Hi Cory, I agree with previous answers that the university probably has some standardized protocol for handling data (my university, for example, demands cloud storage within their own servers, etc.) In terms of using the data, I have found that assigning participants ID numbers is pretty impersonal and leads to confusion, I tend to prefer pseudonyms. If a quote or a participant could be identified even through a pseudonym (for example, because their situation or context is very specific), I've found using 'composite' characters (where I merge two participants in one fictional one) useful, as well as simply changing some participants' attributes (age, location, job, etc.). Ideally, keeping it still relevant and significant but also making it harder to trace back? Hope this helps! Hello everyone, I've been searching the last couple of weeks for a data set that contains social media use by platform (e.g. Facebook, Twitter), by country, and by year. I haven't been able to find a single freely available tabular data set out there that fits the bill. I've found a few that do individual countries, but gathering each individual country's data, per year, is a time sink I'd like to avoid. So does such a unified data set exist? CFP: Surveillance Stories: Imagining Surveillance Futures (Surveillance & Society)

Dear Colleagues, We are very excited to announce a call for contributions to a joint Dialogue Section-Art Forum of Surveillance & Society we are calling "Surveillance Stories: Imagining Surveillance Futures." Storytelling has the ability to capture the imagination and to attract a wide audience. Stories can also generate important meanings, engage metaphors, and explore new possibilities in ways that conventional academic papers often cannot, or at least typically do not. Therefore, for this special project, we invite contributions that creatively engage with the possibilities of the surveillant future. Submissions should inform how we ought to think about surveillance, regulate surveillance, or study surveillance to achieve/avoid the futures depicted in the stories. These pieces can take the form of a short narrative piece (~800 to 2000-words, if text-based; ~2-5 minutes if time-based media), including speculative stories. They can also involve artistic interventions that explore and visualize this topic. Contributions can be fictional, quasi-fictional, or nonfiction stories (presented in a narrative fashion) that draw on surveillance studies research and theory to imagine what possible surveillance futures might look like. Our interest here is to encourage stories that imagine utopian as well as dystopian futures, and that utilize creative text, images, video, and other forms of artistic expression (the range of media for artworks that can be presented is subject to the technological limitations of the journal's platform, but can include video and limited photography or images-please get in touch if you have questions about what might be possible). For selected pieces, we will also request that authors include a closing paragraph or two at the end of each piece that specifically links the elements of the story to existing surveillance studies research (including research previously published in Surveillance & Society or elsewhere, or that builds on the authors' own fieldwork or other research). (Media not based in text should also include a transcript of dialogue, basic description of the visuals, etc.) Along with the narration of surveillant futures as a mode of creative address, our goal with this special project is to make space for explorations that focus on and derive from various regions and perspectives often under-represented in surveillance studies research. We are interested in bringing into conversation a collection of works that capture a range of approaches and from a multitude of viewpoints. As such, we will prioritize submissions against those criteria, in addition to excellence and fit with the full set of accepted pieces. I am pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the 12th Australian Media Traditions conference to be held virtually later this year. Details are listed below. Please share with colleagues and across appropriate networks. 12th Australian Media Traditions Conference Wednesday 29 - Thursday 30 September 2021 Virtual/Online Call for Papers The 12th Australian Media Traditions Conference will be hosted by Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia. The conference will be virtual, with further details to be advised. The AMT2021 conference theme is “Exploring the Regions”, and will focus on questions and issues relating to the diverse history of rural and regional media, both in Australia and abroad. The conference theme aims to address the history and importance of rural and regional media. From the initial introduction and establishment, through to more recent developments. We invite papers that focus on any of the following: media institutions (newspaper, magazine, radio, television and cinema), advertising, audiences, booksellers and booktowns, digital gaming, journalism, libraries, media preservation and archiving, policy and regulation, publishers and printers, and technological developments. The organisers also wish to advance discussion on the importance of media preservation and archiving. Topics to be discussed could include: * The establishment and/or disbandment of rural and/or regional media; * Rural and regional media research in the context of local content and local audiences; * Comparative research associated with rural, regional and metropolitan media (Australian and international); * The role and history of rural and regional indigenous media; * Rural and regional media as a news source for communities; * The production of rural and regional community media; * The history of memory, place and/or emotions; * Methodologies and approaches to media preservation and archiving. Proposal Information Paper and panel presentation proposals should attempt to critically engage in some way with the conference theme, “Exploring the Regions”. However, proposals related to other aspects of media history will also be considered. Practical workshops should focus on media preservation and archiving. The organising committee strongly encourages proposals from media practitioners, postgraduate students, independent scholars and local historians. PAPERS: Papers for the conference will be 20 mins. Challenges and Considerations for Misinformation Research

Hi AoIR-ists! I wanted to announce that the Center for an Informed Public at the University of Washington is planning a virtual workshop, “Challenges and Considerations for Misinformation Research<https://www.cip.uw.edu/2021/04/05/cip-challenges-considerations-misinformat…>,” on May 6 that will bring together academic teams researching mis- and disinformation to reflect on research best practices, data ethics and hurdles, and the normative and epistemological foundations of our collective work. The CIP invites academic and academic-adjacent researchers who have engaged in rapid-impact research projects and media engagement around misinformation events and conspiracy theories — particularly related to COVID-19, recent elections and the broader impacts of mis- and disinformation. The plan is to conduct four sessions over the course of a morning (two simultaneous sessions) before a larger wrap-up session. The four sessions will cover: research practices; data collection, use and ethics; communicating findings; and commitments to ethics and welfare.
