Feel free to reach out to me directly if you have any questions. > Interrogating Trust & Safety > Over the last several decades, digital platforms have increasingly pervaded almost every sphere of our lives (e.g. commerce, dating, health, education, employment, entertainment, networking, communication). Consequently, platform-side Trust & Safety—a professional field dedicated to user safety and platform integrity—has become indispensable. Though largely behind-the-scenes, T&S teams are charged with enhancing the brand perceptions and protecting the user bases of large platforms and startups alike. It’s a unique practice that is both a guarded specialty as well as a matter of public interest. > > But what do we really know about the history of trust and safety (broadly construed) or the development of platform-side Trust & Safety? While related topics have begun to garner more public attention, scholarly work that thoughtfully historicizes the development of the field and/or profession, the role of companies and/or platforms, the nature of the relationships between a variety of stakeholders in the space, the evolving nature of practices, processes, tools, and/or products, and historical precedents for and impacts of regulatory acts is lacking. Given the rapidly evolving nature of the ecosystem and the centrality of work across the whole of the internet—from domain registration to content moderation—we propose a special issue of Internet Histories dedicated to topics directly related to historicizing all aspects of trust and safety: the ecosystem, field, domain, practice, protocols and tools, and profession. We encourage authors to interrogate trust and safety from a range of perspectives, prioritizing academic rigor and historical dimensions. > > Possible topics may include: > > The professionalization of T&S. > Early platform-side T&S teams and operations. > How trust and safety work has evolved across specific regions and geographies. > Histories of T&S beyond content moderation (i.e., other types of products/services such as ride-share, dating, and services apps; online marketplaces; and internet-connected devices). > Various harm/risk areas (e.g., child safety, terrorism/extremism, elections, or mis/disinformation) across decades. > How early T&S addressed technological impacts/affordances for communities in the 2000s, 2010s (before the term became widely adopted). > Origins and evolutions as maintenance or care work. > Gender and the history of T&S work (particularly in areas like child safety or technology-facilitated gender-based violence). > The role of nonprofit organizations and civil society in the shaping of platform-side T&S. > The history of regulatory decisions and their impact on current and future practices. > How, when, and why law enforcement and national security became involved in trust and safety. > The impacts of platform-side T&S on community moderators and managers. > This special issue will explore these questions—and many others—through a range of theoretical frames (for example, postcolonial, genealogical, historical materialist, feminist, STS, organizational development, cybernetic, international relations, disruption and hype cycles, world systems, globalization) and approaches (for example, archival, oral history, historiographic, commodity chain, ethnographic, social network, policy sciences) as proposed by authors. We are looking for projects at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary enquiry into AI and inequalities. Deadline: 14 Nov 2025 Online interviews: end Nov/early Dec 2025 Start: February 2026 Your doctoral research project will be designed by you to respond to the issues of difference and power in a time of “responsible AI.” Your application should reflect your existing knowledge and interest in the area, and identify clearly what you perceive to be a research need or gap. Clear proposals using interdisciplinary, innovative and critical methods, methodologies and lenses are particularly encouraged. Your proposal must demonstrate how the PhD project is grounded in contemporary debates around AI ethics and responsible AI, and crucially how social justice is at its heart. The historical evolution of social media makes them a part of our digital cultural heritage. However, the processes used by institutions to archive and document social media data are still only rudimentary, not least because of their economic, social and aesthetic characteristics and the unique attributes of media technology. Researchers, research institutions and cultural heritage institutions therefore face a wide range of problems in terms of their archiving, indexing and use. Researchers who wish to work with social media data also encounter numerous new challenges, especially when fundamental changes such as the elimination of application programming interfaces (APIs) impact access to specific data from online platforms. The archiving, indexing and use of dynamic data from social media are therefore fraught with problems which researchers, research institutions, libraries and archives have to tackle in a consistent manner. Ideally, solutions to these problems should be developed cooperatively, since this requires extensive effort which would be beyond the scope of a single data community or discipline. The aim of the conference is therefore to enable libraries, archives, infrastructural facilities, research institutions and researchers to network and exchange experiences with archiving and the sustainable use of data and digital objects from social media. We explicitly welcome case studies and presentations on solutions and their practical implementation as well as reports on research findings. Reimagining Digital ID: learning from the South A one-day event on Digital ID in Global South, refugee and UK contexts, including art exhibition launch with drawings by Karen refugees Room 137A, Richard Hoggart Building, Goldsmiths University of London November 8th, 10:15-17:00 The event marks the end of the British Academy project 'Reimagining Digital Identity among Karen refugees in Thailand' (REDID https://www.redid.net/) REDID team members (Mirca Madianou, Charlotte Hill and Hayso Thako) will share key findings in conversation with researchers studying Digital ID in Global South contexts where such systems have long been piloted. The UK government's recent announcement about the introduction of Digital ID is a call to learn from research in Global Majority contexts and consider the implications of such systems for migrants and refugees. The analysis includes similarity measures, linguistic metrics, and semiotic analysis to understand what AI and humans capture or omit in their interpretations. Dear colleagues, The University of Virginia School of Data Science, in partnership with the Digital Technology for Democracy Lab, is pleased to announce the fifth session of the Gender & Tech Online Talk Series, which will take place on October 29, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. (EDT). The “Data Work and Political Participation” talk will focus on how data labor is gendered in its structures, practices, and outcomes. Speakers will be encouraged to discuss how gendered divisions of labor are reproduced in digital economies, as well as the ways women, queer, and gender-diverse workers are disproportionately concentrated in invisible, precarious, or undervalued forms of labor that sustain platforms and AI systems. We also hope to present perspectives on how global inequalities intersect with gender to shape the conditions of platform labor and what kind of frameworks could ensure recognition, protection, and equity for workers at the core of digital infrastructures.
