Please share this CFP widely - thanks! ** JASIST Special Issue on “Information Privacy in the Digital Age” ** Human interactions at all levels (individual, group, organizational, and societal) are increasingly supported and organized by digital and networked technologies. Individuals’ personal information is transmitted and transacted across all sorts of networks, often beyond the individual’s control. Problematic practices in how companies handle personal information—as spotlighted by the recent Cambridge Analytica scandal and Equifax security breach—raise wide concerns for information privacy. Indeed, many would concur with Acquisti, Brandimarte, and Loewenstein’s (2015) statement: “If this is the age of information, then privacy is the issue of our times” (p. 509). While few would argue against the significance and urgency of privacy research, there are considerable gaps in the literature, particularly on how to re-conceptualize privacy in the digital age and how to improve industry practices to better protect the personal information of individuals and groups (Wu, Vitak, & Zimmer 2019). This special issue of the Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology (JASIST) is intended to push the boundaries of privacy research and challenge academics and practitioners to come up with innovative ideas in theorizing and resolving privacy-related issues within diverse contexts. We invite potential authors to ask: What are the important characteristics of privacy in the digital age, and how can we best address privacy challenges through academic research, system design, and policy intervention? FINAL CALL FOR PROPOSALS Mapping (In)Justice: Digital Theory + Praxis for Critical Scholarship November 7-8, 2019 at Fordham University (New York, NY) PROPOSALS DUE: Monday, April 15th https://mappinginjustice.org <https://mappinginjustice.org/> ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM This symposium creates space for critically considering digital mapping as both a method and an object of analysis. Specifically, we invite submissions that analyze or utilize spatial media so as to rethink and re-present distributions of capital, power, and privilege in historical, contemporary, and speculative contexts. We center “mapping” as an organizing theme for understanding and engaging social (in)justice because of its expanding role in literally and metaphorically arranging contemporary life. The everyday adoption of new spatial media—such as web-based mapping platforms, geosocial applications, and locative data—increasingly orient how society understands the past, experiences the present, and plans for the future. To map social justice and injustice is to consider how spatial media can help draw together dichotomies such as medium/method, art/science, and ontology/epistemology so as to trace, represent, and rework matters of inequity. This symposium thus encourages submissions that explore structural inequities in or through spatial media, especially as they relate to matters of difference—such as race, gender, class, ethnicity, ability, sexuality, and religion. We also encourage submissions that utilize digital mapping to spatially represent historically marginalized perspectives through empirical, textual, archival, participatory, and/or pedagogical methods. For more information [click here](https://isp.cs.ru.nl) # Theme: Dark Patterns [According to Gray et al.](http://colingray.me/wp-content/uploads/2018_Grayetal_CHI_DarkPatternsUXDesign.pdf) dark patterns started as a practitioner led initiative uncovering features of interface design crafted to trick users into doing things they may not want to do, but which benefit the business in question. More formally, the authors define it as instances in which designers use their knowledge of human behavior (e.g., psychology), and the desires of end users to implement deceptive functionality that is not in the user's best interest. At this summer school, we want to focus on dark patterns that impact users' privacy or their ability to practice their data protection rights. Dark patterns raise crucial questions regarding compliance with European data protection legislation and ethical technology deployment. In January 2019 the French Data Protection Authority (CNIL) imposed a fine of 50 million Euros on Google "in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), for lack of transparency, inadequate information and lack of valid consent regarding the ads personalization", according to the CNIL. This sky-high fine illustrates the importance paid by regulators to combating dark patterns. Also consumer organisations, like the [Norwegian Consumer Council](https://www.forbrukerradet.no/undersokelse/no-undersokelsekategori/deceived-by-design), have reported on how users are ‘deceived by design’ by tech companies, discouraging people to exercise their rights to privacy. In this summerschool we also propose to look beyond the interface, and ask, where do dark patterns emerge in the production of internet-based services, in the organizing of software and hardware infrastructures, in the elaboration and interpretation of laws, in the push for certain economic models, and conceptions of data, systems, users, and the social. How do we come to recognize, uncover, resist and prevent dark patterns in these different socio-technical contexts? Dark patterns as a concept is a not easy to pin down, since manipulation of environment and behavior can be seen as a part of any design intervention. Yet, the rise of the concept is indicative that there are a considerable set of practices that are identified under the label of dark patterns. In this context, at the summer school, we will discuss study dark matters and ask whether intentions matter, or outcomes can also serve as a way to identify whether a practice may qualify as a dark pattern in the context of privacy and data protection. Being able to think collectively about this hard question will provide us with tools, methods and arguments to address the continuum between poor design or decisions, lack of resources, incompetence, recklessness, optimization, externalization of costs, and intentional patterns that lead to manipulation, deception or unwarranted levels of persuasion. We will explore together where we can productively draw the line when it comes to patterns that harm vs. patterns that just do, and how technical, social, ethical, legal and economic practices may be reimagined to address these practices. # Format The summer school is interdisciplinary, involving the following disciplines: computer science, law and social sciences / media and communication studies. The school lasts one week, with nine scheduled lectures (five morning lectures and four afternoon lectures) of two hours each. These nine lectures are equally distributed over the three disciplines, with top-notch lectures from each of the disciplines. The lectures will lay the grounds for an interdisciplinary conversation among students and lecturers coming from a variety of backgrounds. The remaining time is used for hands on working group sessions to study practical cases. The cases will be offered by businesses, governments, government related institutions (like DPAs) and civil society/NGOs. Groups of six students, ideally two from each discipline, are formed to tackle the cases and report back on their results in a plenary session. The school is held in a location that encourages dialogue and social interactions between both the staff and the students, both during lectures and in the evening. Staff (i.e. lecturers) are encouraged to stay at the summer school for the whole length of the school. 2nd CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS A Special Issue of The International Journal of Information, Diversity, & Inclusion (IJIDI) FORCED MIGRATION: MAKING SENSE OF A COMPLEX ECOSYSTEM We seek to bring together researchers from the information fields broadly construed, along with researchers in related disciplines, to showcase a range of concepts, practices, and methodologies available for deeper engagement with issues related to forced migration. We invite work offering diverse perspectives on forced migration as a means of enriching our understanding of the range of actors involved in this complex ecosystem. Contributions to this special issue may look at forced migration through the lens of information and media practices, embodied experiences, memory work and curation, discourses and practices around diversity, and community building in a global and digital world. This approach will pave the way for a broader interdisciplinary conversation on forced migration. We welcome a broad spectrum of submissions that touch on the following aspects: * Frameworks that account for diverse information practices related to forced migration (including material, symbolic, affective dimensions); * The evolution of conceptual frameworks for understanding forced migration in an age of migration and displacement (including the role of social media and online spaces in creating/regaining a sense of place; credibility and assessment; multilingual interactions; user-generated content); * Current and future roles of cultural and memory institutions as resources on, and sites for, the documentation and curation of migration experiences and practices in our networked world (i.e., How can we best make space for refugees? Rural regions in countries around the world suffer from lack of adequate broadband infrastructure. Even where access is available, ability to pay is often much lower in those regions. B4RN empowers communities to develop their own broadband solutions that are faster and cheaper than commercial internet service providers, and the B4RN model has become an inspiration for both not-for-profit and commercial broadband solutions for closing the digital divide in the UK and worldwide. In this livestreamed seminar, Chris will share B4RN's story - how this thriving community network went from an ambitious idea, driven by a desire and demand for connectivity, to a world-class community-run and community-enhancing internet provider, all while keeping the community at its core.
