*** With apologies for cross-posting *** Dear colleagues, We would like to draw your attention to a special issue of Television & New Media on streaming production cultures. Over the past two decades, major tech companies like Netflix and Amazon have become central players in the screen industries. The special issue explores the practices and beliefs of above- and below-the-line workers who create audiovisual content for streamers and/or online platforms. Crucially, the special issue aims to broaden a conversation which has primarily been dominated by US-based services (Netflix in particular) and English-language markets. This special issue encourages proposals that also consider other major streaming services, online video platforms, and local/regional streamers. By focusing on a range of geographic contexts, this special issue aims to shed much needed light on the broad spectrum of production experiences in the online screen industries. We invite production studies that offer both empirical and methodological findings. Our goal is to provide a kaleidoscope of research on different production cultures in order to significantly advance this critical field of research. No payment from the authors will be required. With apologies for crossposting Dear Colleagues, we would like to draw your attention to the Call for Applications for 9 Ph.D. positions in the Sociology and Methodology of Social Research (SOMET) programme. The SOMET Ph.D. is a joint programme of the Department of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Milan and the Department of Cultures, Politics and Society at the University of Turin. The University of Milan is the administrative base of the programme, which is embedded in the Department of Social & Political Sciences, awarded as "Department of Excellence 2023-2027" by the Italian Ministry of University & Research. Admission to the Ph.D. programme is based on qualifications and interviews. Admitted Ph.D. students will be granted a scholarship. The Ph.D. programme, fully taught in English at University of Milan and Turin, offers quality teaching at the international level and promotes international exchanges with top European research institutions. Among the possible research strands where to propose a project, perhaps of greater interest for participants in this list is the "Digital society and the media" one, with potential supervisors profs. Funded PhD opportunities in AI-enabled media accessibility

The opportunity to apply for PhD studentships under the new AI-enabled Digital Accessibility PhD programme<https://www.surrey.ac.uk/postgraduate/ai-enabled-digital-accessibility-ada-…> (ADA) has just been launched - this is a new doctoral scholarships network funded at the University of Surrey by the Leverhulme Trust. Most of the studentships are aimed at UK-based students but a smaller number are available to international students. Additional funding is available for Masters Plus Doctoral Scholarships for students from underrepresented groups. There are a number of project opportunities in this first phase that draw on social research skills to explore user needs and expectations in this area. For example, I'm involved in supervising one potential studentship under theme 5: Enhancing assistive technology through AI, focused on "Exploring preferences regarding AI-based solutions to accessibility of textual information for people living with dementia". Mastodon research ethics questions

Hello everyone, I’m part of a research team at the Experimental Methods and Media Lab at Trent Uni, Canada that is working on a Mastodon-based study. The project involves setting up and moderating a solar-powered Mastodon instance. The study will observe and interview users to understand their experience of using an intermittently connected social media. We are currently in the process of the submitting our research ethics application and would really appreciate insights from anyone who has experience in conducting research on Mastodon. We are particularly interested in understanding how research projects on Mastodon have secured participant consent, established privacy expectations, developed a code of conduct, moderation policy, and a research data collection policy. It will also be very helpful for us to know how these and any other ethical considerations related to conducting research on Mastodon have been successfully communicated to research ethics boards. The internship is for 6 months with a preferred starting date of 1 July 2024. Role The successful candidate will support the work of the GFCE Secretariat Research and Working Groups pillar. We offer the opportunity to experience firsthand how an international forum dealing with the dynamic subject of cyber capacity building operates globally. The intern will be given the opportunity to communicate with international stakeholders such as governments, companies and international organizations and to perform dynamic tasks such as performing research, writing reports and facilitating international meetings on cyber capacity building. The position requires a high degree of responsibility, discretion and confidentiality. Duties and Responsibilities - Support the GFCE Secretariat in carrying out its day-to day activities in facilitating the GFCE Working Groups, performing (desk) research and contributing to report writing; - Assist with the day-to-day operation and management of the Cybil Portal, including content reviewing/uploading and website maintenance/improvement tasks; - Contribute to internal knowledge management by updating the document library and keeping a record of discussions; - Facilitate the organization of (inter)national, in-person and online GFCE meetings and events; - Support the GFCE Secretariat with the development and implementation of the Global CCB Research Agenda; - Perform Ad hoc tasks and other relevant duties as identified by the Research & Working Groups teams.
