Dear AoIR colleagues, Apologies for the self-promotion, but I though some of you might be interested to know that my book "You Must Become and Algorithmic Problem" is available for pre-order with Bristol University Press. https://bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/you-must-become-an-algorithmic-problem The book addresses the unspoken social contract we have with tech companies. In exchange for reducing the anxiety of an increasingly complex online world, we submit to algorithmic classification and predictability. This reduces incentives for us to become “algorithmic problems.” Instead, we develop algorithmic habits ourselves with dire consequences for liberal democracy. I calls for a reconsideration of the socio-technical contract that insists upon algorithms that promote play, creativity and potentiality rather than classification and reification. Dear colleagues, The latest issue of the *Internet Policy Review, *edited by Romain Badouard and Anne Bellon, explores the participation of civil society in online content regulation. How can moderation on social networks truly be fair, effective, and inclusive? What role can civil society play in democratizing platform governance? Twelve papers examine these questions through various field studies: ordinary citizen participation in forum moderation, content flagging by organizations (trusted flaggers), fact-checking, advertiser lobbying on platform policies, influencer mobilizations, data activism, ethical design, and alternative platforms. Dear colleagues, I'm very happy to share details about my new book that is now available (please see below)! Apocalyptic Authoritarianism: Climate Crisis, Media, and Power (Oxford University Press, 2025) by Hanna E. Morris (Assistant Professor, University of Toronto) In Apocalyptic Authoritarianism: Climate Crisis, Media, and Power, media scholar Hanna E. Morris reveals how national anxieties following the 2016 presidential election of Donald Trump have shaped American news coverage of climate change in ways that severely limit how it has come to be known, imagined, and contended with. Looking at climate change reporting across prominent and ideologically diverse U.S. newspapers and magazines over the past decade, the book traces how news media create an illusion of control in the present through nostalgic and heroic stories of the past. Morris identifies a new mode of reactionary politics called “apocalyptic authoritarianism” to describe the post-2016 alignment of historically privileged figures united by a common enemy of the “new” New Left and a shared appeal to fears of “total crisis.” Their antidemocratic paradigm portends national and planetary disarray if progressive social and climate justice “warriors” are not controlled at home and if “unruly masses” of climate migrants are not contained abroad. Ultimately, Morris calls for more transformative forms of climate journalism capable of facilitating—as opposed to impeding—robustly democratic responses to climate change. Here's more about the book: The ‘Trolley Problem,’ a well-known thought experiment, has come to symbolise the ‘ethics of autonomous driving’—a powerful narrative that gained traction alongside the excitement surrounding driverless cars. While the problem is still used in classrooms to highlight the contrasts between utilitarian and deontological ethical frameworks in analytic philosophy, it has also influenced our expectations of AI-driven technologies. It suggests that ethical decision-making can be automated and data-driven, rather than remaining a human, social, or individualised practice. *Auto-correct *explores the language and materiality around ‘autonomy’, as well as the cultural impact of epistemic tools like the Trolley Problem and Moral Machine. These shape how safety and automobility are framed as challenges for the driverless car to solve. Blending critical studies of technology, culture, and society, the book examines how driverless cars are reshaping forms of governance, responsibility and values. *Auto-xorrect* examines the cultural ontologies of the driverless car: as an AI/robot imaginary, a big data infrastructure, and a conventional twentieth-century automobile. The book ultimately argues for broader understanding of ethics and values—not just as outputs of AI systems but as essential components of our present and future social and technological landscapes. Best regards, Jens Hälterlein & Matthias Leese --- International Relations (IR) scholars have, in order to grapple with the pre-eminent role of science and technology in international security affairs such as warfare, counterterrorism, or non-proliferation, increasingly turned to STS. Vice versa, while there are notable exceptions of STS scholars engaging the military or questions of secrecy (see Vogel et al. 2017), the discipline has, given the breadth of its work, been relatively reluctant to study matters of international security. Contemporary developments such as the use of AI-enabled weaponry, the tightening of bonds between the civil and the military sector, and the (re)militarization of politics and society would, however, so we contend, warrant much broader and systematic attention of and engagement by STS. Such engagement can be beneficial to deal with new conflicts, growing tensions, and uncertain futures in multiple ways. First, it can expand our understandings of complex, interconnected systems at scale (such as national AI innovation strategies, nuclear arsenals, cyber security infrastructures, and disaster preparedness efforts) and their entanglements with (science) diplomacy, policy-making, and geopolitical strategy. Second, it presents a challenging environment of ethical questions that arise from aspects such as dual-use, surveillance, and state secrecy that tend to interfere with norms of scientific autonomy and public accountability. And third, by engaging in international security matters, STS scholars can inform policy and offer critical perspectives that challenge overly technocratic or militarized approaches to security.
