Dear colleagues, We invite you to submit your research to the HICSS Communication, Digital Conversation, and Media Technologies minitrack. This minitrack focuses on the study of communication taking place on digital and social media. Communication is the making of meaning and culture among people, with growing interconnections with a world of human-machine interactions. In mediated form, communication can involve text, emoticons, audio, images, video, virtual or augmented reality, or any combination thereof. The minitrack welcomes research on all forms of digital communication, including interpersonal, organizational, and mass communication, as well as a wide variety of contexts for communication, such as news, politics, entertainment, education, social movements and activism, etc. Additionally, this minitrack attends to the emerging interplay of human-machine communication—as evident, for example, in recent developments of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and the tools they afford for conversation and communication. The HICSS-58 conference will be held January 7-10, 2025, at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, USA. Submissions will be accepted until June 15, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. HST This minitrack brings together researchers and innovators to explore Communication, Digital Conversation, and Media Technologies and their implications; to raise new socio-technical, theoretical, methodological, ethical, pedagogical, linguistic, and social questions; and to suggest new methods, perspectives, and design approaches. The minitrack is the successor of the Mediated Conversation minitrack, which itself was a successor of the Persistent Conversation minitrack (established by Tom Erickson and Susan Herring at HICSS in 1999). The original minitrack was focused on the novelty of conversational persistence. With the prevalence of mediated conversation in contemporary life and a much wider landscape of digital communication that has emerged in recent years, we are called upon to consider a broader field of issues. This minitrack explores Communication, Digital Conversation, and Media Technologies and their implications 1) to raise new socio-technical, theoretical, methodological, ethical, pedagogical, linguistic, and social questions and 2) to suggest new methods, perspectives, and design approaches. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - Communication dynamics (from mass to interpersonal to other forms) that shape the development of digital media spaces and their role in public and private life - The role of artificial intelligence in communication, including in areas such as mediated conversation, news, and social media - Ethics of communication, digital conversation, and media technologies: e.g., privacy, safety, deception, freedom of speech, security, and information warfare - Human-machine communication and related forms of conversation (e.g., chatbots) - The role of conversation in understanding the interplay between media producers and media audiences - The dynamics and analysis of large-scale conversation systems (e.g., MOOCs and big data applications) - Methods for analyzing communication, mediated conversation, and media technologies: qualitative, quantitative, data analytics, etc. - Innovation in the intersections of communication, mediated conversation, and media technologies - The dark side of mediated conversation: e.g., hate speech, bullying, information overload - Domain-specific applications, opportunities, and challenges of communication, digital conversation, and media technologies (e.g., in education, healthcare, social movements, government, citizen participation, management, and news media) - Studies of virtual communities and the discourses in digital spaces - Novel properties of platforms as they relate to communication/conversation dynamics - Power dynamics and conversational patterns among social media users - The role of communication, conversation, and media technologies in knowledge management and organizations - Conversation visualizations and analytics - The role of listeners, lurkers, and silent interactions Fast-track journal opportunity: Authors of papers accepted for presentation in the minitrack will be offered the opportunity to submit an extended version of their papers for consideration for fast-track publication in the ACM journal ACM Transaction on Social Computing (https://tsc.acm.org/) Communication, Digital Conversation, and Media Technologies minitrack co-chairs: Seth C. CfP: Digital Ethnography in Post-Pandemic Times: Reflections, Implications, and Innovations Conveners: Suzana Jovicic, Philipp Budka, Monika Palmberger Since the COVID-19 pandemic has revitalised and boosted interest in digital ethnography, the question arises as to what remains in its aftermath. Has digital ethnography entered the mainstream, and the digital merged with ethnographic research in an obviously profoundly digitised and digitalised world? Or has it disappeared back into the fringes, unphased by the short-lived interest? What do we actually mean when we talk about digital ethnography: online, remote, post-digital and should we discard these terms altogether? What methodological and ethical insights, movements, setbacks, reflections, innovations and (inter)disciplinary cross-references have emerged in the wake of global developments that have forced ethnographers to rethink their research in unprecedented ways? In this panel organised by the Digital Ethnography Initiative (DEI), we explore the state of digital ethnography (defined as ethnographic research with and through the “digital” and not limited to remote/online) as it emerges from turbulent but perhaps also fruitful times. We invite a wide range of contributions discussing methodological issues, conundrums, dilemmas, twists and turns of contemporary digital ethnography, based on original research. The contributors will be invited to subsequently write a short blog entry for the DEI blog, based on the papers presented at the panel. Deadline Extended: CFP for Societal & User-Centered Privacy in AI (SUPA) Workshop

Privacy is critical to the responsible development of AI. However, the rapid evolution of AI, including the rapid deployment of generative AI, has resulted in new privacy risks with far-reaching societal consequences. In this half-day workshop, we aim to bring together academics, practitioners, designers, and advocates across civil society and regulation to evaluate the challenges and opportunities for user-centered privacy in AI. By nurturing a multidisciplinary environment, this workshop aims to create a network of scholars committed to addressing: - Challenges in implementing privacy measures, including issues in Usability and User Trust and interactions with AI privacy. - Empirical studies that gather attitudinal or behavioral insights related to privacy expectations for AI, privacy solutions or techniques - Effects of emerging AI technologies (e.g., generative AI) on the privacy of at-risk, vulnerable or marginalized populations (e.g., persons with disabilities, underrepresented populations, children, or gender communities) - Case studies showcasing successful user experience (UX) strategies in privacy-preserving AI applications - Open-source tools to demonstrate the integration of privacy measures into AI models - Best practices for UX design in choosing appropriate privacy parameters and associated trade-offs. - Ethical considerations for AI and user privacy - Challenges and opportunities in improving and enforcing regulation that protects privacy in AI This half-day in-person workshop solicits submissions across two categories: (1) research papers, and (2) position papers. Potential attendees are asked to submit by May 30th 2024 via our submission site ( https://supa2024.usenix.hotcrp.com/) Papers should be at most 4 pages in length (excluding references) and should use the SOUPS template (word <https://www.usenix.org/sites/default/files/conference-files/usenix2021_soup…> or latex <https://www.usenix.org/sites/default/files/conference-files/usenix2024_soup…>). Shorter, more focused submissions (2-4 pages) are encouraged and authors are encouraged to ensure submissions relay the importance, relevance, and contributions of the work regardless of the length of the submission. Submissions will be evaluated based on their relevance and potential to generate critical discussion. Accepted submissions will be made available on the workshop website. The recent and widespread release of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and applications sparked a lot of questions about their impact on users and the societies in which they live. Such potential changes need to be put into a historical perspective: with each technological innovation came hopes and fears related to their putative effects on society, often through the lens of techno-determinism. From mass media to the information age, to digital transmedia, to generative AI, the world contemplated the dawn of the information society and the democratization of access to knowledge, the advent of citizen participation for all, or the potential of persistent virtual worlds (the “metaverse”), transhumanism and augmented reality. At the same time, as many concerns have grown across social discourses on media, information, and technology: from screen passivity and addictions to media violence and pornography, from online sexual predators and cyberbullying to fake news and conspiracy theories, from infobesity to generalized data surveillance and the collapse of our democratic societies in the post-truth era, etc. At each of these stages, individuals and social groups have developed various forms of literacies to thrive in a world populated with these technologies and to mitigate their potential deleterious effects. With every significant technological innovation, a need to reassess the role of media / information / digital literacies arises and, with it, the temptation to reinvent them to "keep pace" with evolving technologies. With such reinvention comes the risk of changing the target, scattering the benefits of educational initiatives, and losing sight of the whole picture of what (new) literacies are and what they support. *CHARTING THE (DIS)CONTINUITIES IN LITERACIES* The theme for this year’s edition of the ReDMIL summer school is: “Charting the (dis)continuities in literacies”. We wish to inject a historical dimension into our examination of research in media / information / digital literacy and devote some of our attention to the changes in media, media practices, audiences and user communities, but also in imaginaries and narratives that embody the hopes and fears we place in media and information technology. We want to ask what these changes force us to reconsider in research on media / information / digital literacy, how they are accompanied by changes in the way we theorize media, information, technology and literacies, the way we conceive our research methods, our epistemologies, and our axiological positions. In reflecting on these developments, we are more attentive to continuities than to chiasms and so-called paradigm shifts. Our summer school intends to bring together young researchers who are challenged by these issues with the objective of considering these questions in a long-term perspective. * How can research account for generational changes in people’s relationship to media without getting muddled up in the use of pseudo-concepts (e.g. the myth of the “digital native”)? * How are age-old conceptual debates (protectionism vs. empowerment, cognitive vs. socio-cultural approaches to literacies, the complementarity of critical thinking and participation, …) challenged or reinvigorated by the evolution of digital media practices? * How do our methods evolve to integrate the aspiration for more inclusiveness, for an increased attention to marginalized or under-represented user communities, or for the decolonization of the media? * What epistemologies can we devise when agentivity and knowledge may no longer be the prerogative of the human being alone? * What kind of new avenues for research do technical innovations open? * What are the disciplinary convergences that these evolutions call for? How can interdisciplinarity be channeled to strengthen research on new literacies? *SCOPE AND GOAL OF THE REDMIL 2024 LITERACY DOCTORAL SUMMER SCHOOL* In this context, the ReDMIL 2024 doctoral summer school aims at contributing to the convergence between digital, media and information literacy research by bringing together researchers from all three communities, to foster the scientific debate and explore connections between them. The summer school is an international training program that will alternate between framing presentations by senior researchers and the in-depth discussion of emerging research by participating PhD students. Five *keynotes speakers *have confirmed their participation to the 2024 edition: * *Gianna Cappello*, University of Palermo (Italy) * *Normand Landry*, Université TELUQ (Canada), * *Julian Sefton-Green*, Deakin University (Australia), * *Leo Van Audenhove*, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium), * *Emily Vraga*, University of Minnesota (USA). The summer school is organized on September 9th-12th, 2024 by the Groupe de Recherche en Médiation des Savoirs (Knowledge Mediation Research Group) at the Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium, in partnership with the Canada Research Chair in Media Education and Human Rights (Université TELUQ). The goal of this summer school is to allow PhD students engaged in the field of digital literacy, media literacy or information literacy: * to benefit from the expertise of renowned researchers in their field, though theoretical and methodological presentations; * to present their own research to an audience composed of these experts, as well as other PhD students and researchers; * to work collectively to the enhancement of their research work with other participants; * to improve their knowledge of the research undertaken by their peers. The Summer School will start with a poster session (Sept. 9th), followed by six half-day workshops (Sept. 10th-12th) on the following topics: * theoretical frameworks in the study of digital, media and information literacies; * epistemological issues in new literacies research; * methods for observing, documenting, and assessing literacies and their associated educational practices and policies; * designing research with social relevance and valorizing research results in society. Each half-day workshop will open with one plenary talk by renowned experts, followed by a session focused on the research work of the participating PhD students, exploring them from the perspectives developed in the plenary talks. In addition to presenting an outline of their work at the opening poster session, each participating PhD student will have the opportunity to present their work in up to two sessions, on two different topics. In relation to the theme of the 2024’s edition “From mass media to generative AI: Charting the (dis)continuities in literacies“, participants will be invited to question the axiological positions that underly their research. The Summer School will also allow for numerous informal interactions (including a networking dinner) between experts, researchers, and PhD students. Participation and presentation from PhD students at the ReDMIL Summer School will be rewarded by 5 ECTS (or equivalent) for their doctoral training. *SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS* The summer school is targeted at PhD students who develop their research in the following areas: * the study of new literacies: observing, documenting and/or assessing new literacies; * the study of educational initiatives in media literacy, information literacy or digital literacy practiced by a variety of actors (teachers and educators, employers, associations, parents, media and tech companies, …); * the study of public policies in the fields of digital, media and information literacies at any geographical level; * or any other topic related to digital literacy, media literacy, or information literacy. PhD students wishing to present and discuss their doctoral research at the summer school are invited to submit an application, including the following: * A brief curriculum vitae (one to two pages); * A presentation of their doctoral research in a maximum of 1500 words (references not included), including the following four sections: o Problem or societal issue that their thesis intends to answer; o Research question, hypotheses (in the case of a hypothetico-deductive approach) and theoretical framework of their thesis; o Data collection and analysis method; o Expected results: the usefulness of their research, from an academic and/or societal point of view (e.g. for the world of education, for the political world, for the media industry). * An abstract of the presentation of their doctoral research in a maximum of 300 words. Applications must be sent in the form of a single file (word or pdf) including CV and presentation to info-redmil(a)uclouvain.be by *June 14th, 2024 *at the latest. Candidates will be personally notified of the acceptance of their participation on June 17th. *REGISTRATION* Students whose application has been accepted and researchers (whether doctoral or not) wishing to attend the summer school without presenting their work will have to pay a participation fee of 120€ to partially cover the organizing costs of the events. The participation fee includes lunches, coffee breaks, and the mid-summer school dinner. Participants will have to cover their own travel and accommodation costs. For the participants affiliated with institutions based in the European Union, this summer school should fall withing the conditions to obtain an ERASMUS+ travel funding. Participants are invited to get in touch with the ERAMUS+ coordinator of their home institution. Doctoral students for whom these costs would be an obstacle to participation can contact the organization directly to try to find a solution.

Best, Laura Call for Contributions (Deadline for abstracts: 15 July 2024) Sociotechnical Consequences of AI: An Interdisciplinary Exploration of Ethical, Organizational, Social, and Computational Dimensions International Workshop at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA (in person) 13 September 2024, 9 am to 6 pm Artificial Intelligence is increasingly permeating different areas of society and being integrated into daily work and leisure practices, organizational structures, and ways of thinking about the world. Some of the areas impacted by AI and relevant to contemporary discourses are information retrieval and knowledge production (business, science, journalism, librarianship and education), predictive and evaluative work (policing, climate science, health and prevention of disease, finance, insurance), as well as communication tasks (customer service, human resources/recruiting). Some of the pertinent topics related to AI include access and accessibility, social justice, interpersonal relationships, skills and competences, cognitive and behavioral changes, human-computer interaction and the division of labor between humans and machines. Discourse within these fields takes place along ethical, organizational, social and computational dimensions. These dimensions are deeply interrelated. Addressing these connections and intersections is essential for a comprehensive understanding of AI systems. For this workshop, we invite contributions that focus not merely on one of the four dimensions but address at least two dimensions together in an interdisciplinary way. The workshop aims to not only discuss how tools, processes, and relations of AI operate, but for whom and why they (do not) work. Additionally, we want to render visible the people, resources, processes, materials and politics that are often a hidden part of the current AI discourse. We primarily welcome paper presentations but are also open to other suggestions for presentation formats. What does it mean to be late middle-aged nowadays? How does living half of your life in a foreign country impact perspectives on later life? Is retirement an opportunity to go back to the home country? What will happen to the next generation, raised in a different country from their parents? Based on 16 months of ethnographic fieldwork, Ageing with Smartphones in Urban Chile analyses the experience of ageing for Peruvian migrants aged around 60, who have lived in Chile for over 20 years. Their life is informed by a series of experiences of being in-between. They live between two countries, two generations (their Peruvian parents and their Chilean children), two different stages in life (retained youth and menacing old age), between giving care (to their parents) and not wanting care (from their children) and between a continuing legacy (through their children, who have a promising future) and not transmitting legacy (some traditions will not pass on to the next generation). The Peruvian population has been one of the most studied in Chile with a wide variety of themes, from the insertion of migrants into the labour market to the spreading of Peruvian restaurants and also discrimination suffered by migrant children at schools, among many others. However, neither the experience of ageing of migrants in Chile nor the experience of late middle age has not been fully addressed. By focusing on the entanglement of ageing, migration and technology, this monograph is an ethnographic contribution to an unexplored subject in the vast literature on migration studies in Chile.
