Call for Chapters: Open Knowledge and Wikimedia Projects in Canada

The year 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of Wikipedia and the *10th anniversary of Wikimedia Canada*, the non-profit, educational association that aims to stimulate contributions to Wikimedia projects in Canada. This double anniversary testifies to the long-term nature of Wikimedia projects and invites us to reflect on the vitality and specificity of the free knowledge movement in Canada. This call for papers aims to collect chapter proposals for a peer-reviewed book to be published in French and English. The manuscript will be submitted for publication in the series Parcours numériques at Les Presses de l'Université de Montréal. *This book aims to provide critical perspectives of the free knowledge movement in Canada since the turn of the millennium. *Who contributes, or does not contribute, to Wikipedia and other projects in the Canadian Wikimedia ecosystem? What uses or misuses are made of Wikimedia platforms by the Canadian public, and more specifically by activists, political parties, teachers, librarians, archivists, the research community, students, artists, journalists, businesses and casual users of all kinds ? Currently, Wikimedia projects in Canada are mainly fed by three linguistic communities (English, French and Atikamekw nehiromowin), which break down into countless individual and collective profiles. We wish to paint a portrait of this vast community, as diverse as it is unknown. We are calling on people who believe in the free culture movement, Wikimedians, the research community, librarians, archivists and people from all walks of life to put together an overview of the specificities, challenges and issues of the Wikimedia movement in Canada. The book will bring together around a dozen texts, each between 3000 and 3500 words. We are particularly interested in texts that offer a synthesized understanding of a project's general scope (Wikipedia, Wikisource, Commons, Wikidata, etc.), centred on the Canadian context as a whole, or on a particular community -- province, nation, region, city, etc. These texts could address, but are not limited to, the following themes: - Scholarly research on the Wikimedia Movement in Canada ; - Wikidata, the Semantic Web and the Canadian context; - Wikimedia projects within GLAMU (galleries, libraries, archives, museums, universities); - The Wikimedia movement and open education in Canada; - History and actors of Wikimedia Canada; - Wikipedia, online health and Covid-19 in Canada ; - Editorial controversies within portals related to Canada in the various language versions of Wikipedia ; - The arts community, Canadian Cities and the Wikimedia projects; - The feminist and LGBTQ+ movements in Canada in Wikimedia projects; - Contributing feedback related to Wikimedia projects; - The use of Wikimedia projects within Indigenous nations; - The reading and consultation habits of Canadian users. The target audience for the book is the Canadian general public, the international Wikimedia community and the research community. Terms and conditions of participation Proposals should be sent by Friday the 14th of May 2021 at the latest at WMCA10(a)wikimedia.ca. They can be written in French or English. Hosted by Dr Aristea Fotopoulou, part of the the seminar Series - ART/DATA/HEALTH: Communicating public health data creatively during the pandemic. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract With a focus on the first wave of the pandemic, StoryLab, an interdisciplinary Cambridge based research institute (aru) built an online infrastructure to host creative expression in form of multimedia stories from healthcare practitioners. The online archive served as a vehicle to give a voice to health and key workers who have utilised social media platforms, the power of hashtags, letters, art, music and online communication tools to share their inner thoughts, emotions and feelings. Concerns over personal protection equipment (PPE), public safety, the attack on science, mental health issues and moral injury have surfaced through individual stories as images, videos, words, music and poetry filtered through online on social media and dedicated platforms. The next stage involved the capturing personal testimonies from some of the contributors in the form of a co-created documentary, which is a work in progress. This event explores why and how this project came to life, through a joint presentation by Shreepali Patel (Concept and Research Insights), Marques Hardin (data collection and on-line architecture) and Meghan Horvath (reaching and engaging the healthcare communities). It will include film clips from the on-going documentary and links to recent events with our co-creators, healthcare workers based in the USA and UK. We champion purposeful and powerful storytelling that examines Narrative, Form & Function. Book Release: The Promise of Access: Technology, Inequality, and the Political Economy of Hope

I’ve included the description below, as well as links to upcoming events. I hope to see some of you there and I hope it’s not too long before I can talk with y’all about it in person. Best, Dan Why do we keep trying to solve poverty with technology? What makes us feel that we need to learn to code—or else? In The Promise of Access: Technology Inequality and the Political Economy of Hope, Daniel Greene argues that the problem of poverty became a problem of technology in order to manage the contradictions of a changing economy. Greene shows how the digital divide emerged as a policy problem and why simple technological solutions to complex social issues continue to appeal to politicians and professionals who should (and often do) know better. Greene shows why it is so hard to get rid of the idea—which he terms the access doctrine—that the problem of poverty can be solved with the right tools and the right skills. This way of thinking is so ingrained that is adopted by organizations that fight poverty—which often refashion themselves to resemble technology startups. Drawing on years of fieldwork, Greene explores how this plays out in the real world, examining organizational change in technology startups, public libraries, and a charter school in Washington, DC. He finds that as the libraries and school pursue technological solutions, they win praise and funding but also marginalize and alienate the populations they serve. Greene calls for new political alliances that can change the terms on which we understand technology and fight poverty. Good afternoon, and apologies for cross-posting: I'm writing to announce a series of events that I have co-organized with Thorsten Ries (UT Austin, Germanic Studies) and the UT Austin iSchool colloquium series. The first event has already occurred, but there's still time to join us for the next two panels! We also have a video recording available from the first event (See below). Series Description: This series features international subject expert talks from the libraries and archives sector, a digital investigation collective and from the cybersecurity sector to consider born-digital evidence from a Historical Scholarship and Humanities perspective. Our digital present poses challenges to long-term preservation and curation of born-digital archives, but also to their cautious selection, critical appraisal and methodological analysis and interpretation as historical evidence. Establishing, proving and maintaining the chain of digital evidence, evaluating the evidential status of born-digital sources and interpreting the traces of historical digital events will be the daily practice of historians studying our present time. The talk series Born-digital Evidence and Historical Scholarship is a starter for the conversation about how we establish this practice and build the skillsets, standards and procedures for Historical Scholarship and the Humanities in coordination with libraries and archives. EVENT 1: Aric Toler (Bellingcat) and Charlotte Godart (Bellingcat) Date: April 12, 10-11:30am CST Aric Toler is the training and research director at Bellingcat, an online publication specialized in open-source intelligence. Aric's research including Russian intelligence operations, the war in the Donbas, and the 2014 downing of Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 over eastern Ukraine. Aric received his Master's degree in Slavic Languages & Literatures from the University of Kansas in 2013 and has since been working with Bellingcat. Charlotte Godart is an open source investigator & trainer for Bellingcat. She researches conflict zones, breaking news events, and the spread of disinformation. She creates online training material that is available for anyone interested in pursuing digital verification through the Bellingcat website. She also travels globally to teach online verification techniques and methodology to journalists, researchers, activists, and lawyers. He has a particular interest in software preservation and the use of emulation to maintain access to born digital information. Before joining Yale, Euan helped to establish the data archive for official statistics at Statistics New Zealand, in addition to working in the Digital Continuity team at Archives New Zealand and consulting for Deloitte in Australia on Information Management. David Bliss is the Systems and Digital Archivist at UT Libraries, where he is responsible for a variety of digital preservation infrastructure and processes for libraries collections. Prior to April 2021, he was the Digital Processing Archivist at the Benson Latin American Collection at UT Austin, focused primarily on implementing and supporting post-custodial digitization projects based at partner repositories in Latin America. David is a 2017 graduate of the UT School of Information.
