We are appointing a three-year, full-time postdoctoral research fellow to join us (Dr Giorgia Aiello, Professor Christopher Anderson & Professor Helen Kennedy) on *Generic Visuals in the News: The Role of Stock Photos and Simple Data Visualizations in Assembling Publics*, from 1st October 2020 until 30th September 2023. *Generic Visuals in the News, *a research project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, will explore how generic visuals assemble political publics. Do stock photographs and simple data visualizations - which are increasingly ubiquitous and understudied - bring groups of people together around shared interests and concerns? Do they activate citizens to care about particular issues and lead to specific forms of political engagement? *Generic Visuals in the News* will use mixed methods, combining ethnographic fieldwork, focus groups, interviews, and social semiotic analysis. Panel Organizers: Jim Plusquellic, Saverio Fazzari and Domenic Forte The COVID-19 pandemic has had unprecedented and widespread impacts on the economy, travel, politics, education, research, and human social lives in 2020. It is widely agreed that technology will play a critical role (both short-term and long-term) in mitigating the spread of the COVID-19 and establishing a "new normal". Personal protective equipment (PPE) is minimizing exposure to virus. Social distancing is being maintained through remote work, education, and health services, online retail, and on-demand food delivery. Scalable methods for fever screening and contact tracing are being developed to quickly identify the infected, warn patient contacts of exposure, and break chains of virus transmission. In the post-pandemic world, some of these 'best' practices may continue while new ones (e.g., contact-less everything, robot/drone delivery, etc.) emerge. Confidence in the hardware is more important because of the impact of the threat. The new normal and upcoming practices/technologies have opened up the door to unfamiliar security and privacy issues. During this webinar, the moderator and panelists will discuss some of the risks, opportunities, and possible roadmaps for researchers in the field of hardware security to address them. Dr Crystal Abidin is a socio-cultural anthropologist of vernacular internet cultures, particularly influencer cultures, online visibility, and social media pop cultures especially in the Asia Pacific. She is Senior Research Fellow & ARC DECRA Fellow in Internet Studies and at the Centre for Culture and Technology at Curtin University, and Affiliate Researcher with the Media Management and Transformation Centre at Jönköping University. With some initial successes, such as support and recognization from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Sweden's Internetstiftelsen (Internet Foundation), Association of Nordic Engineers, among others, I'm reaching out to AoIR for guage interest or support from individuals in the community. Briefly, the non-profit is described as "a research-based institution inspired by the Nordics' shared cultural values of trust, transparency, and openness, with the intent to inform policy, push progressive research in themes related to privacy, including informed, consented use of personal data in AI, IoT, and e-health. Recognized and supported by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Association of Nordic Engineers (ANES), along with other international industrial, non-profit, and academic institutions (forthcoming news on these partnerships), privacy is a critical competitive advantage for industry, can further inclusion of Nordic values in European legislation, and engage citizens for whom privacy is a human right." Hi, all, I wanted to reach out to this listserv to connect with folks, who have published on the topic of Internet access (or lack thereof) in prisons as well as the communication practices and/or digital rights of detained and incarcerated populations. I've tried to keep up with scholarship/literature on this topic over the years, but I'm sure I've missed a keyword or database. If you've published on this topic, I'd love to hear from you and if the stars align, cite you. I'm particularly interested in what happens when the "Internet as a human right" discourses collide with carceral logics.
