The appointed Associate Editors will begin processing manuscripts Fall 2020, officially assuming duties Sept. 9, 2020 and overseeing volumes for 2020-2023. Description of the Journal The Journal of Communication Technology is the official journal of the Communication Technology division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. The expressed aim of this journal is to bring together research that facilitates discussion and cultivates understanding of the ways in which communication technologies are changing not only media processes and content, but also audiences, institutions, and society at large. Since communication technologies themselves have now come to fulfill a central, social role in virtually all forms of mediated communication, JoCTEC welcomes scholarship from a broad area of inquiry provided that the focus pertains to communication technologies. This includes but is not limited to studies of social media, advertising, science, networks, health, politics, history, policy, public relations, management, economics, ethics, minorities, and visual communication. Requirements and Responsibilities The Associate Editors must be a member or become a member of AEJMC Communication Technology division and must maintain membership in the division throughout the editorial term. Additional responsibilities include the following: ● Promoting submissions to the journal. ● Providing timely decisions and suitable feedback to authors. ● Assembling issues according to the publication schedule. ● Maintaining good communication with fellow JoCTEC editorial team. Many thanks for these answers. I should have made clearer in my message that some open source conferencing software solutions do exist. Apart from Jitsi, Big blue button comes to mind for example. The salient point is not really the frontend software itself but the investment in the infrastructure to support the bandwidth, something that can be done at the local or national level. In France, "rendez vous Renater" was working ok until the pandemic but the infrastructure behind it was not designed for the sharp increase in use that followed the pandemic. The point is that it became easier to outsource to corporations offering the necessary bandwidth with their software solutions instead of investing in increasing the possibilities of the existing one. In a similar way, some French universities completely abandoned their emailing addresses services provided by Renater because Renater is charging for a service that Google provides for free. (And from what I saw in my short stay in Philly, that may also be the case for American universities). The Use of Artificial Intelligence to Address Online Bullying and Abuse

Thanks in advance, Kind regards, Tijana The International Journal of Bullying Prevention (IJBP), special issue: The Use of Artificial Intelligence to Address Online Bullying and Abuse[image: New Content Item] Special Issue Editors: Dr. Tijana Milosevic, The National Anti-Bullying Research and Resource Centre, Institute of Education, Dublin City University Dr. Kathleen Van Royen, Department of Communication Studies, University of Antwerp Dr. Brian Davis, School of Computing, Dublin City University and ADAPT Research Centre Cyberbullying or online bullying, harassment and abuse pose significant challenges for online platforms. The use of natural language processing (NLP), various forms of machine learning (such as supervised machine learning, deep learning) and artificial intelligence (AI), is becoming more prevalent in moderating these behaviours on social media platforms and various content sharing apps. A number of social media companies refer to their increasing reliance on AI to moderate various forms of abusive behaviour, indicating their relative success in identifying these proactively. Nonetheless, companies reveal little information about how such moderation is applied in practice, about the details behind the algorithm design; and they infrequently release datasets that would allow scientists who do not work in the social media industry to understand this process. While some industry experts and scholars place significant hopes in deep learning to solve the problem of online abuse, others identify the limitations of this approach, including a relative lack of training datasets; the misinterpretation of contextual cues and relational history, and the danger of systematic bias that can inadvertently slip into such modelling. Furthermore, there is a relative lack of insight from the perspectives of sociology and psychology and other social science disciplines about how users (adults and children) perceive such interventions and about their desirability. For instance, how do users understand the balance of rights to safety on the one hand and privacy and freedom of expression on the other, when it comes to the application of proactive moderation tools? For this special issue, we are looking for a variety of submissions from a range of disciplines that examine various aspects of AI applications to address abuse. This includes but it is not limited to: communication, education, psychology, sociology, philosophy, computer science and engineering, human computer interaction, science and technology studies, among others. The goals of this special issue are: - Outline various approaches in the application of NLP, machine learning and AI to addressing cyberbullying, harassment, and various specific forms of cyberaggression - Outline the state of the field today, assessing the strengths and limitations of the solutions currently available - Find articles that not only report on current approaches to the use of AI in moderation, but also critique current methods applied by social media platforms - Find insights from technical sciences and social science research that would inform the design and deployment of tools for computational scholars - Facilitate interdisciplinarity by translating some of the work undertaken in the fields of computer science and engineering into a language that is more accessible to scholars in social sciences and humanities - Drawing attention of the scholars in technical fields to the work being done in social sciences and humanities on this topic that can further inform their research Abstracts (max 500 words) should be submitted by September 15, 2020 to Tijana Milosevic at tijana.milosevic(a)dcu.ie. It´s increasingly relevant to a wide range of media experiences and application areas. Following a series of17 successful Presence conference events, PRESENCE 2020 will retain the single-track format and enjoyable social environment of previous conferences while featuring an expanded variety of paper and poster sessions, panel discussions, keynote presentations, hands-on demonstrations of presence applications/services/projects, and informal discussion, networking and fun. Members of both academic and industry communities are welcome. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The term presence has many formal and informal meanings but is used by a growing interdisciplinary scholarly community to refer to experiences in which technology is overlooked or misconstrued in some way during a mediated experience. Long a focus of those who study virtual reality and environments, it´s increasingly relevant to a wide range of media experiences. For example, presence occurs when we get "lost" in the world of a novel, TV show, movie, video game or theme park ride; we´re convinced by the realism of paintings or graphic designs; we treat our cars, computers or other machines as if they have personalities of their own, and we feel like we´re "with" a person we talk to on the phone or in a video conference. The presence research community has been working to identify causes, characteristics and consequences of diverse presence experiences. The consequences identified so far - including arousal/relaxation, empathy, enjoyment, persuasion and more - make clear the importance and power of presence to improve communication across a wide variety of contexts and applications of interest to scholars and those who create media technologies and content. Presence as a concept and set of phenomena is related to the work being done in nearly every field and business sector from art to zoology, with particularly direct applications in business, education, entertainment and health. The 4000+ posts in ISPR Presence News (http://ispr.info/posts) and thousands more on its predecessor, the presence-l listserv (http://listserv.temple.edu/archives/presence-l.html) along with the Presence Bibliography on the ISPR website (http://ispr.info/) illustrate the breadth of presence applications, and the breadth, depth and value of presence scholarship. The objectives of the conference are to deepen and update the knowledge of those already familiar with presence and introduce new scholars and practitioners to the centrality, pervasiveness, and value of presence phenomena, theory and research. The overarching goal is to help integrate and increase collaborative scholarship on presence. SUBMISSIONS Topics We seek original, high quality papers and demonstrations that contribute to our collective understanding of presence phenomena and applications in any/every aspect of life. Topics of interest include (but are absolutely not limited to): * Presence theory * Measures of presence * Presence and emotion * Presence and education * Presence and social interaction * Gender and Presence * Neuroscience approaches to Presence * Presence in gaming and entertainment * Philosophical perspectives on presence * Ethics of presence * Presence technologies and applications (e.g. in business, arts, medicine and therapy) * The future of presence research Theme: Presence during and after the pandemic Presence experiences were already becoming more common in many aspects of life before the Coronavirus pandemic, but the current crisis has vastly accelerated the need and desire for effective presence experiences and creative progress in the uses of technology to create them. All-online teaching at every level of education, virtual graduation ceremonies, working from home via online platforms, live streaming of music concerts and theater performances, virtual travel experiences, virtual business and academic conferences, and so much more represent huge changes for societies, organizations and individuals regarding presence. If ever there was an appropriate group to explore these changes and their implications for the future it's the presence community. Individual descriptive, research, theory, or position papers as well as dedicated panels related to this theme are encouraged. ISPR will also organize a session in which we trial and discuss the characteristics of a variety of social presence platforms (e.g. Zoom, WebEx, Teams, Discord, Mozilla Hubs, etc), with the goal of producing a co-authored publishable paper outlining our conclusions about their strengths and weaknesses in producing effective presence experiences. [NOTE: Submissions on the previously announced Theme 2 below are still welcome!] Theme 2: The world of presence Presence experiences are becoming more common in more aspects of life for more and more people around the world. These experiences have the potential to bring diverse individuals, groups and nations together but also isolate them in their own mediated realities. What are the contours of presence around the world and what implications and challenges does it pose for researchers, scholars, technology designers and users, and citizens? We invite submission in all of the categories below that identify, consider and ideally propose specific steps we can take to make presence a force for positive rather than negative change. Data-based projects, concept and theory building work as well as personal (first person) reflections are encouraged. Categories We invite researchers and practitioners to submit their work in the categories below. The European Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (ECSCW) is an international venue on practice-centred computing and the design of cooperation technologies. It is a series of conferences on computer-supported cooperative work located in Europe that was established in 1989. The 19th edition of ECSCW will take place in Zurich, Switzerland, from 7 to 11 June 2021. This call invites submissions of Journal Papers, the most established category of papers featured in ECSCW. The submissions undergo an integrated, journal-like review and revision process. The accepted articles are published in Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW): The Journal of Collaborative Computing and Work Practices. ECSCW 2021 Call for Journal Papers The European Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (ECSCW) invites submissions of original and novel research related to the wide field of CSCW. ECSCW is a single-track conference that contributes to developing an interdisciplinary and global community, supported by EUSSET, the European Society for Socially Embedded Technologies ( https://www.eusset.eu/) The conference format facilitates critical discussion across disciplinary and national borders in the field. The Conference features a range of submission formats including journal papers, exploratory papers, notes, posters, and demos, as well as various events such as masterclasses, workshops or a doctoral colloquium. Important Dates since April 2020: System open for submissions April 2020 – March 2021: Review, revise & resubmit processes, on a rolling basis 1 April 2021: Acceptance cut-off date for inclusion in ECSCW 2021 Programme. June 7-11, 2021: ECSCW 2021 Conference in Zurich Submissions are handled continuously in accordance with the Journal’s processes. As soon as the submission is made, it enters the review and revision process. Full papers must have a status of “Accept but incomplete” by the 1st of April 2021 to be included in the ECSCW 2021 Programme. Papers accepted after that date will be included in ECSCW 2022 Programme. Submission Description We invite journal papers documenting original, rich, and in-depth contributions to CSCW. Authors are encouraged to submit papers that improve and extend the CSCW field. Relevant themes include, but are not limited to: - Empirical investigations of collaborative practices. Findings, guidelines, and/or studies related to communication, collaboration, and social technologies, practices, or use. - System design focusing on solutions to support cooperative work in increasingly complex, networked, and data-driven settings. - Hardware, architectures, infrastructures, interaction design, technical foundations, algorithms, and/or toolkits that enable the building of new social and collaborative systems and experiences. - Methodologies and tools for investigating human practices, e.g., the nature of ethnography and the role of other innovative research approaches in building systems or studying their use, the application of critical design or design fictions to investigate future possibilities. - Critical analysis or theory with clear relevance to study, design, or use of collaborative settings and systems. - Domain-specific social and collaborative applications, including applications to digital civics, grassroots movements, healthcare, transportation, ICT4D, sustainability, education, workplace, accessibility, global collaboration, or other domains. - Analysis of the ethics and policy implications of socio-technical systems, the values that inform them, and the algorithms that shape them. - The changing nature of collaboration and teaming in relation to intelligent machine agents, e.g., human-AI relationships in collaborative practices. - Studies, prototypes, or other investigations that explore interactions across disciplines, distances, languages, generations, and cultures, to help understand how to design in relation to social, temporal, and/or spatial boundaries. - Discussions and extrapolations of work-practices and technologies, which contribute to the core topics of ECSCW. Review and Revision Process Submissions to the journal-track of the ECSCW conference will undergo a fully integrated, continuous review process. The submission and review process will allow authors to develop and refine stronger papers over a longer time period. The review process is single-blind. Each submission is assigned to one of the three ECSCW 2021 Journal Papers Chairs, who is in charge of finding three reviewers, writing a meta-review and making a decision. This decision is transmitted to the Lead Editor of the CSCW Journal in charge of ECSCW contributions, who will transmit the decision to the Editor in Chief of the Journal, and will manage conflicts of interest among the different Journal Papers Chairs if necessary. Authors of the submitted papers will be considered as reviewers for other submissions and may be contacted by the Journal Papers Chairs on this behalf. Authors are encouraged to submit as soon as they have their manuscripts ready. The system is already open for submissions. Early submissions will allow for multiple Revise & Resubmit cycles and will generally result in earlier publication of the accepted manuscript in the Journal. Papers could take approximately three months between submission and results of the first review cycle, and approximately two months in the subsequent review cycles, but the Journal Papers Chairs are working hard to speed the process up. Papers usually go through at least two review rounds. Upon an acceptance notice (status “Accept but incomplete”), the paper will go through production (including proof corrections) and only then will it be published on Springer Online First. To be considered for publication and presentation at ECSCW 2021, papers must reach the status “Accept but incomplete” by the 1st of April 2021. This status differs from a “Minor revisions” recommendation. The former refers to papers which require only minimal formatting amendments, while the latter refers to papers which still require some minor structural or conceptual changes. Early submission makes it more likely to receive reviews in a timely manner and speeds up the process of publication afterwards. If the paper does not reach the “Accept but incomplete” status by the 1st of April 2021, it will automatically be transferred to the batch of submissions for the subsequent ECSCW conference, unless the submission is withdrawn. With this approach, the authors will not have to restart the submission process. All work completed to this point will be considered for the next edition of the conference. This also means that authors may get their papers accepted shortly after the ECSCW 2021 conference. If this happens, the paper will be published as an Online First manuscript as soon as it goes through the production process; the authors will be invited to present their work at ECSCW 2022. Submission Format Paper submissions should be formatted following the CSCW Journal Instructions for Authors available at: https://www.springer.com/journal/10606/submission-guidelines. The length of the paper must correspond to the size of the contribution. We suggest the papers to be between 10000 and 15000 words (including tables and appendices, excluding references). Communication Technology and Well-Being There are always concerns for people’s well-being in the current digital age. We are not unfamiliar with the worries that the usage of digital media may increase people’s stress, cause more depression, reduce life satisfaction, or elicit even more serious health problems. Therefore, technology giants, like Google, have emphasized their missions to improve users’ well-being, such as helping people form healthy habits of media use, stay away from distraction, and build balanced relationships with digital devices (see https://wellbeing.google/) However, not everyone agrees with the notion that people’s well-being in the digital age is in danger. A recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center among more than 1,000 digital media experts discovered that almost half of the respondents believed in the beneficial impact of digital media on people’s well-being (Anderson & Rainie, 2018). For example, some people argue that the increased connectiveness through social media may benefit people’s mental health. Such inconsistency could also be found in the existing scholarship of well-being and digital media. While some research has reported direct and indirect effects of using digital media on various symptoms of ill-being (e.g., Primack et al., 2017; Vannucci, Flannery, & Ohannessian, 2017), other scholars have argued that using digital media does not necessarily hurt (e.g., Hall, Kearney, & Xing, 2018) or even benefits people’s well-being (e.g., Chou & Edge, 2012). Well-being is a complicated psychological construct. It contains multiple dimensions—from people’s temporary emotional feelings to their overall satisfaction of life (Chan, 2013; Goswami, 2012). It is not our intention to affirm whether using digital media improves or inhibits people’s well-being, as there is no consensus and there will probably not be one. We attempt to carry on the conversation of well-being in the digital age from a different perspective—to understand the role of communication technology. We believe communication technology is a double-edged sword for well-being. Instead of debating whether using digital media is good or bad, a more meaningful way is to investigate how the various aspects of communication technology influence the well-being of different groups of users under distinct circumstances. It is possible that a certain group of users may exhibit improved well-being with a certain aspect of communication technology under a certain circumstance, but they may exhibit a completely opposite symptom of well-being when the technology factor or contextual factor changes. The purpose of this special issue is to provide a forum where the role of communication technology in influencing digital users’ well-being could be deeply discussed. Empirical papers, qualitative research, and literature reviews are all welcome as long as the impact of a certain aspect of communication technology on people’s well-being is highlighted. By identifying the relevant boundary conditions and underlying mechanisms, this special issue aims to forward theory building and development in the field of technology psychology. The ultimate goal of this special issue is to provide some useful guidance for digital practitioners to better protect users and promote their well-being. JoCTEC is the official journal of the Communication Technology Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. This journal aims to bring together research that facilitates discussion and cultivates understanding of the ways in which communication technologies are changing not only media processes and content, but also audiences, institutions, and society at large. Topics Potential paper topics include (but are not limited to): ● The impact of using digital media on people’s emotions or moods. ● How does media multitasking influence people’s well-being? ● The role of technological features of digital media, such as interactivity and customization, in affecting people’s well-being. ● Users’ well-being in social media platforms, like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. ● Users’ well-being in emerging media platforms, like social live streaming (e.g., Twitch and Bilibili). ● Online gamers’ well-being. ● Information clutter/overload and well-being. ● How does digital advertising affect consumers’ well-being? ● How does “fake news” affect the public’s well-being? ● Children’s well-being in the digital age. Guideline for Paper Submission Submissions should follow the manuscript guidelines for JoCTEC. ● Prepare the manuscript using APA (6th ed) citation style, with text of no more than 9,000 words (inclusive of abstract, figures/tables, and references). ● Submit the manuscript in Word format with all author-identifying information omitted to allow blinded peer review. ● Confirm manuscript is not before another journal for consideration, and that the manuscript has not been previously published, including in a language other than English.
