twarc & Twitter's v2 API

The Documenting the Now project is pleased to announce that the twarc data collection utility [1] has been updated to work with the Twitter v2 API: https://news.docnow.io/twarc2-779278e66ea0 This means that twarc can now be used to collect data from the historical archive, if you have been granted access to Twitter's Academic Research Product Track. Previously only the last 7 days or so were available from Twitter without paying them. It also means you can take advantage of new features of the v2 API such as retrieving all the tweets in a conversation thread, or entity annotations for people, places, products and organizations mentioned in tweets. While it has been fairly stable for the last ten years Twitter's canonical JSON representation of a tweet is greatly transformed by the v2 API since many aspects of the data are optional. One of the most useful features of the new version of twarc is that it will collect the maximum amount of information available for a tweet, which lets you perform your data collection knowing that all the various expansions and fields will be present when you do your research. Finally we've redesigned twarc to allow for plugins [2] which extend the twarc2 base command to let it do things like extract videos [3] from tweet data, or convert Twitter's JSON to CSV [4]. You can install these plugins just like you install twarc, and write and share your own. If you need help getting started or have feedback for us we would love to hear from you here, in comments on the blog post, or in the Documenting the Now slack [5]. Hosted by Dr Aristea Fotopoulou, part of the the seminar Series - ART/DATA/HEALTH: Communicating public health data creatively during the pandemic. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract “Data can be viewed differently depending on how we collect, frame, and interpret. Especially, data can reveal stories with social issues embedded in them when seen through artistic exploration.” Many of us are living in data-saturated societies where our everyday actions, opinions, and environmental status are being digitally traced. These data certainly open up new opportunities to develop new products or inform the decision-making of new policies. In parallel, data provide a rich context for contemporary artists to explore personally, socially, and politically. Among the critical concerns of data such as under-representation, data bias, privacy issues, unequal access, and data transparency, I artistically explored under-represented data – left-out data as outliers – by acknowledging layers of data bias through my art practice. In this talk, I will present the findings from my research on data art by seeing data as an artistic material and medium. Then, I will discuss the layers of bias and how I embrace the idea of subjectivity, bias, and the need for diverse representations of data, especially through my creative practice of the artistic exploration of data. Appiin and Catherine Flick https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jrt.2021.100010 <https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jrt.2021.100010> Abstract: Nearly every week, a technology company is introducing a new surveillance technology, varying from applying facial recognition to observing and cataloguing behaviours of the public in the Commons and private spaces, to listening and recording what we say, or mapping what we do, where we go, and who we're with—or as much of these facets of our lives as can be accessed. As such, the general public writ-large has had to wrestle with the colonization of publicly funded space, and the outcomes to each of our personal lives as a result of the massive harvesting and storing of our data, and the potential machine learning and processing applied to that data. Facebook, once content to harvest our data through its website, cookies, and apps on mobile phones and computers, has now planned to follow us more deeply into the Commons by developing new mapping technology combined with smart camera equipped Augmented Reality (AR) eyeglasses, that will track, render and record the Commons—and us with it. The resulting data will privately benefit Facebook's continued goal to expand its worldwide reach and growth.
