Three previous workshops on Health Recommender Systems (HRS) have incorporated diverse research fields and problems in which recommender systems can improve our awareness, understanding and behaviour regarding our own, and the general public's health. At the same time, these application areas bring new challenges into the recommender community. Recommendations that influence the health status of a patient need to be legally sound and, as such, today, they often involve a human in the loop to make sure the recommendations are appropriate. To make the recommender infallible, complex domain-specific user models need to be created, which creates privacy issues. While trust in a recommendation needs to be explicitly earned through, for example, transparency, explanations and empowerment, other systems might want to persuade users into taking beneficial actions that would not be willingly chosen otherwise. Multiple and diverse stakeholders in health systems produce further challenges. Taking the patient's perspective, simple interaction and safety against harmful recommendations might be the prioritized concern. For clinicians and experts, on the other hand, what matters is precise and accurate content. Healthcare and insurance providers and clinics all have other priorities. This workshop will deepen the discussions started at the three prior workshops and will work towards further development of the research topics in Health Recommender Systems. The purpose of this special themed issue is to provide a venue for scholars, researchers, instructional designers, and classroom teachers to engage with critical theories and diversity in open, flexible and technology-mediated distance learning environments. To provide the most opportunity for inclusion, we invite submissions that consider a wide variety of technologies, pedagogies, modes and settings (e.g., K-12, higher education, and industry/corporate settings). We encourage submissions that represent the theoretical landscape, and which demonstrate the breadth and depth of theoretical lenses that have been historically underrepresented. Apologies for the self-promotion, but I’d like to announce today<canary:event?ts=580752005.00>’s release of my new book, The Essential Guide to Intellectual Property<https://j.mp/sinnIP>, from Yale Press. Initially, Yale asked me to write a coursebook covering IP — your basic overview of copyrights, patents, trademarks, etc. Instead, I wrote kind of an anti-coursebook: all the stuff that typically gets left out of the story. The book talks about stuff like: how copyright has shaped visual culture and musical culture for the past few centuries; how lobbying, campaign finance, and dark money shape our IP laws; how international IP treaties get used as a kind of “soft power” — often to the detriment of “developing nations” in the “global South”; how IP actually gets used in the trenches of industries ranging from entertainment to marketing to pharmaceuticals to tech; and some of the emerging challenges with the law, such as AI authorship and rights to DNA sequences. I also talk about a lot of AoIR-related stuff, including the “copyfight,” the open source movement, digital culture and “piracy,” and more. I’d appreciate all the support you can offer for the book — please buy a copy, promote it on social media, review it, rate it, critique it, remix it, put it on your syllabi and summer reading lists. We are pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the 2020 ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency (FAT* 2020), to be held in Barcelona, Spain on January 27–30 2020. The third annual ACM FAT* Conference brings together researchers and practitioners interested in fairness, accountability, and transparency in socio-technical systems. The previous two conferences had acceptance rates of 25% and attracted attendees from across academia, industry and public policy.
