diverse and uncommon perspectives from across the intellectual spectrum, the organising committee of Connected Life 2019 *Data & Disorder* welcomes proposals and expressions of interest from postgraduate students and faculty from all departments, including but not limited to business, computer science, digital humanities, economics, education, history, international relations, law, linguistics, literature, media and communications, philosophy, politics, psychology, and sociology. We further welcome the submission of proposals in a variety of formats, be they empirical, theoretical, qualitative, or quantitative in nature. *MA Data, Culture and Society* The School of Media and Communication at University of Westminster welcomes applications to its MA programme in Data, Culture and Society for September 2019 entry. We live in an age where almost everything of what we do is connected to data. Big data and datafication - the increasing transformation of multiple aspects of everyday lives into digital data - pose great opportunities but also risks for contemporary societies. The programme is part of the School's Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI) which is home to around 30 researchers and 65 doctoral students. It has been a leading centre of media and communications research in the UK for almost 30 years. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), 52 per cent of our research was judged to be “world-leading”, with 87 per cent of the total rated “internationally excellent”.
