Will academic Twitter exist under Elon Musk? Will there be more or less data? More or less urgent issues to study? Will the "Fail Whale" show up again after 75% of the staff is gone? Who will do content moderation? Is this a FastTrack to the next violent uprising in the US? I am curious what people on this particular list think is about to happen. After 12 years featuring the formal study of Twitter data I am completely burned out. Not on the challenges, nor the art and science of the tasks. I still love talking to students and faculty who have chosen Twitter as the object of their research. The data has never been more widely available and the positive uses of it can be inspiring. It's the voluminous amounts of hate I see in my own research. Also the systemic weaponization of Twitter against democratic systems of government globally. As an original Board Member and the Treasurer of a 501 (c)(6) called "The Big Boulder Initiative" I was working as a liaison to academia with a group of industry people on the "long term preservation of the social data industry." The industry survived, but the ideals aspired to have not. We offered this 2-minute Lawrence Lessig-inspired vision of the challenges about 7 years ago: "Why Texifter Joined the Big Boulder Initiative" https://vimeo.com/129423037 Lessig was right. On the Internet, architecture is the most powerful regulator. The architecture of Twitter, with corporate ads featured on insurrectionist and other problematic timelines, is now a persistent threat to democratic systems of government without a single day of Musk governance. The insurrection January 6, 2021 was planned in the open on Twitter. There were advertisements from familiar brands in every seditious timeline. Evolving tactics using Twitter trains (tagging 30 like-minded users), notification-rich replies, the ReTweet functionality, gamification, domestic and foreign meme warfare, the idolatry of influence via misinformation, bots and trolls, as well as paid amplifiers of all manner and variety. The "digital soldiers" we found in the Canadian election of 2019 (fake Americans who hated Trudeau but liked RT, Russia Today and Southfront) were openly planning a QAnon-inspired "storm" which ultimately was the first coup attempt in two centuries of American democracy. I briefed the US/UK Intelligence Community (staff from the Joint Chiefs, JSOC, etc.) February 12, 2020 via the Strategic Multilayer Assessment using open source information from Twitter. Things have since gotten much worse, not better, since that briefing. CALL FOR PAPERS Algorithms for Her? 2: Feminist approaches to digital infrastructures, cultures and economies March 23rd-24th 2023 – Sheffield University Our daily lives are increasingly governed by algorithmic processes of selection, identification and discrimination. This international symposium focuses on the intersectional forms of injustice that algorithms—and the systems in which they are embedded—help to propagate and sustain. Given the significance and ubiquity of such processes in everyday life, and their disproportionate effects on those marginalised across intersections of gender, sexuality, class and race, this event will create a dedicated space for the discussion of algorithmic forms of oppression and inequality. Algorithms for Her? 2 seeks to support in-depth analysis of algorithms—together with their functions and entanglements—with critical feminist works that meaningfully examine the production and ethics of bias. “Newness” is often fetishised in analyses of digital culture. The approaches sidelined by this fetishisation are often those by women, nonbinary folks and scholars of colour, who have struggled to have their contributions included in dominant canons of thought. In recent years we have welcomed the increased visibility of critical perspectives on algorithms that are inclusive, intersectional, reflective and feminist, but there is still work to be done. Following the success of the first Algorithms for Her? event in January 2020, this conference seeks to give a platform to perspectives on algorithms and algorithmic culture that are still under-represented in the academy. We welcome both traditional conference presentations (15 minutes in length) and creative alternatives such as performances or artistic interventions. We invite contributions relating to… – Intersectional feminist work critically examining machine learning, content moderation and algorithms (broadly defined). – Intersectional feminist work examining software/tools/app design and infrastructure. – Intersectional feminist work on platform labour and inequalities. – Feminist methodologies for studying and teaching algorithms and the ethical questions they raise. – Industry/nonprofit cases of addressing discrimination/bias sustained by and ‘within’ technologies. Apropos of the discussion about where to go when Musk takes over Twitter, I wanted to share a piece I just posted on The Conversation pushing back against the tendency in news (and some scholarship) to reduce alternative social media to right-wing social media sites, such as Gab: https://theconversation.com/citizens-social-media-can-provide-an-antidote-t… I'd like us to start talking about citizens' social media (which I believe the fediverse might be) as opposed to both corporate social media like Twitter and right-wing social media like Gab. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SMARTCOMP 2023 -- Call for Workshops Proposal https://smartcomp.isis.vanderbilt.edu/ June 26-30, 2023, Nashville, Tennessee ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SMARTCOMP 2023 is the 9th edition of the premier conference on Smart Computing and will be held in Nashville, Tennessee, hosted by Vanderbilt University, hopefully as a fully in presence event. Smart Computing is a multidisciplinary domain based on the synergistic influence of advances in sensor-based technologies, Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems, edge computing, big data analytics, machine learning, cognitive computing, and artificial intelligence. Applications of smart computing can be found in different societal domains including, but not limited to, transportation, energy, environmental protection, smart and connected communities, healthcare, banking, industrial systems, entertainment, and social media. SMARTCOMP 2023 will provide an international technical forum for experts from industry and academia to exchange ideas and present results of on-going research in most state-of-the-art areas of computing, sensing, and communications in heterogeneous application domains. The Workshops co-chairs of SMARTCOMP 2023 invite proposals for half or full day workshops affiliated with the conference, held in Nashville, Tennessee during June 26-30, 2023. The purpose of the workshops is to stimulate discussions on state-of-the-art, emerging, visionary, and also controversial topics in the area of Smart Computing, and to create new opportunities for attendees' interactions in a less formal and more sharply focused context than at the conference itself. Therefore, workshops should be organized to promote lively interactions, and appropriate plans should be described in the written workshop proposals. Papers presented in the SMARTCOMP 2023 workshops will be included in the conference proceedings and in IEEE Xplore. The organizers of the accepted workshops are required to publicize the workshop through disseminating the call for papers, soliciting submissions, organizing the review process, and deciding upon the final workshop program. At least one organizer should be physically present at the workshop in the case of SMARTCOMP will take place at least partially in presence and there will be no travel restrictions due to the pandemic situation. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Each workshop proposal must include the following: * the title and acronym of the workshop; * the names, addresses, and short bios of up to 200 words for each organizer; workshops may have up to three organizers. It is strongly recommended that organizers belong to at least two different institutions. * A brief description (up to 2 page) including: o the technical issues that the workshop will address, o the reasons the workshop is of interest to the SMARTCOMP community, o a short discussion on other available workshops and conferences on similar topics and an outline of why the proposed workshop is unique; o a description of the communities groups the workshop aims to attract, o the names of potential Program Committee members; o the planned format of the workshop (e.g., keynotes, paper presentations, posters, demos) and duration (e.g., one-day, half-day), including a strategy to facilitate lively discussions and involvement of the attendees - possibly in an online or hybrid format; o if applicable, a description of past versions of the workshop, including dates, organizers, number of submitted and accepted papers, and number of attendees; o if the workshop is going to be organized for the first time, an estimate of the expected number of submissions and attendees; o a tentative Call for Papers (as complete as possible); o a description of the plans for publicity and workshop Website. My PhD project is about associating digital art and data visualisation to create entertaining data storytelling content. As I sift through the long tail of this AoIR thread of the last few days - I was literally in a cabin in the woods when the Musk deal went through, so just catching up on emails and kitchen sinks - I would have to second the Discord suggestion. I'm a relative newbie to that platform - using it for AI art, NFT and ML research - but have been impressed with the flexibility of the tools and how servers can be tailored to support particular needs of each community. I also like how I can be as actively present or distantly curious. Communication tools are solid with an emphasis on latency and stability. It was built by and for gamers <https://www.protocol.com/discord> but it's so much more than that dna might suggest. I know a few academics who use it to compliment their LMS sites, some notes on its pedagogical benefits here <https://www.profweb.ca/en/publications/digital-tools/discord-an-efficient-c…>. Obviously it doesn't take much to improve on a Universtity LMS platform. *sigh* Nonetheless, I can imagine AoIR users really exploiting the possibilities there.
