The 15th International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC) will take place on 17 - 20 February 2020 in Dublin, Ireland. I hope you can join us! Please find below information on the theme of the conference. Collective Curation: the many hands that make data work It takes a community to raise a child, so the proverb goes, and the same applies to digital content. Many stakeholders play a role in ensuring digital objects are properly created, managed and shared. Entire research communities need to agree on standards for data sharing, for example, and actions taken by content creators and curators have a huge impact on the ability for others to find, evaluate, understand and reuse objects. Decisions can empower or marginalise communities, and records can hold great power to help restore identity, promote truth and support reconciliation. With modern technology, anyone can be a content creator and provider with a potentially worldwide audience. The original intention of the internet as trusted sites of authority exchanging data of known quality has been overtaken by the flood of content on the world wide web. In this landscape, how do we evaluate and exchange information and ensure meaningful knowledge production? How do we harness the freedom and inclusiveness of the Web while enabling effective curation? How do we ensure that content is preserved for long-term accessibility? The 15th International Digital Curation Conference takes place in Dublin in collaboration with the Digital Repository of Ireland. DRI is a certified trusted digital repository for Ireland’s social and cultural data, and is widely engaged in a host of research projects spanning digital cultural heritage, research data management, Open Science policy and training, data preservation in the humanities and social sciences, and best practices in digital archiving and open repository architecture. DRI has organised and hosted dozens of conferences large and small including its biannual conference, DPASSH (Digital Preservation in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities), and the Research Data Alliance plenary. Papers are invited to address one or more of the themes below Social, political and cultural implications of digital curation * Who controls the past, controls the future – empowering community ownership of collections and the role of records to restore justice following cultural trauma * Participatory archiving, citizen science and radical collaboration * The people behind the data – acknowledging their role, influence and bias * Climate change and digital curation – what might our work look like in 20-50 years? * Partner and prosper – how content creators and curators should come together * Community-owned and open source solutions – a way for the education sector to keep control of the scholarly commons and its intellectual output? Trust: assessing content and containers * Metrics and methods to assess, validate and communicate data quality within and across communities of use * Frameworks to certify services as trustworthy and robust * Persistence: all kinds of identifiers and their role in ensuring trust * Disruptive technologies and their role in automated verification and authentication * All that glitters is not gold – how to make and communicate appropriate selection decisions and innovative approaches to appraisal? * Rethinking repositories into active research spaces and collaborative partners * In the era of fake news, how do we trust digital content and its representations in media? Data stewardship * Data stewards, data agents, data champions and institutional units – shaping, positioning and recognising new roles * Engaging and supporting researchers: examples of co-designing solutions and interdisciplinarity * Embedding data stewardship in research ecosystems – workflows, accountability and recognition * Research assessment – crediting involvement in the creation, curation and sharing of data * Defining competencies, curricula and educational programmes to address skills gaps – for researchers, data producers, data stewards, research data management librarians and others * Networking and fora for information exchange and skills sharing across institutions * Promoting standardisation to achieve more harmonized practices * Empowering communities to define data standards and sharing agreements Preservation planning * Lessons learned from the review, evaluation and re-validation of curated content * Curation workflows: linkages between digital triage, preservation actions and archiving * Managing de-accession – when does content lose its value? * National and global approaches to addressing digital preservation challenges * Preservation at scale: how can we collaborate and partner on preservation? * Preservation challenges in the humanities, social sciences and cultural heritage * Long term preservation failures – lessons learnt * Open source technologies and open standards for long term preservation Submissions Submission types are likely to include full, peer-reviewed papers as well as shorter forms with various post-submission review and publication tracks, as well as posters on the above themes. The submission deadline for papers will be end of 31st of July; that for posters will be end of September. We also welcome workshop submissions on any relevant topic. Workshop submission requirements, deadlines and review processes are separate from those for other types of content. More details on the mix of submission types and the requirements for each track will be released by the 30th of April. Defendants of the program argued that that it would increase the efficiency and effectiveness of US drone operations, not least by enabling more accurate recognition of those who are the program’s legitimate targets and, by implication, sparing the lives of noncombatants. But this promise begs a more fundamental question: What relations of reciprocal familiarity does recognition presuppose? And in the absence of those relations, what schemas of categorization inform our readings of the Other? The focus of a growing body of scholarship, this question haunts not only US military operations but an expanding array of technologies of social sorting. Understood as apparatuses of recognition (Barad 2007: 171), Project Maven and the US program of targeted killing are implicated in perpetuating the very architectures of enmity that they take as their necessitating conditions. I close with some thoughts on how we might interrupt the workings of these apparatuses, in the service of wider movements for social justice. SPEAKER BIO Lucy Suchman is Professor of Anthropology of Science and Technology at Lancaster University in the UK. Her research interests within the field of feminist science and technology studies are focused on technological imaginaries and material practices of technology design, particularly developments at the interface of bodies and machines. Dr. Suchman’s current research extends her longstanding critical engagement with the field of human-computer interaction to contemporary warfighting, including the figurations that inform immersive simulations, and problems of “situational awareness” in remotely-controlled weapon systems. Apologies for cross-posting & please share with anybody who may be interested in this call. *** CALL FOR PARTICIPATION *** CLEF ProtestNews 2019 Extracting Protests from News Using Automated Methods https://emw.ku.edu.tr/clef-protestnews-2019/ ProtestNews 2019 is a lab that is being organized as part of the Conference and Labs of the Evaluation Forum 2019 (CLEF). The lab aims at extracting protest event information from news articles across multiple countries using machine learning (ML) and generalizable natural language processing (NLP). This is a sub-task of our ERC-funded research, which aims to generate a comparative protest databases for China, India, South Africa, Mexico and Brazil (emw.ku.edu.tr). The lab aims at facilitating research in line of improving generalizability of natural language processing systems. Our objective is to develop text classification and information extraction tools on one country and test them on data from different countries. The results of our task will appear in the working notes proceedings, published by CEUR Workshop Proceedings (CEUR-WS.org) and are presented in the CLEF 2019. Time & Place: 09-12 September 2019, Lugano - Switzerland Competition is organized using Codalab. Competition website : https://competitions.codalab.org/competitions/22349 We offer three subtasks and target research areas involve but not limited to: - Information Retrieval - Natural Language Processing - Machine Learning, Deep Learning - Big Data, Data Mining with a focus on generalizability. Tasks: We split the ProtestNews task in three subtasks: 1) Task 1: News article classification as protest vs. non-protest is a binary classification task that aims at discriminating between protest event related news articles and any other news article. Task 1 forms the basis of the subsequent tasks and is the first step towards extracting protest event related information from news articles. 2) Task 2: Event sentence detection aims at determining event sentences that contain an event trigger or a mention of it. Event triggers refer to the textual unit that makes a sentence to be annotated as an event sentence and an event mention is any kind of mention to that event trigger. For example; "In the attack that happened yesterday 20 people were injured." and "Today, we received news that 2 people died in the hospital after the incident." would be positive examples. 3) Task 3: Event information extraction is an event information extraction task that targets mainly events. Information such as participants, time and place of the event. So this task can be considered as a challenging Named Entity Recognition task where the participants are expected to detect not only the named entities found in the text but also be able to detect which ones are related to event. F1 measure will be used to evaluate Task 3. Subtasks two and three will be based on news articles that are labelled as protest or not for subtask 1. Participants can choose to participate in one or more of these subtasks independent of each other. The data from India will be used for training and testing. Evaluations will be done using a combination of the datasets from India and China. It has been often lamented that search engines are biased. I, however, argue that we have only scratched the surface because search engine bias is a multifaceted concept and the discussion usually solely focuses on some aspects. Further to giving an overview of the topic, I will show how search engine providers (and regulators) can take steps towards making search fair. Whereas a bias-free search engine is impossible, a fair search is. Achieving the right balance between business, measuring search quality and user needs can be quite challenging when building an ecommerce search engine. Call for Submissions Workshop on Designing Feminist Action - ACM DIS2019 Hi all! We are organizing a workshop at the upcoming Designing Interactive Systems (DIS2019) conference (scheduled from June 23rd to 28th) in San Diego. The workshop is called Designing Feminist Action: At the Intersection of Culture and Method. Please read a short description below. This one-day workshop will explore the use of design research and computing practice in resisting and reifying inequalities. We invite participants to share how we do, and how we might, bring our feminist ideals to bear upon the kinds of work that we perform (methods) and upon the forms of interaction that we participate in (culture). This workshop centers on three driving orientations of feminist design research: How do we translate feminist perspectives from scholarly discourse into practical action? How do we revise existing methods to align with our feminist values and beliefs? How do we intervene in the prevailing culture to identify and change attitudes, behaviors, and practices that work against equity and inclusiveness? We invite researchers/scholars, community members, artists, and others interested in participating to submit a brief position paper, design provocation, case study (approximately 500 words in a format of your choosing), or a video contribution (max. 5 minutes) that describes a situation in which you have either attempted OR would like to attempt the translation of feminist perspectives from scholarly discourse into some form of action. Hi All, I wanted to share a CFP that may be of interest to some of you. The deadline for proposal submission is May 20th, 2019 at 11:59pm. Dhanashree ------------------------------------------ Call for Proposals The Digital Humanities Forum 2019, presented by the Institute for Digital Research in the Humanities (IDRH), will take place October 3-4, 2019 at the Burge Union at the University of Kansas. This year, the theme of the Forum is: Bodies, Justice, Futures. With this theme, the Digital Humanities Forum hopes to inspire presenters to think about the ways in which we envision and build towards just futures for individual and collective bodies from around the globe. By evoking the human body, we ask presenters to foreground humanistic inquiries of digital culture and technology, to trace continuities between historical realities and present socio-political conditions, and/or take up issues related to marginalized and invisible lived experiences. Suggested topics related to our theme's keywords are listed below. Bodies: wearables and biotechnologies; cognition and neuro-aesthetics of art and literature; machine learning, artificial life, Turing bots, and robotics; datafication of human bodies and experiences; literary bodies: texts, archives, collections; the human in the (digital) archive; embodiment and affect in digital culture; critical issues of identity (race, gender, sexuality, indigeneity, etc) in digital culture; digital materiality. Justice: precarious and emotional labor in the digital humanities; ethics and politics of algorithms and digital platforms; data justice; eco-critical approaches to digital technologies and cultures; digital humanities in the global south; surveillance and privacy; democratization of science, technology, access, and knowledge production; citizen technology and citizen labs; race, space, and place in the digital. Futures: emerging technologies and data economies; speculative futures and critical making; participatory, critical, and speculative design; architectures of necessity; minimal computing; IT governance and cybersecurity; hackerspaces, fabrication, and DIY/repair culture; open technology and hardware; video games and the utopian/dystopian; Afrofuturism and the digital; pirate libraries and peer-to-peer networks; participatory, experimental, and/or anticipatory digital pedagogy. Forum organizers welcome proposals that explore connections in and between these themes and that suggest new approaches to digital scholarship. We encourage proposals from scholars at any stage in their careers, including undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, and faculty scholars; from gallery, library, archives, and museum professionals; as well as from those engaged in scholarship outside the university.
