However, these state-of-the-art algorithms are typically applied in relatively straightforward scenarios. In reality, recommendation is often a more complex problem: it is usually just a single step in the user’s more complex background need. These background needs can often place a variety of constraints on which recommendations are interesting to the user and when they are appropriate. Users may want combinations of multiple items, or recommendations on the sequence of consumption. Moreover, different users may want different information about items, so beyond ranking the system needs to decide which information best to display to each user. However, relatively little research has been done on these complex recommendation scenarios. The ComplexRec 2019 workshop aims to address this by providing an interactive venue for discussing approaches to recommendation in complex scenarios that have no simple one-size-fits-all solution. We are especially interested in papers that have a clear focus on complex user needs and tasks and the consequences for modelling the recommendation process, designing practical recommender systems and their evaluation in the covered domain(s). It is the follow-up to the successful ComplexRec workshops at RecSys 2017 and 2018. *** Topics of interest *** We invite original contributions about recommendation in complex scenarios. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: * Task-based recommendation — Approaches that take the user’s background tasks and needs into account when generating recommendations * Interactive recommendation — Techniques for successfully capturing, weighting, and integrating continuous user feedback into recommender systems, both in situations of sparse and rich user interaction * Feature-driven recommendation — Techniques for eliciting, capturing and integrating rich information about user preferences for specific product features * Constraint-based recommendation — Approaches that successfully combine state-of-the-art recommendation algorithms with complex knowledge-based or constraint-based optimization * Query-driven recommendation — Techniques for eliciting and incorporating rich information about the user’s recommendation need (e.g., need for accessibility, engagement, socio-cultural values, familiarity, etc.) in addition to the standard user preference information * Context-aware recommendation — Methods for the extraction and integration of complex contextual signals for recommendation * Complex data sources — Approaches to dealing with complex data sources and how to infer user preferences from these sources * Evaluation & validation — Approaches to the evaluation and validation of recommendation in complex scenarios *** Submissions *** We encourage authors to submit short papers and position papers of 4-6 pages in length dedicated to any aspect of recommendation in complex scenarios. Accepted submissions will then be invited for short presentations. Evaluation criteria for acceptance will include novelty, diversity, significance for theory/practice, quality of presentation, and the potential for sparking interesting discussion at the workshop. All submitted papers will be reviewed by the Program Committee. At least one author of each accepted paper must attend the workshop. All submissions should be in English and should not have been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. Gentle reminder: Deadline for extended abstract submission is approaching - *June 15, 2019* The European Conference on Health Communication (ECHC) 2019 is a joint conference of the Health Communication Temporary Working Group (TWG) of the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA) and the Health Communication Division of the German Communication Association (DGPuK). The conference will be held from 13 to 15 November 2019 in Zurich (Switzerland). It is hosted by the Department of Communication and Media Research at the University of Zurich (IKMZ). The conference has a thematic focus on social aspects of health communication. It will provide a platform for discussing the interrelations between health, health communication, and people’s social contexts on various levels and from diverse perspectives. With the aim to represent the full scope of current health communication research, the ECHC also welcomes research on further issues of health communication. CFP: HICSS Social Networking and Communities 53rd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) January 7-10, 2020, Grand Wailea, Maui, Hawaii PAPERS DUE: June 15, 2019 (see http://hicss.hawaii.edu/authors/) We call for papers that investigate social networks and communities supported and/or complemented by social media and other social technologies for work, learning, socializing, or economic or political processes. Papers may address theory, design, practices, use or evaluation of social technologies. 'Social networks and communities' refers broadly to social phenomena that may range from fully virtual to geographically based communities, and includes communnities of inquiry, interest, or practice; epistemic communities and networked advocacy; as well as other collective phenomena emerging within networks of individuals. We solicit papers that examine relationships between social phenomena and technologies, including how social phenomena are embedded or emerge within technological settings, how communities use technologies to further their goals, or how technologies otherwise influence or are appropriated by social phenomena and entities. Individual actors as the unit of analysis may also be included as long as communities and technologies are involved; e.g., how individuals relate to communities via technologies. We are particularly interested in papers that explore new models, theories and methods rather than re-applying and repeating established results. In order to leverage the interdisciplinary nature of HICSS and enable dialogue between social and technological disciplines, papers may be motivated by a broad range of theory-driven or data-driven perspectives and methods, including for example but not limited to social network analysis, content analysis, ethnographic investigations, and agent-based simulations. We particularly encourage papers that: • advance our understanding of social network growth, formation, structure and outcomes through social media; • explore how socio-technical affordances relate to social media use and outcomes; • interrogate entanglements of technology and culture in community settings; • examine how information and misinformation spread in social media and networks, and how algorithms, bots, and social media design affect this spread; • evaluate design of social media technologies and practices for effective community development and maintenance; and • develop theories, models and principles of social media design, use and outcomes. Many of you may know The Velvet Light Trap—a graduate student-run, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to film and media studies. The journal is published by the University of Texas Press and run by students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Texas at Austin. This year we are working on a special issue on queerness in the digital age. Attached to this email a copy of this year's call for papers as a pdf, with the text duplicated below. CALL FOR PAPERS: The Velvet Light Trap #86—Queerness in the Digital Age Queer Media and the Digital Digital technology has altered all aspects of media cultures, including questions of identity that can affect everything from the production of texts, their content, their distribution, their reception, and more. At the same time, popular and academic understandings of queerness have evolved to incorporate expanding ideas of gender, sexuality, race, disability, ethnicity, and other identity categories. Not only has digital technology altered the ways in which queerness can be articulated, but queer media has also shaped the form and reception of digital texts. Understanding queerness in the digital age requires us to account for the changes in both queer studies and digital studies. For this issue, we welcome submissions that examine the ways in which queerness and digital media interact. These articles could include, but are not limited to, placing media texts in a broader cultural context that speaks to the nature of queerness in the digital age, contextualizing the relationship between queer audiences and media texts, or analyzing queer digital production cultures. Submissions could also consider queerness from the perspective of platformization, fandoms and audience reception, as well as digital media ecologies. What is the impact of social media on queer practices and identities? How does the rising visibility of queer identities leave queers, especially queers of color, vulnerable to exploitation or attack? How do queer creators utilize and navigate ever-changing media ecosystem? We invite submissions that investigate these or other questions related to queerness in the digital age through any applicable methodological or theoretical approaches. Potential Submission Themes • The evolution of queer theory and its application to media (e.g. queer of color critique, trans theory, crip theory) • Queerness, race and ethnicity (e.g. Afrofuturism, disidentification, queer indigenous studies) • Digital technology, queer bodies, and disability • Changing receptions in queer audiences and queer-targeted media • Queer modes of fandom • Creators, star texts, and micro-celebrities • Digital pornography studies • Articulations of queerness in digital television (e.g. streaming platforms, webseries, second-screen engagement) • Queerness in digital games • The democratization of digital cinema (or lack thereof) • Queer comics, webcomics, and digital distribution • Non-fiction media aesthetics and portrayals of queerness • Queer podcast networks, series, and hosts • Social Media, Online Communities, and Dating Apps (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Patreon, Tumblr, Her, Grindr, Scruff, OnlyFans) • Queer youth and the disruption of the coming out narrative • Assimilation and respectability politics (e.g. Neoliberalism, homonormativity, homonationalism) • Queer music production, distribution, and algorithmic discovery • Modes of queer exhibition (e.g. film festivals, museums and galleries, community spaces) • Reflections on what “queer” or “queer studies” might mean or signify in the digital age Submission Guidelines Submissions should be between 6,000– 7,500 words (approximately 20-25 pages double-spaced), formatted in Chicago style. Please submit an electronic copy of the paper, along with a one-page abstract (no more than 100 words), both saved as Microsoft Word files. While images are not required for submissions, if your submission includes images, please ensure that they are high resolution and included as an image file separate from your Word files. On behalf of the editorial team at Frontiers in Communication's Research Topic, I invite submissions to a special issue on "Harnessing Social Media and Digital Technologies to Improve Health Communication” *About this Research Topic (special issue): Advancements in information and communication technologies offer a variety of opportunities for public health researchers and practitioners, from rapidly disseminating health information and engaging patients and the public for health promotion, to reaching out to underserved populations for health interventions and education. In the last decade, academic references on use of technologies for behavioral and social medicines has become prolific in a wide range of literatures. Along with the exponential growth in mobile, internet and social media technologies, leveraging scientific principles, theories, and research methods is key to effectively harnessing these technologies and media environments for public health impact. Multidisciplinary methods are critical and rigorous, scientific approaches will help generate replicable and reproducible research outcomes.
