Dear colleagues, The American Studies program at Yale University recruits its next cohort of PhD students. Adding to our strengths in history, politics, and questions of race and gender in American Studies with a transnational lens, we can now supervise in areas related to critical information studies. New areas of supervision include platforms studies, digital labor, critical data studies, artificial intelligence and society, digital warfare, and migration and technology. Some points about the PhD program: * The program is fully funded for all students for six years. Dear all, Calling all dating app researchers. The deadline to submit proposals for the IPrA 2023 conference in Brussels 9th-14th July 2023 is coming up on November 1. We invite you to consider joining our panel “Communicative practices in online dating”. This panel brings together studies of textual interaction among dating app users, analysing in detail the interactional features of these encounters. Drawing particularly on Conversation Analysis and cognate areas such as interactional pragmatics, Membership Categorization Analysis (MCA), and Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA), the panel explores a diverse but interrelated set of issues describing communicative practices in online dating. Such issues may involve but are not limited to the ways that users use location information and orient to place to generate topics and to organise offline meetings, the negotiation of gender norms and practices associated with online dating, and the relationship between education, age, and forms of talk. The analyses in the panel are expected to pay attention to the distinctive textual features of these chats such as the structure of actions (e.g. compliments, invitations etc.) and messages (cf. Licoppe 2021), practices involving humour and flirting, and the sequential organization of interaction. Papers could also address the role of profile information in structuring the interaction, the use of particular communicative practices such as emoji, or platform affordances to facilitate particular types of conversation. Together, these papers provide an important advancement on existing studies of face-to-face dating (Korobov 2011; Stokoe 2010; Turowetz & Hollander 2012), and a critical contribution to the small but growing body of work on online dating and language (Kavroulaki 2021; Licoppe 2020; Mortensen 2017; Thompson 2022), showing how modern technologies are radically altering the ways that people manage dating. In partnership with the Associated Press, we just published an investigation revealing that four major, national internet service providers–AT&T, Lumen, Verizon, and EarthLink–have been charging customers in the same city the same price for wildly different home internet speeds. And the addresses that were offered the worst deals disproportionately tended to live in neighborhoods that were lower-income, less White, and historically redlined. For example, in New Orleans, we found AT&T offering an internet connection at one address that was hundreds of times slower than what was offered at another address in town–both for $55 a month. The slow speed offer didn’t even come close to meeting the current FCC definition of broadband. Our investigation is based on an analysis of more than 800,000 internet service offers made on real-world addresses in 38 cities across the country. This investigation builds on a 2018 NDIA report <https://www.digitalinclusion.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/NDIA-Tier-Flatt…> from Bill Callahan and Angela Siefer about “tier flattening,” a practice where ISPs eliminate low-priced speed tiers—thereby pushing customers who can only get slow connections have to pay the same as customers with better connections.
