*Call for Papers: Oxford Intersections: Social Media and Language * Dear AOIR colleagues: In 2025, Oxford University Press launched a new type of resource: Oxford Intersections. Oxford Intersections reflects the critical role that peer-reviewed interdisciplinary research plays in helping policy- and decision-makers tackle the world’s most complex and urgent environmental, cultural, political, and social challenges. Topics of Interest: We invite abstracts (by Oct. 20) for the Social Media and Language section of the Social Media in Society and Culture Intersection. This section brings together and promotes cutting-edge research from varied methodological and theoretical perspectives to explore how online users employ language and other semiotic resources creatively and strategically — including everyday communication, entertainment, activism, influence, and conflict — while addressing the evolving roles of digital environments, AI, and algorithms in shaping discourse and negotiating identities and ideologies in digital spaces. Authorship: Oxford Intersections welcomes contributors from diverse backgrounds, spanning disciplines, institutions, geographies, and career stages. Authors may include researchers, academics, professionals, practitioners, and PhD students. Authors must hold a research degree (master’s or higher). Submission Guidelines: Manuscripts should be original and not previously published or under consideration elsewhere. If accepted, articles should run between 6,000-10,000 words and will be rigorously peer-reviewed before publication. To be considered, submit abstracts of no more than 500 words with your CV to Cynthia Gordon at gordonc(a)georgetown.edu. The Social Media and Language section, like the other sections of the Social Media in Society and Culture Intersection, is not a handbook or an encyclopedia; it consists of original research articles, of a similar length to journal articles but within a unique planned structure designed to utilize the digital medium to bring together all the intersecting and cross-connected aspects of a deeply interdisciplinary subject, under the larger umbrella. Accepted manuscripts will undergo a rigorous peer-review process to ensure academic standards and relevance to the overall ethos of the Intersections project. The Division of Journalism in the School of Communication at American University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position beginning August 1, 2027. Applicants should have a PhD or an anticipated PhD completion by August 1, 2027, in the field(s) of Data Science, Quantitative Methods, or other relevant fields. Candidates should be effective teachers and must be strongly committed to excellence in research, creative, or relevant professional work. We welcome applications from candidates engaged in high-quality scholarship in areas including data science and quantitative methods. Teaching specialization in these fields is preferred, though other areas will be considered. Dear All, We are editing the volume Internet Studies: A Multidisciplinary Approach (Edward Elgar). We are currently seeking three strong chapters, addressing: Platform Capitalism Unbound, Global Platform Labor, and Sustainable Digital Futures Details: Platform Capitalism Unbound A chapter is needed that analyzes the rise of platform capitalism as a dominant economic and institutional logic, with emphasis on: * Consolidation of infrastructural power by leading technology firms * Value extraction through data monopolization * Vertical integration and AI investment * Regulatory responses and new forms of market concentration in the AI era A combination of political economy, economic sociology, and STS is desirable. Algorithmic Governance of Daily Life An analysis of datafication and algorithmic governance in everyday domains is required: welfare, education, policing, urban management, consumption, and intimate life. Emphasis on bias, accountability, transparency, and the reconfiguration of agency under conditions of pervasive algorithmic steering. Global Platform Labor This is the most critical gap. A chapter is needed on: * Gig work, content moderation, data labeling, and remote microwork * Inequality and precarity between Global North and South * New labor hierarchies * Resistance and cross-border solidarities A strong focus on the Global South, combined with labor studies and digital sociology, is desirable. Envisioning Sustainable Digital Futures A Forward-looking chapter is needed on: * Environmental costs of digital infrastructures and AI (energy, water, minerals, data centers) * AI literacy * Human-centered and socially just design frameworks * A combination of speculative inquiry and policy relevance Submission Guidelines Please submit: - A chapter abstract of 300–500 words (excluding references) - A provisional chapter title - Author name(s), affiliation(s), and a short bio (approx. 100 words per author) - Indication of which part of the book the proposed chapter best fits Deadline for abstracts: 30 October 2026 Final chapters should be approximately 8,000–10,000 words (including footnotes, references, and any tables/figures) and will undergo peer review. Dear colleagues, We are getting to the final days of the Call for Contributions for the *II International Conference “Critical Cartographies of the Digital City”*, which will take place on *5 and 6 November 2026* at the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology of the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) in Madrid. The conference examines how platform capitalism reorganises contemporary urban life, affecting infrastructures, borders, labour, care, and everyday arrangements. We are bringing together diverse disciplinary traditions to explore multi-scalar transformations, ranging from global capital circuits to neighbourhoods, homes, and bodies. CFP: Platforms and the Mediation of Conflicts in Politically Hostile Environments

Dear AoIR friends, Sharing with you our exciting call for papers for a special issue in Platforms & Society - Platforms and the Mediation of Conflicts in Politically Hostile Environments. The guest editors - Emillie de Keulenaar, Diyi Liu, João C. Magalhães, Ivar Alberto Hartmann, and myself (Tom Divon) - come to this with a broader concern about the ecology of power through which conflict is mediated on platforms: how it becomes visible, circulates, gains credibility, triggers action, or disappears. We know the power of mediation may be a tale as old as time, but platforms make that power especially tangible and infrastructural. Their normative assumptions, carried through moderators, policies, algorithms, and interfaces, help structure these spaces of mediation and determine what reaches our eyeballs, and what never does. We therefore welcome scholarship that advances our understanding of how platforms mediate conflict in environments shaped by democratic instability, authoritarian pressure, occupation, political violence, or war. The full CFP sets out the range of possible angles, including platform moderation and governance, state pressure and regulation, visibility and participation, propaganda and disinformation, witnessing and evidence, activist and journalistic practices, prosocial or conflict-sensitive design, and emerging technologies such as GenAI. We welcome different platforms, cases, regions, methods, and theoretical approaches. We would be delighted to hear from anyone whose work sits somewhere in this universe, and would be very grateful if you could circulate the call to colleagues and networks who might be interested. Dear colleagues, We are pleased to announce that registrations are now open for the GIG-ARTS School on Digital Governance, taking place in Salerno, Italy, from 22–26 February 2027. The GIG-ARTS School is an intensive, interdisciplinary programme bringing together academic, policy, technical and professional perspectives on how the Internet and digital technologies are developed, governed, regulated and transformed. Over five days, participants will engage with internationally recognised scholars and experts through lectures, seminars, multistakeholder roundtables and case discussions. *Main themes* The 2027 programme will address: • Internet governance and infrastructure • Platforms and artificial intelligence • Data governance and cybersecurity • Digital sovereignty • International cooperation and geopolitics • Digital law and policy The School will bring together an international faculty of 20+ scholars and practitioners, with confirmed faculty including Robin Mansell, Marianne Franklin, Julia Pohle, Francesca Musiani, Niels ten Oever, Oreste Pollicino, Daniela Piana, Edoardo Celeste, Dennis Redeker, Adio-Adet Dinika, Riccardo Nanni, Andrea Beccalli, Xiaojuan Grace Yang, Claudia Padovani, and others. Following AoIR2026's call to (re)generate scholarship on technological configurations, the workshop aims to systematically identify critical concepts from dependency theory that could amplify ongoing debates and revitalize center-periphery research. Proposed by the "Dependency Theory and Techno-Imperialism” study group of the Non-Aligned Tech Movement (NATM), the workshop will survey key concepts across the vast and heterogenous dependency theory literature, and trace how they have been historically deployed by the "dependentistas". Call for abstracts - A Research Agenda for Cancel Culture (Edward Elgar) Abstracts due 15 October Cancel culture is both widely celebrated and criticized as a way of using media to hold people accountable. It is understood as a contemporary media practice, but also a form of social sanction, and as a buzzword to chart political fault-lines. The term traces its origins in African American culture, including spaces like Black Twitter that enable a historically marginalised community to address injustices. Elsewhere we witness call-out culture and similar adjacent practices in activist circles, among fan communities, and in virtually any (semi-)public mediated sphere. These practices - and the ways scholars and others talk about them - point to dynamics in media, culture and society warrant greater attention. "A Research Agenda for Cancel Culture, Visibility and Contestation in Media" (preliminary title) aims to deliver a range of in-depth accounts of how diverse social actors leverage media to watch over, denounce and punish purported wrongdoers. These targets range from sexual abusers to cultural and political opponents. We are soliciting contributions for an interdisciplinary collection on cancel culture, visibility and contestation in the media, to be published with Edward Elgar Publishing. This book will cover cancel culture and related media practices from diverse social scientific and humanities perspectives, including media and cultural studies, sociology, political studies, history and philosophy. Inter-disciplinary contributions are also welcome. We invite contributions that address a wide range of socio-cultural settings, including: - Fandoms and policing of public and private statements - Activism and public denunciations of prominent individuals - Activism overlapping into fandom and consumerism - Politics, polarisation, and so-called ‘culture wars’ - National identities and nationalism as a driver of denunciation in media - Content creators focusing on personal and social grievances - AI-generated renditions of offence and outrage - Businesses, brands and organisational responses to cancellation - Media outrage and impacts on the job market, dating market, etc. - Impacts of cancellation on appeals to a public for support (ex: GoFundMe, Patreon) - Historic precedents to cancellation (ex: Garfinkel’s status degradation ceremony) - Post-cancellation conditions, including support from affective (fan) communities and the possibility of uncancellation. Within these settings, we especially welcome studies that consider the following lines of inquiry: - Reflecting on particular facets of media (affordances, practices, ‘bugs as a feature’) - Positioning the ‘extremely online’ in relation to a broader public - Mediated visibility and cancel culture as cultural (or surveillant) imaginaries - Context- and sector-specific development of best practices in responding to cancellation campaigns - Alternative models to accountability, justice, and morality If you are interested in contributing, we ask you to consider the following steps: - 15 October, 2026: Submit a 350-500 word abstract that includes (a) your chosen topic and/or case study, (b) the theoretical and/or conceptual framework you employ, (c) a brief description of the data you draw upon, and (d) any preliminary findings and implications you are able to share. - 2 November, 2026: we will notify authors if they are invited to submit a full chapter, and provide some preliminary feedback. - 30 April, 2027: full chapters are due (6000 - 8000 words, including references).
