Abstract: When it comes to tech, the mainstream headlines are bleak: Algorithms control and oppress. AI will destroy democracy and our social fabric, and possibly even drive us to extinction. While legitimate concerns drive these fears, Payal Arora points out that we need to equally account for the fact that tech affords young people something incredibly valuable—a rare space for self-actualisation. Outside the West, where most of the world's youth reside, there is a significant different outlook on tech: in fact, there is a contagion of optimism toward all things digital. These users, especially those in marginalised contexts, are full of hope for new tech. As AI disrupts sectors across industries, education, and beyond, who better to shine the light forward, Arora argues, than the Global South, the navigator of all manner of forced disruptions, leapfrogging obstructive systems, norms, and practices to rapidly reinvent itself? Here is our minitrack description: Systems of all sizes, shapes, and types have always contained abuses of power. How we understand and mitigate such abuse is one way to create better systems that support people to be their best, optimizing performance and teamwork. This minitrack aims to explore how the global system sciences community, in collaboration with other diverse stakeholders worldwide (and synergistic disciplines), can leverage the power of history, social science, and information technology to glean valuable insights that can be made actionable and harnessed to combat abuses of power in systems; addressing such abuses early can potentially prevent real-world negative implications on people navigating those systems, which have proven to be especially detrimental to members of marginalized communities. This minitrack seeks to advance conceptual, historical, and empirical approaches to combating abuses of power in systems broadly defined. For guidance, we define abuses of power in systems as occurring when influence and control are misused by one or more individuals within systems to the detriment of others. We are open to a variety of research methods and theoretical approaches encompassed within systems sciences, focused on abuse in systems and/or understanding systemic abuses of power. Papers should bring a transdisciplinary perspective and should be written for a broad and diverse target audience. Potential topics for exploration could include, but should not be limited to: * How to advance prevention of, and/or active surveillance for “big abuses” of power rooted in systemic enablers, incentives, and cultures in academia and in other societal institutions. * How to engender transparency in reporting, measurement, and amelioration of systemic abuses of power. * How to reimagine and drive cultural transformation to eradicate abuses of power at organizational and system levels in academia and beyond, including how to recognize and surmount barriers they pose to innovation. * How to envision a path to learning systems underpinning continuous improvement in ameliorating systemic abuses of power in academia and beyond. * How to raise social consciousness vis-à-vis such issues so as to mobilize society toward ultimately eradicating them. * How to empower Davids to outmaneuver abusive systems of Goliaths supported by “Armies of Enablers”. * How to understand the social, economic, and (physical and mental) health consequences of abuse. * How to collaboratively formulate a research agenda to guide and propel this global scientific community forward. (XR stands for Extended Reality, encompassing Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality – and different forms of AI used to design those realities). The symposium combines presentations, discussions, immersive project showcases and networking activities across two days. It brings together scholars and creatives to discuss the problem of attention and perception in XR, and explore what XR means for us at this present historical and technical moment. Core activities are carried out through digital platforms, key aspects of knowledge work are datafied and algorithmically governed, and university communities are subjected to new digital forms of monitoring and control. Thanks, Barbara -------- The project “Putting the DSA into Practice,” brings together a team of researchers from Sciences Po’s Law School and Médialab with the aim to monitor and critically evaluate how the systemic risk framework is being implemented, to access and analyze data, and to position itself as a key resource for regulators implementing and enforcing the DSA. It seeks to provide actionable guidance and resources for regulators, civil society and researchers on how to utilize this framework to strengthen the governance of online media platforms. We are looking for someone who is both a rigorous thinker and researcher, but also who will enjoy engaging with audiences that go beyond academia and who likes to “build things.” We are part of an exciting ecosystem of researchers in Europe and the US, are connected to European projects and have ongoing conversations with regulators. Indeed, a significant part of your work will consist in building and strengthening those bridges amongst legal academia, computational social scientists at the Medialab and the European Polarisation Observatory and regulators. This interdisciplinary collaboration is a unique position to develop risk assessment and mitigation frameworks in a policy language suited for the European context but also to develop impactful scholarship in law and/or associated disciplines. Thanks, //DEEN ---------------- Postdoctoral researcher in communication, group identity, and computational methods The successful candidate for this position will work in the Annenberg School for Communication under the supervision of Dr. Deen Freelon. A recent hire at Annenberg, Freelon is in the process of starting a new lab, and this postdoc will play a crucial role in helping him do so. The unifying idea of the new lab’s work is that many facets of group identity—including race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, and others—have historically been neglected as potential factors in co-determining communication patterns and outcomes. Quantification of such characteristics must be done carefully to maximize construct validity and minimize harm and exclusion. (The term “group identity” is used broadly and without reference to any particular theoretical tradition.) Applicants with strong interests in these and related issues are encouraged to apply, as are those with experience analyzing under-studied media types including podcasts, images, and video. Roughly half this individual’s time will be spent working on Freelon’s projects, while the other half will be devoted to projects initiated independently and with other research groups. The position is designed to allow a highly motivated researcher to build a strong CV under the mentorship of a longtime innovator in political communication and computational social science. Extension of the position to a second year (if desired) will depend on effective performance in the first. Desired qualifications: · PhD in communication or related field demonstrating expertise in the following areas: o Communication across or relating to lines of group identity (e.g. race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ideology, religion, nationality, etc.) o Computational methods o AI as a social science method o Development of open-source software tools for research o Experience analyzing non-textual media types quantitatively, including video, images, and audio o Political communication · Experience leading self-directed research and collaborating with a team under the supervision of a PI · Experience with Python, R, and/or other relevant programming languages · A strong publication record Experience presenting data in compelling and accessible ways Interest in establishing professional connections with theoretically and methodologically diverse collaborators First-year postdoctoral researchers will receive a minimum stipend of $66,300 commensurate with prior postdoctoral experience and serve in a 12-month appointment to start October 15, 2024. Postdoctoral fellows will receive a taxable relocation allowance of up to $1,000 for domestic relocations and up to $2,000 for international relocations as well as $3,000 in travel/research expenses. Curatorial & Policy Research Officer and Technical Research Officer, Algorithmic Archive Project The Bodleian Libraries has ambitions to significantly increase its commitment to archiving web-based content, including social media data, algorithms, and other important resources which impact how these materials are generated and experienced. As part of this strategic development we will soon begin the Research & Scoping Phase of a the Algorithmic Archive project, which will research and propose a roadmap for the Libraries' services in this area. We now need to recruit two complementary Research Officer roles to undertake the investigation work required by the project: · Curatorial & Policy Research Officer · Technical Research Officer The two roles will work together closely, and as part of the wider Bodleian team. Both roles are full-time (37.5 hours per week) and offered as 12- month fixed-term contracts. Working from home will be possible, though some elements of the project's work may require you to be on Libraries' premises or elsewhere. What we are looking for For both roles We are looking for candidates who are knowledgeable about social media platforms and who will be able to communicate a passion for documenting contemporary life as reflected in social media and algorithmic data. In addition, you will be capable of designing, delivering and documenting the project's investigations; and of using the project's research findings to support the practical aims of the project to develop a roadmap for Bodleian services which reflects user and business requirements. It has its pros and cons which are worth studying by African scholars worldwide. Hence this MADSEJ's theme, The Interception of Artificial Intelligence in the African Humanities, investigates the African digital culture expressed in diverse African languages in Africa and across the globe to defend African humanness in all its forms and customs, especially among youth. This issue will explore the intersection of artificial intelligence and African humanities, with a focus on: * The role of computer-assisted mediation in African digital culture * The impact of AI on literary production and its acceptance in the digital realm * Algorithmic sociocultural practices * The use of language by African Gen Z on social media platforms such as TikTok, Twitter, and Facebook Other sub-thematic concerns related to the central theme can be submitted for review.
