[Apologies for cross posting] Interested in questioning how gender and sexuality are constructed in media production and consumption, feminist scholarship has been highlighting the importance of identifying dominant ideas and discourses and how symbolic materials are outcomes of social arrangements that legitimate an essential division of society. As digitisation has taken place, concerns have also been directed to the gendered dimension of human embodiment and humans’ relational practices with technology. Research shows that collective narrative processes on mobile app-based platforms enhance power relations by perpetuating hegemonic masculinities and femininities anchored upon heteronormativity. Masculinities and femininities represent a culturally imagined, as well as discursively and semiotically conveyed, ideal of what it means to be and behave like a man and a woman. Understanding technology as producing meaning, subjectivity, and agency shaped by power relations and adopting a critical perspective of contemporary digital media, this pre-conference invites scholars to analyse mobile apps affordances, grammars, platform politics and content, as well as their uses, appropriations and embodiment, in order to make sense on how they are shaping hegemonic normativity and changing gender roles. This pre-conference welcomes theoretical and empirical abstracts that use qualitative, quantitative or mixed methodologies and focus on these topics: - How do the uses of m-apps dialogue with social and political contexts? - How does gender identity performances vary across different m-apps?; - To what extent do uses intertwine with the affordances of these apps?; - How do gender identities are negotiated and imagined in user experiences of mobile apps?; - To what extent mediated interfaces reproduce or challenge normative imaginaries of gender? Abstracts focusing on other topics within gender, sexuality and app studies are also welcome. The organisation of the pre-conference will publish a book with the articles that may be submitted. Dear AIR-L Members, Recent changes to Gmail security settings meant that the list software was suddenly identifying all gmail and gmail-based addresses as spam addresses which led to a huge number of people being automatically (temporarily) removed for the AIR-L. We have subsequently manually re-added almost everyone who was inadvertently removed and hope the issue has been resolved between the listserv software and Gmail. Call for Papers (deadline for submission: 1 May 2022) Wednesday, 19 October 2022 Aarhus (Denmark) The ECREA pre-conference is organized by DigiWorld ( https://digidemo.ifkw.lmu.de/digiworld/) a scientific collaboration network of scholars that aims at international comparisons of election campaign strategies in digital communication channels, which currently is bringing together researchers from 17 countries. The long-term goals of DigiWorld include building a continuous research network dealing with digital campaigning, user engagement, and factors influencing it. The pre-conference, however, is open to researchers both from and beyond the DigiWorld network. The health of digital democracy has become under attack from political actors who actively use social media to spread disinformation and hate speech. To what extent are these (digital) propaganda techniques used in democracies during election times? How do they affect democratic processes and participation? We want to answer these questions by revealing and comparing the online communication of parties and politicians across the political spectrum on social media during national elections in various democracies. To discuss the use of communication strategies of party and candidate accounts on social media platforms during national elections, we are particularly interested in bringing together scholars who explore the use of such platforms in the local and international arena from both the global north and the global south. It especially welcomes contributions that explore this phenomenon from a comparative perspective between social and cultural groups. CALL FOR PAPERS [deadline extended] Drones in Society: New Visual Aesthetics 8th and 9th September 2022, Halifax Hall, Sheffield, UK You can join this conference in person or online Drones are an increasingly important social phenomenon. Their use has the potential to change the way people see the world in the same way other technologies have, like smartphones and the internet. Generating questions that go beyond safety and security issues, their widespread use opens a debate to rethinking the relationship between media and mobility (Hildebrand, 2021), material practice (Howley, 2017), and vertical power (Kaplan, 2018) (just to mention a few). Drones are now the latest technological advancement to have a significant impact in the world we live in offering opportunities for new forms of visual communication, culture and practices. Confirmed keynote speaker: *Julia M. Hildebrand*, Assistant Professor of Communication at Eckerd College, author of *Aerial Play: Drone Medium, Mobility, Communication, and Culture - Geographies of Media. * We invite the submission of proposals for the interdisciplinary conference ‘Drones in Society: New Visual Aesthetics’, which will be held on 8th and 9 th September at Halifax Hall in Sheffield, UK. This 2-day conference will be hosted by the Department of Sociological Studies at the University of Sheffield. The updated deadline for submission is *9th of May 2022*. Animated videos on click farms in Brazil

Next Monday, [1]DigiLabour Lab will launch two animated videos about click farms on its [2]YouTube channel. In two episodes, it tells the story of Joana, who lost her job and starts working for these platforms with the function of clicking and commenting on profiles of influencers, celebrities and politicians. Along her journey, she faces deactivations, fake accounts, coaches selling mentorships, and parallel markets of fake accounts and bots. Available in [3]English and [4]Portuguese, "In the Click Farms" is a result of the research [5]"Click Farm Platforms in Brazil and Colombia: work conditions and worker organizing", funded by the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. The investigation, coordinated by Rafael Grohmann, showed how this work activity is the deep web of platform labor in Brazil, renewing and updating t he historic informality in the country. The research alerts to the relationship between work for click farm platforms and the disinformation industry. "Workers receive US$0,0013 per task and, through fake accounts, feed likes and comments on Instagram and TikTok", says principal investigator Rafael Grohmann. According to him, platforms are Brazilian and their customers, in general, are influencers - including in the health area - and small commercial establishments. Workers discover the platforms through Youtube channels promising extra income and, little by little, they know WhatsApp groups with names like "growing on platforms" and "TikTok Instagram sales". In these groups, there is a parallel market for fake accounts, bots, and photo packs, where each worker is a potential reseller. DigiLabour also published an [6]infographic explaining this process. The animated video "In the click farms" contributes to the popularization and dissemination of science by explaining the main results of the research in easy and accessible language. ***CALL FOR PAPERS*** THEME: Domesticity and Persona (Volume 8, Issue 2) ISSUE EDITORS: Dr Kim Barbour (University of Adelaide) and Dr Michael Humphrey (Colorado State University) JOURNAL WEBSITE: https://ojs.deakin.edu.au/index.php/ps Revolutions political, social, personal, technological, and beyond have changed the way many people relate to the word “domestic.” At the same time, the feeling of home is still very familiar to many. This became readily evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, as homes became the scene for a far more expansive set of life activities. For some, rather than crossing beyond a private domain to the shared world, the shared world peered into a slice of millions of private lives, prepared neatly for the eye of a webcam, or interrupted by passing pets, partners, and children. For others, the external gaze was resisted, views carefully obstructed to preserve the sanctity of the domestic sphere. For still others, the domestic space became (or continued to be) a place of surveillance, isolation, imprisonment, and repression. In the midst of these changes, both new and old, we are calling for theoretical, critical, empirical, and/or creative responses that investigate the persona in domesticity. Which personas flourish in domestic light and which shrink? Who expands or constricts the boundaries of domesticity? What freedoms and/or restrictions await, and for whom? How do we understand domesticity and personas in a time of collapsed contexts and multipurpose spaces?
