Non-software uses of GitHub

I’m looking for GitHub repositories that are used for things other than software, especially where users are actively collaborating rather than just putting together static collections. So far, we have found a few books being written, some musical transcriptions being error-checked, and some policy documents maintained online. Does anyone know of any examples of these or other categories? Any pointers much appreciated. Happy to share what we find with anyone interested. Submit abstracts and contact the conveners at: https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/panels/6286 We would like to invite you to submit abstracts to our panel at EASST 2018 The panel investigates innovation processes driven by antagonistic relations between actors on both sides of the law. We invite case studies of how mutual hostilities between actors are pursued through technological change, whereby each actor seeks to gain an edge against their adversary. Three empirical fields that exemplify this dynamic are the surge of legal highs, information security and crypto-currencies. More examples of the same thing can be found in other fields of empirical investigation and suit this panel. What we will examine under the label of "outlaw innovation" is how conflict breeds innovation. Related to this is an awareness of the tenuous relation between legislation and innovation. The "outlaw" is just another word for an innovator. Concurrently, however, capitalism strives relentlessly to subsume and integrate its own outside, turning this unknown into innovation and new markets. >From this observation follows that the purported outsider position ascribed to various grassroots innovators, users, etc., must be scrutinized. States, capital and academic actors work in conjunction with these outlawed/independent researchers to produce a shared language of common concerns around risks and opportunities inherent in technological innovation, such as in the Tor project. The legal grey zone thus emerges as an incubator of innovation for legal businesses. Any research on/with YouTube API?

So I stumbled into a developer who created one of those "floating" YouTube music video players. After six years of curating the original radio news "flash briefing," I thought hey, why not try video. Combining forces on Android (so far) we've come up with: http://tvnewsapp.com So, here's the deal. The YouTube API is pretty darn interesting and I'd love to connect with researchers who are experimenting with it. I am interested in ways to better automate how to surface live news streams. The app has scores of these. I never expected so many from so many countries. Some countries clearly are all in with nearly all news channels competing on Facebook while others while free on the web haven't joined the YouTube club. Hi folks, Anyone can recommend readings helping in conceptualising algorithms as "old" infrastructures or "living" archives. I am studying more particularly large-scale decision-making systems that relies on "old" infrastructures of the state. Ex: algorithms used to calculate taxes, the work mobility of civil servants, allocation of students into schools, etc. I am interested about two things : - while algorithms are sometimes defined as innovative and somehow "new" they actually relies on "old" infrastructures. (the temporality of infrastructures) - the infrastructural capacity of the state and the way it maintain an opacity on these systems. (the attractiveness and dangers of algorithmic transparency) Any recommendation from infrastructure studies ? critical algorithm studies ? sociology/anthropology of the state and civil services ? Query on supportive teen online affinity groups

Dear AoIR colleagues, I am seeking to expand my knowledge of teen online affinity networks for a new project I am scoping out, and was hoping to tap your wisdom. We are looking to partner with youth online community organizers and influencers to promote positive social support and mental wellness through digital channels. The goal is to work with networks involving teens (ages 13-18) who experience disproportionate amounts of discrimination, trauma, and stress, and are not currently well-served by more conventional mental health services. We’re particularly interested in serving girls of color and subgroups (eg. immigrant, Latinx, and Muslim teens), and LGBTQIA+ teens. Two questions: • Do you know of online groups, communities, networks, or influencers who serve these groups of teens, and who might be possible partners for this kind of effort? • Are there channels and forms of teen online participation that might be fruitful avenues for reaching vulnerable teens? For example, young women of color in college might form GroupMe or FB groups for social support, but I’m not certain if a similar practice exists at the high school level. The project is U.S. focused but I’d be interested in examples from outside the U.S. as well. I would be super grateful for any suggestions and advice, including literature to read and general feedback. Thanks so much for considering. Call for Papers "Distance Education Across Critical Theoretical Landscapes" The purpose of this special themed issue is to provide a venue for scholars, researchers, instructional designers, and classroom teachers to engage with critical theories and diversity in open, flexible and technology-mediated distance learning environments. To provide the most opportunity for inclusion, we invite submissions that consider a wide variety of technologies, pedagogies, modes and settings (e.g., K-12, higher education, and industry/corporate settings). We encourage submissions that represent the theoretical landscape, and which demonstrate the breadth and depth of theoretical lenses that have been historically underrepresented.
