The University of Bremen, Germany, invites applications for a university professorship at the Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research (ZeMKI) in Faculty 9, Cultural Studies. Tenured Professorship (f/m/d) - Salary group W2 - in the subject area Communication and Media Studies with the focus ‘Media Governance and Platform Economics’ Reference number: P910/20 Applicants should have a successful record in the field of empirical communication and media research with a focus on the regulation and governance of media, especially digital platforms and their value creation models. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the research cluster ‘Media Change’ in the Faculty of Cultural Studies, the acquisition of third-party funding, as well as in interdisciplinary research cooperation at the Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research (ZeMKI) and its research group ‘Communicative Figurations’ (with the Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans Bredow Institute and the University of Hamburg). The position holder will teach Communication and Media Studies in courses offered by the Faculty and, in addition to thematic courses, be able to offer courses in methods and introduction courses in the field of communication and media studies on BA and MA level. Duties will also include the further development of BA and MA programs (including internalization) and participation in the development of a structured doctoral program. Teaching Fellow in Digital Media and Culture Full time (36.5 hours per week) Fixed term contract for 12 months. The Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies (CIM) at University of Warwick seeks to appoint a 1 year full-time Teaching Fellow. You will contribute to our Masters programmes by teaching on one or more of our existing modules and may be required to develop your own module in collaboration with other members of the Centre. You will undertake module development, lecturing, seminar and workshop teaching, essay tutorials, office hours, marking of postgraduate work, and monitoring of student attendance in accordance with the Centre’s quality assurance practices. Where appropriate, you will also be required to provide pastoral support and guidance to postgraduate students during the academic year. You will possess experience in teaching and have a background in digital culture, digital media studies and social studies of technology appropriate for research-led teaching. You should have completed a PhD in a field related to the above, or have your viva scheduled. All applications must be accompanied by a CV and covering letter and names of two referees. Jean What is #ResearchersOnRead? #ResearchersOnRead is a campaign by AlgorithmWatch’s Governing Platform project. The campaign aims to collect experiences of researchers who have been ‘left on read’, i.e. ignored or snubbed by platforms as they conduct public interest research on issues like hate speech, bias, or disinformation. The stories will be compiled and published to our website as a journalistic story (or series of stories, depending on the number of submissions). These stories will help us shape a narrative about the importance of improving access to data and introducing strong platform transparency tools ahead of the discussions on EU’s proposed Digital Services Act. Recording phone interviews

Hi everyone, Given these times of social distancing, a colleague and I are conducting interviews by telephone. We are looking for solutions to record the interviews locally (so that we can transcribe them), but also maintain the privacy of the interviewees. We have considered various options (from conducting the interview over loudspeaker with a recorder next to it, to using Google Voice, to using subscription services). We have decided against services that ‘join’ the call as a conference call participant and send you the recording because we would like to maintain full control over the recorded data (again, for ethical reasons). So, we were wondering what the experience of the community here has been. Are there any recent and reliable tools that people here are using? What have you found to work well? Thanks! The first half of the book is my attempt to formulate a theory of software, building on the philosophy of Gilbert Simondon and the cultural techniques tradition.
